It was just a little civil case with just 5 witnesses total. The attorney for the plaintiff began by asking general questions of the jurors. What is your name, where do you work, do you vote Dem or Rep, and one other question, what do you think of the economy, i.e. who is to blame.
Well as you can guess, most of the sheeple said that it was the greedy executives, yada, yada. When he got to me, he forgot to ask MY opinion. So being the meek, little, wall flower that I am, I spoke up and said, "You didn't as me what I think of the economic mess." Since he didn't know me very well, he says, "I'm sorry, what is your opinion of the matter?"
That's all I needed. I said, "Sure there was greed and corruption, but you can lay every bit of it at the feet of the Democrats in Congress who three years ago stood in front of a hearing involving the CEO of Freddie Mac and knowingly covered up for his cooking the books."
I think I took most people off guard.
Anyway, when it came time to select jurors, I was the very first one dismissed. The other jurors got a laugh at that as I got up and and said, "Gee, I wonder why?"
I think they will remember me.
He never asked me that questions specifically. The guy next to me said he was as far right as you can get. I said I was just right of him.
I doubt that would ever happen though as soon as someone asks me what I do for a living. "The real law says this...."
I will never serve on a jury.
Having been a Police Oficer a Corections Office and working in security for decades my standard answer to can you give a fair hearing to so and so I ansswwr sure. He but in the end he is guilty. The Police had evidence to arrest him or they would not have done so and there for he is guilty, but I am willing to listen to his excuses for it.
Nothing they can do to you for your honest opinion of the situation and they will never take the chance you are bluffing.
I have to call in a couple of weeks to see if I’m going to be on jury duty, I will consider it a privilege.
I hear you. I’m afraid that if people like me duck out, only OJ jurors will be left. Also, the coppers don’t always get it right (only about 99.9% of the time). I’m gonna hold them to standard of “provin’ it”.
Yup. It’s a sign of intelligence, and the plaintiff’s lawyers can’t have that.
Indeed it is. But for me and one other juror a man would be free today instead of hung trial and back to jail for yet another round.
He admitted to everything “...but he really loved her.” was what swayed the other jurors.
I was so glad to have kept him in the county lockup.
If I don’t want on a jury, I just say that Rush is a liberal.
I would say I'd vote with the law, but I wouldn't mention Article VI.
I don’t get your point.
Rush is a flaming liberal.
And why would I want to get out of jury duty? I would consider it an honor to serve.
Instructions to prospective jurors were: Give no more merit to evidence of a police officer than you would give to other witnesses.
I put up my hand and was asked to go up to speak with the judge and attorneys.
I said: “Since I am not a crook, I was brought up to understand that the officer has a gun, badge and uniform BECAUSE he is honorable and responsible... so I can't deprogram that.”
They all looked at each other and didn't say anything. Finally, the judge looked at me and said “I think you better go home”
To THEM, Rush is a bad boy conservative. For me to call him a liberal would immediately eliminate me from a jury.
And, sigh, I have yet to be called to jury duty, even though I have been voting for 36 years. I would love to be on one.
As to my point... I was being funny.
“how could they ask whether you voted dem or rep...I thought we vote by secret ballot?”
That’s what i thought as well. Maybe it varies from state to state, but asking someone who they vote for is not a permissible question in the parts of the woods with which i am familiar.
(It’s usually pretty easy to figure out someone’s political orientation from asking other generic questions)
When all of the smart people avoid jury duty, the litigants no longer have a jury of their peers. That is not a good thing.
(so was I)
He didn't make the cut, probably because both sides considered him a doofus.
Have you been called to duty? My wife has been several times, and yet, even though I really want to, I have never been called. And my company pays my wages if called.
Twice, when I was overseas in the Army - not since.
Both times, I offered to fly back, if they would cover the airfare.
They excused me instead.
LOL.
