Why? A couple of questions come to mind. WHo is paying for these kids is one.

Their parents are paying for them and these kids are some of the nicest, smartest and most polite kids you'll ever meet.

In case you didn't know Free Republic is a very pro life environment that loves and encourages large loving families. If you don'tt, why are you here?

and can't move to a less populated area when their family grows.

An unfortunate fact: In MI right now, you can't do that, unless you are financially able to carry two mortgages or are willing to walk away from your house. Our home has been on the market for three years now, no relief in sight.

It's not always that easy.

WHo is paying for these kids is one.

James Robert Duggar is.

Just how much parental care and guidence is each one getting is another.

All the children need - which is why they are such well-adjusted, articulate and energetic individuals.

And what benefit is there to society from having 18 children come from a single litter from two parents

Either you don't know what a litter is, or you intentionally are insulting this family by calling their children a "litter" as if they were beasts instead of people, or both.

rather than 18 children coming from 18 pairs of parents?

18 children coming from 18 pairs of parents represents a precipitous demographic decline of 50% - a trend that would represent a demographic death spiral within 40 years.

From the viewpoint of your standard-issue John Q. Public, a 9:1 ratio of young people to old people as represented by the Duggar family means fully-funded Social Security and Medicare for decades to come.

It means a country that does not have to import millions of foreigners to fill the 50% of jobs left unfilled by those 18 only children from the 18 other families.

It means, in the Duggar context, a family where sharing time and space with one's fellow human beings is an act of love and Christian compassion rather than a rat race between atomistic individuals.

It also means an unshakable belief in and optimism for society's future.

A society that doesn't believe in itself has only children or no children and is eventually snuffed out by outsiders who do believe in themselves.

Maybe you should do a little research before you post.

I know the Duggars, they have never taken any government handouts. Pay cash for all their expenses. Jim Bob has served as state representative. Additionally, they don’t even utilize the local schools, thus freeing up funds for others kids.

The way I understand, Mr. Duggar is a successful businessperson; they are financially independent, and well able to support their family.

College tuition is approximately $35,000 annually now. 4 x 18 x $40,000 (for price increases) gives $2,880,000 Not an impossible figure, but still a large one even for most business people. I still question the quality of their childhood when looking at the amount of parental time any one child will have. Look at single parent families, and those probably have more time with the kids than these will. And single parent kids generally are not as happy or as successfull as two parent kids.

I feel for you, we went through the same thing trying to get out of Delaware.

Keep the faith, friend, keep the faith.

No, the birth of every child is a beautiful and blessed event. Just take a day and visit a maternity ward in San Diego, Los Angeles, New York, New Orleans, Phoenix, Houston, San Antonio, Miami, Boise or Detroit and you will see to blessing of Newly born American Citizens and bundles of joy.

I know the Duggars

Yep real objective post from you there good buddy. And if you'll try reading comprehension 101 you'll note I posed my issues as questions, not statements of fact.

While you’re being so intelligent why don’t you try answering the other two questions. (or that one too for that matter)

OK.

WHo is paying for these kids is one.

The Duggars.

Just how much parental care and guidence is each one getting is another.

I would think that it's considerably more than the average American child. The oldest ones are obviously grown now, they homeschool the rest, and I bet none of them has seen the inside of a daycare center.

As for your "benefit to society" issue, that's just as irrelevant (and none of your business) as some Brady-type asking how it benefits society for you to own guns.

Personally, I think the Duggars are as goofy as a three-dollar bill, but as long as they're self-supporting I don't see any need for them to answer to anyone about how they run their family.

Oh yes, that would be wonderful if all the families in San Diego, Los Angeles, New York New Orleans, San Antonio, Houston, Phoenix, Miami, Boise, Chicago and Detroit had 18 children.

If every husband and wife in a devoutly Christian home like the Duggars' home accepted all the children that God blessed them with - be it 4 or 8 or 16 or 20 - it would be wonderful indeed.

I pray for families like the Duggars and I hope as many families as possible follow their example.

I did click on the link, but since the source is hardly objective, I didn’t give it much creedence

Okay, Detroit is a unique case, but I'm pretty sure even in the down market, you could sell your house in San Diego, Los Angeles, New York, San Antonio, Houston, Phoenix, Miami, Boise, and Chicago. If you bought 2 years ago, it might be a problem, but you plan a family more than 2 years in advance right?

I think the benefit is in the tax credit....18 X 1200 .. something over $21K...pretty much negates the taxes on a $60K plus income... Live large, live conservative, no taxes.... love it!

Wouldn't be a bit surprised if they get audited every year.

This may surprise you, but in this I agree as long as thy;re paying the full cost for the kids. What I find amazing is the number of posters on this thread that think this is a good idea. I think I've wandered into a fundamentalist bible thumping alternative universe - keep 'em barefoot and pregnant. What ever gives people the idea that uncontrolled reproduction is a conservative value. If this were the case then you could call every crack ho with a brood a conservative.

As for me, I am Catholic and my wife is Jewish, we have two kids. Would if be okay for us to have 18 more kids or do you only approve of such actions by those whose faith you agree with?

I work with a Muslim who has five kids, can I tell him that Wideawake wants him to have 15 more children?

The Catholic Church I attend is majority Hispanic. Can I go to church next Sunday and tell them all that Wideawake wants them to have 20 children?

Don’t worry about the house, it will sell as long as you are asking the right price.

WHo is paying for these kids is one. They are. They have no debt and are very frugal.

Just how much parental care and guidence is each one getting is another. More than any child in public school. Each older child is responsible for helping a younger child and being a mentor. The parents homeschool. There are fewer (by half, at least) children in her class than in any public school class you have today.

And what benefit is there to society from having 18 children come from a single litter from two parents rather than 18 children coming from 18 pairs of parents? No real answer, but a small jest... Economy of scale???
