Star Trek legend William Shatner has launched an astonishing attack on former co-star George Takei, calling him "sick" and "psychotic".
In an internet video clip the former Captain Kirk said nobody cared when Takei, who played Mr Sulu in the sci-fi series, finally came out as gay in 2005.
Shatner launched the attack after Takei announced that Shatner would not be invited to his gay wedding last month.
Takei has admitted harbouring ill-feelings towards his former co-star, who, he claims has a huge ego and hogged the limelight while on Star Trek.
Shatner says in the video: "The whole thing makes me feel badly, poor man. There is such a sickness there.
(snip)
But he has continued to speak badly about me for all these years. Obviously, hiding his homosexuality - talk about festering and not living the truth of your life and feeling badly about yourself - and being fearful somebody would find out about this terrible, terrible secret, so he thought.
"Finally at the age of, I think, 70, he decides to come out of the closet and say, "I'm gay".
"Like, who cares? Be gay. Don't be gay. That's up to you George."
(snip)
"I presume he can remember all these terrible thing I must have done when I said 'Hello' or something to him.
"You would think he had this epiphany and say - because he and I don't have many years left in this world - 'I wish him well. I'm so happy that I wish him well'.
"But instead what he does is he makes this big deal about not inviting me to his wedding.
(snip)
"It's sad. I feel nothing but pity for him."

He’s thinking about the Star Fleet Motto: “Never leave your buddy’s behind.”
Has any actor done better for himself over the last 20,25 years of his life than shatner? It’s easy to make fun of him, but man does he know how to rake in the bucks.
Sulu was just upset that Capt. Kirk never gave him a “full spread”.
Of the original cast, Shatner and Nimoy went on to have acting careers after Trek folded, while the rest of the cast faded into obscurity except for the occasional ST movie. That must grate on them. Yes, Shatner was a camera hog, but if it wasn't for Shatner and Nimoy, the rest would have been driving buses that much sooner.
I think I know some who are trying to “pass” & don’t know any of the flaunting kind. Not scientific by any means, but argues against your disproportionate claim.
Now that’s funny...
I may be trading in a stereotype.
In any case, it would seem that Takei certainly fits the bill.
It was a TV series, with perhaps 40ish minutes to tell a story. It made good sense to keep the series focused on a few individuals. Kelly, I think, understood that - or maybe he just figured it was a good paycheck.
The others - the complainers - are the ones who have nothing on their resume except Star Trek. And they complain they didn’t have bigger parts? Maybe that was because they weren’t up to CARRYING those roles.
Shatner has a big ego. He also has a pretty good work history. They used to say that if you could back it up, you weren’t boasting.
My brother-in-law was always gay but nobody ever mentioned it (except his two brothers) and his mother and father never acknowledged it either. He had one lifetime partner and didn’t go around flaming away or making us feel defensive. He was kind and generous. I never let my kids run around in their underwear around him, though. Otherwise, he was always good to us and when he died, he left my children part of his estate. Gays are not usually horrible people.

He’s just mad that Kirk never said “Set a course for Uranus, Sulu”.
Shatner actually has a solid resume. He did a terrific twilight zone episode before Star Trek, I think it was the one with gremlins on the plane. After Star Trek, he did T.J Hooker for a few years. And how can you not like a show that had Heather Locklear on it, and the Beach Boys and Jerry Lee Lewis. Rescue 911, Priceline and now Denny Crane, have made the guy a ton of money. And if you’re and entertainer that’s the bottom line, making money.
christopher lee does continue to make movies, he is over 80 I believe. Not sure how old Ian McKlellan is, but I believe he remains booked as well. As far as I know they both only do movies, though.
What is most interesting about shatner is the variety of projects he is involved in. The man has fingers in like half a dozen areas/projects, remains active in television, etc. Professionally, there is a lot to admire there.
I think you are. Reminds me of the vacation we took with our 3 sons. We made a stop in San Fran & before we got there, they were all afraid that they'd have to fight off guys hitting on them. None of that happened & other than an individual here or there, like you'd see in any other city, it wasn't flaunted.
In any case, it would seem that Takei certainly fits the bill.
Most actors & "artists" are kind of attention whores. We're into chicken or egg territory.
Hmm, wonder why the burps? I did everything right...
He wrote once that his theory of managing your career was to work every chance you got. He also had a role in “Judgment at Nuremberg”. I believe he also raised Arabian horses, and he’s written - probably with help - a bunch of books.
He’s done more than the rest of the cast combined, so the claims that he hogged the series rings hollow with me. When you are telling a story in 40 minutes, you don’t have time for a lot of wandering around.
I’d respect the others a lot more if they said something like, “We had 3 years where Shatner and Nimoy carried the show, and then I went on with my life. Great memories, though!”
