Apple has begun airing three new "Get a Mac" ads on U.S. network and cable television.

In "Pizza Box," PC stoops to disguising himself as a pizza to get college students to even look his way.

MacWorld -- The planet's largest mutual admiration society

I had a scheduled PC laptop replacement at work a couple of weeks ago and it is an HP with Windows XP Professional.     My last three Personal Computer purchases at home were HP's.     My wife's laptop is a Toshiba with Vista and my HP also has Vista.

I always understood that Mac users invented calming tea!     I stay calm by knowing that I have never felt pompous enough to consider owning a Mac.

I must say that my TI-99/4A was my first ever, and still the favorite of my heart.

In recent months I have added both a new laptop and desktop to the computing farm here. Both run Vista Home Premium. Both operate without a hitch and have had no issues with older peripherals.

Our Mac experience was painful and brief. Wife bought one for her graphics needs...1) paid way more than a comparable PC-based system, 2) monitor committed suicide, 3) ongoing problems with peripherals (scanner, printer), 4) unable to upgrade the OS beyond 8.5 (as I recall) and 5) is now a lovely doorstop.

I have no interest in repeating any of that experience.

As a stockholder I am glad that Apple is not into sinking MS, but is in the business to make money.

Hm, let’s play a little with that statement. Take it back in time, oh, 20 years.

“If Toyota really wants to bring down GM, they should drop the price of a Corolla.”

Yeah... Toyota didn’t, and now GM is the #2 maker in the world.

I believe Macs are much better now, but I have to say that the two people I know personally who’ve bought Mac laptops in the last year have been disappointed.

On guy bought one for his daughter at school. she likes it, but it has had several catistrophic failures. Two dvd drives, a hard drive, and part of the case warped so it wouldn’t close.

The other guy sold his. He never got it to work with his business software.

False comparison. Toyota wasn't better than GM 20 years ago. Now Toyota offers a better product than GM at a very similar price.

Apple on the other had offers a better product at a much higher price.

If they are not content with their market share, they could drop the price and basically sink Microsoft right now while Microsoft is dealing with the Vista backlash.

Additionally, I hope Apple in the future works to reign in fanboys who are a negative commercial for Apple's superior product. You can't say one critical thing about Apple's products or business model without a swarm of fanboys descending and attacking.

What does this 30 percent growth rate take Mac to, in terms of market share?

Yes, but do they last as long or have lesser problems than a Mac?

I am talking to you now on a Windows 98 computer. Only time this machine has been to the shop was to clean out a bug 5 years ago, no problems since them.

20 years ago was 1988. Toyota WAS better than GM, and as with today, they cost more, sometimes a lot more.

In 1988, this was GM's offering in the compact car class:

This was Toyota's:

You *still* see a lot of the Toyotas around. The 2nd generation Cavaliers are all but extinct. Toyota sold less of them and they cost notably more than the Cavalier.

As someone pointed out, Apple is interested in making money, not sinking Microsoft. Microsoft will die in time. There's no need to rush it... which is the same strategy Toyota has, as documented in many books.

So based on your experiences more than NINE YEARS AGO, you have decided never to buy a Mac? Mac OS 8.5 was introduced in 1999. If you could not upgrade past that, then you must have bought your Mac prior to that!

Mac OS 8.5 was the first Mac OS to require a PowerPC processor. Machines running OS 7 (introduced in 1991) were generally upgradable to OS 8, until 8.5 came along. You would think that supporting machine made up to SEVEN YEARS EARLIER would be enough.

For comparison, in 1991, Windows was on version 3.0. Minimum hardware requirements were:

8086/8088 processor or better
640K conventional memory
a hard disk with 6-7MB of free space
CGA/EGA/VGA/Hercules/8514/a graphics and an appropriate and compatible monitor

Windows 3.0 was made to run on 286/386 chips, which weren't widely used until 1993 or so.

Windows 95 came out four years later in 1995. The minimum requirements were:

Intel 80386 DX CPU of any speed,
4 MB of system RAM
50 MB of hard drive space

But recommended specs were:

Intel 80486 or compatible microprocessor
least 8 MB of RAM

So we have APPLE supporting legacy systems for SEVEN YEARS and MICROSOFT forcing hardware upgrades after only FOUR YEARS.

BTW, check out the Microsoft OS timeline and you will see that they do that just about EVERY four years. Checking out the Apple OS timeline will show that Apple supports it's computers MUCH longer.

Your Apple “experience” is not indicative of the reality today and please, don't use a “legacy” argument when comparing Apple and Microsoft.

Two dvd drives, a hard drive, and part of the case warped so it wouldn’t close.

It would seem Mac's hard drive problems carried over to I-pod. Bought my wife and I-Pod two years ago has had constant hard drive problems. Sent it back to Apple under my Apple care warranty, they claimed they could find nothing wrong and sent it back. The unit finally crashed this week. The genius and the genius bar at my local Apple store told me to scrap it and get a nano. Don't care to mess with any more products from Apple.

My apologies, I need to clean up my previous post.

It would seem Mac's hard drive problems carried over to I-pod. I bought my wife an I-Pod two years ago. The unit has had constant hard drive problems, in particular, crashing for unexplained reasons in the middle of a song. I sent it back to Apple under my Apple care warranty, they claimed they could find nothing wrong and sent it back. The unit finally crashed for good this week. The genius at the genius bar at my local Apple store told me that the hard drive was no good and to scrap it and get a nano.I don't care to mess with any more products from Apple.

Don’t diss the Cavalier. I had a ‘92 and it was an excellent car, including very tough for all the rough ancient, forgotten dirt-road grave-hunting I did with it. Had it for 8 years (used) and finally got the bug when it was 10yo and had some stuff crop up.

Toyota was not better than GM 20 years ago. And I seriously doubt the high end Toyotas were vastly more expensive than the high end Cadillacs of 1988.

Really? Windows XP was released in 2001 and I am still using it 7 YEARS later. Sounds familar.

In the marketspaces where they competed, yes, they WERE better.

Remember, Apple doesn’t really compete on the enterprise server end, either.

Also, the Cadillacs of 1988 were crap. They were just dressed up Chevrolets, with the same crappy interior bits, and they fell apart just as fast.

If you want to get down to it, *9* years ago, Toyota released a car that made ALL the 89 Cadillacs look weak and lame - the LS400.
