Apple has begun airing three new "Get a Mac" ads on U.S. network and cable television.

In "Pizza Box," PC stoops to disguising himself as a pizza to get college students to even look his way.

In "Throne," PC sits atop his throne, but Mac puts a damper on his fun.

I must say that my TI-99/4A was my first ever, and still the favorite of my heart.

Sounds similar to my path. I started on an Apple II at school, but had a /4a for MY first pc...a lot of fun. I have gone thru HPs, Dells, Compaqs, eMachines, Toshibas - all with the current Windows environment.

Now I go with macs, but I didn't know I was pompous because of it. I suggested to my wife that we look at a mac, and she wasn't even interested - macs were too uppity. We decided that true uppity was not trying the platform, so we got one last summer. then another...then a third...I just talked her into waiting a few months before replacing her current HP with the 24" iMac...but it will happen soon.

Your Apple “experience” is not indicative of the reality today and please, don't use a “legacy” argument when comparing Apple and Microsoft.

The Apple police do get touchy.

My daughter bought a G4 iBook in 2004. I was not impressed to overspend for less computing power in a portable format. I'm sure that's a "legacy argument" also.

"The laptop I have in mind is $495. It’s all she needs. She isn’t gaming."

I don't game either and use my computers mostly for email, surfing the net, and burning discs. That's it. I don't even use iTunes anymore.

And If I'm going to buy a toaster, I'll make sure I get a good enough one so that I don't have to replace it in a year.

My sister was looking for a new computer. She had previously used a PC, but it wasn't hers. Since my oldest son is an Apple Tech, I figured if she had any problems with it, he'd be able to help with it. She got herself a Mac Mini for about $500. All she uses hers for is email and the internet.

"Only time this machine has been to the shop was to clean out a bug 5 years ago"

I've never had a bug or virus in all the years I've been using Macs.

;-)

Could that be due to the fact that Mac is just now only reaching 8% of the market?

The best thing about Windows products are that they keep thousands upon thousands of IT guys in business. I have an old XP laptop at home and have Vista at work. I also have two Macs. The interface on the Mac is better but the interface on the PCs isn’t that bad. The difference is that the PCs are always having constant niggling issues that need correcting while the Macs just keep plugging away with little interference needed from me. I appreciate a computer that isn’t providing aggravation.

I don't follow market percentages, but it stands to reason that the individuals who create these worms, and viruses, etc. are going to target the largest number of users of a specific operating system. I'm not a technical person, but it could also be because the Microsoft system is much easier to attack than Apple's. I really don't know.

Not to mention the fact that you get a longer usable lifespan. One of my parents uses a Mac and one a PC. Both are getting on in years and know nothing about technology. If my mother has a problem with her Mac it is usually an issue of not knowing where a menu item or something is and I can fix it over the phone. That is rarely the case when my father has an issue. As I no longer live in the area I can’t fix a lot of his problems so he has spent hundreds of dollars over the years to pay people to fix and install things. That more than makes up the difference in initial cost. If you can fix things yourself it isn’t a big deal but for someone who would have trouble setting an alarm clock it does make a difference.

“Mac’s do not allow you to run anything but their stuff, and that includes running other peoples stuff in an emulated environment. Furhtermore, PC’s allow you to run a plethora of applications and operating systems from a plethora of hardware manufacturers. In addition they cost four times as much as a PC for the same performance. So in my opinion MAC’s are the machine for elitists by elitists. “

That just plain isn’t true. For the last couple years Macs have been running on Intel chips. You can dual boot a Mac and natively run any OS you want that runs on an Intel chip. I have XP and OSX on mine and can run them at the same time or just boot up in one or the other. In fact PC world had the latest Mac laptops running Windows faster than just about any PC laptop.

Myth #1: Windows only gets attacked most because it's such a big target, and if Linux use (or indeed OS X use) grew then so would the number of attacks.

Thanks for the link, then I guess my comment about Microsoft’s OS being easier to attack than Apple’s is true?

my old TRS-80 never ever had a bug either.

my old comodore never ever had a bug either.

heck, my Next machine nver had a virus either.

it is very much a red herring.

It is like comparing crime statistices in the middle of a city with a 10 million population vs a small town with a population of 100.

I wonder if there has been a comparioson with both operating systems run on non-mac machines.

Yep, the idea that an OS should have to be replaced every 3-5 years is just bats**t insane. Especially the Windows OS's which make it all but impossible to upgrade the OS without redoing every application install and application setting in a piecemeal fashion.

An OS should provide a standard screen/keyboard/printer/file storage interface, and some basic communications protocols. Everything else should be handled through applications.

Macs are a _itch to service, tells me a certified (by the fruit company) Mac tech

He must be talking about the iMac. Mac towers are easier to service than any PC I've seen. Laptops are difficult, but so are all laptops; it's the nature of the beast. The Mini is more difficult than any other desktop PC I've worked on, but easier than laptops.

So I guess I'm imagining all of these applications from Adobe, Canon, AOL and Microsoft, not to mention a dozen or so freeware/open source apps I use every day.

I’m not sure what type of Mac he’s talking about, but he’s comparing with Dells (he’s certified in servicing those too), and talks about having to use suction cups on Macs to remove parts, complicate procedures to perform, whereas with PCs it’s a piece of cake. And he loves Macs otherwise.

Re: the pizza box

Nab, the 6360 is a cake box. The real pizza box is the 6100. I tossed about ten of those in the dump a coupla months ago.

Re: 30% growth rate

It took the Mac from 6% US market share (not installed base) last year to 8% same month this year. The rate seems to be accelerating and if it continues it will take the to 10% or more next year.
