The Obama camp seems to be opposing McCain on this.
I think McCain should show up a little late for the debate, loosen the collar and apologize for running late as he has been busy doing the people’s business.
Luckily 45 days is an eternity in politics.
good idea earlier this afternoon... bad idea now. With the Administration is moving towards the Democrats (CEO pay, bailing out deadbeats), McCain is going to become the face of a big, fat, sloppy disaster of a bill.
I have to disagree with a lot of Posters.I think this is a serious mistake. For one it looks like a Political calculation.Which it is.He will do nothing but show how well
he can work with the Dims again.And we already know that to well. But the real problem and risk is that he may not accomplish anything and the debates will
be what truly decides this election.But..i could be wrong and it may work for him.But i have serious doubts with his poll
numbers dropping like a rock.
The last time McCain felt real pressure was the last time he had to land on a carrier deck. Life's been good since that day. The rest of you are in for one heluva ride.
Let me ask you this, what does McCain and Obama get paid for?

Our leaders need to be in DC....real leaders do this..
Its a good move for McCain.
Gives him an opportunity to show some leadership and concern for the job he already has.
Leaves Obama out on the campaign trail alone, with just words, just speeches. Obama looks like an empty suit by failing to deal with the important issue now.
McCain should have adopted this strategy from the get go, a “green” campaign waged from his front porch while he continues on with his business. With modern telecommunications , most of the travel that’s done is pretty pointless anyhow.
Folks, this is a GOLDEN opportunity to give Barry the big smack down. Mc Cain goes to Washington and in due course (say Saturday) announces in a major speech that after an extensive examination of the problem he is opposed to the bailout. Mc Cain gets a few elbows in about how Barak “call me if I’m needed” Obama chose to continue to promote himself while he did what he was elected to do. He then appologizes to the American people for not being at the debate but graciously repeats his offer to hold those 10 town hall meetings with Obama. Mc Cain then goes on to provide a narrative about how Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac came about and how, while he is not the next Adam Smith, he was smart enough to cosponsor legislation to address obvious problems in how the two entities were being operated. Then he would go on to point out that it was Msrs. Dodd and Frank who torpedoed he efforts. And then he would proceed to disclose who the top 3 recipients of Fannie and Freddie camapaign contributions were (the Big “O” is in there at #3). Finally he would conclude by stating that,” My friends, my decision to suspend my campaign and skip this first debate may very well have cost me the election. Well, only you can be the judge of that. But we have said from the beginning that we are putting our country first and that’s what we mean”
This strategy does several things. By suspending his campaign it makes Obama look like the vacuous and arrogant elitist that he is. “Call me if you need me”!!! By rejecting the Bush Administration bailout he can put further distance between himself and Bush plus appeal to fiscal conservatives. And finally if he does it right he can land the blame for all of this economic mess squarley on the Democrats and Obama.
Of course all of this presupposes that Mc Cain can recognize this opportunity and effectively take advantage of it.
If he does, it could be the defining moment of the campaign.
Just my 2 cents worth.
One of McCain’s staff appeared on David Gregory’s show (GAK!!!!)this afternoon and said that if the work got done by Friday, he’d show up at the debate. Of course, that’s not much time, but maybe he figures he can do both.
It’s 3AM, the phone rang.
What did Obama do? He wanted to issue a joint press release with McCain on the areas they agree on.
What did McCain do? He did what was right, and went back to work in the senate. He did the responsible thing, even though it could cost him the election.
How could anyone think Obama can handle the economy?
I am proud of McCain and respect him.
When ask if he would return to Washington...
“If I can be helpful I’m prepared to be there at any point”. “I got a big plane with a logo painted on it”
Boy I hope the McCain campaign was taking notes. He left two great zingers for an McCain ad.

“If I can be helpful”? Congressional members are only meeting to discuss one of the most important issues of our time, and he doesn’t think he is needed? He hasn’t done anything in the Senate yet, why start now?
McCain asked to put the politics aside and work for the Country. Obummer attacked McCain and took credit.

Hope you are right. I just know how the MSM will beat the drums for how “statesman-like” the obamessiah is for continuing the debate.
And you think one of the 5 senators named in a S&L scandal has all the answers? Look McCain has been Bush's useful idiot for pushing through all his bad ideas. Look for McCain to push for the bailout. Look also for some of the beloved billionaire {Sarcasm intended} darlings of the liberals to enjoy a bail out making them even less accountable and more richer at our expense. Isn't bipartisan politics wonderful?
This bail out is simply a CTA maneuvers for political friends on both parties sides of the isle. Board of Director positions for all elected in DC supporting this upon retirement of course. For that matter I do wonder how many political families both GOP and DEM are up to their neck in this and stand to profit substantially if the bail out passes??
He’s a Senator. This is going to cost the taxpayer $700 billion. Hell yes, he ought to be there, and so should Whatsisname, the Dem candidate. Whichever way they vote they need to be on the record for this and not be able to avoid responsibility later. IMHO.
