A woman who grew to be 7 feet, 7 inches tall and was recognized as the world's tallest female died early Wednesday, a friend said. She was 53.
Sandy Allen, who used her height to inspire schoolchildren to accept those who are different, died at a nursing home in her hometown of Shelbyville, family friend Rita Rose said.

In a nursing home at 53, that is kind of sad in itself.
A shame. She was a very nice woman. My better half grew up down the street from her.
A fact I have never seen mentioned: Her husband (also passed away) also had some sort of gigantism.
Isn’t the world’s oldest woman also in the same nursing home in Shelbyville? She might have died as well. I seem to remember reading that about 9 months ago.
I watch the Discovery Channel documentary on her every time it’s on. She was really extraordinary.
She seems like a nice person who simply wanted to have a normal, regular life. Like most folks. RIP Sandy Allen.
RIP Sandy - She was a very nice woman from the documentaries that were done about her.
The article mentioned that aspect. I only used a brief excerpt, because it was AP material.
I have never heard of her before now. Sounds like her life was pleasing to God.
Look for her story on the science channels. I’m sure they’ll be re-run because she’s gone.
The square-cube law is hard on the heart. RIP Ms. Allen.
RIP
Sandy never had a husband .... where’d you get that? She had very good care in the nursing home and had a lot of visitors, so not as bad as some may think. It was the best place for her considering her health issues. Sandy was my friend for 31 years .... please check out the website for the book I wrote about her: “World’s Tallest Woman: The Giantess of Shelbyville High,”

Yes, Edna Parker, age 115, was in the same nursing home. She passed away in November 2008, just three months after Sandy Allen died.

It wasn’t. She had very good care there. Not all nursing homes suck.
She was in the Guinness Book of Records from 1976-2009 and you never heard of her? She was all over TV during most of those years.
I found out after the fact it was not her. I should have posted a correction.
You’re probably thinking of Anna Swan and Martin Van Buren Bates, 18th century married giants. They traveled with different circuses, then retired and moved to Ohio where they eventually died, she before him.
