We went to see her yesterday. I didn't go in because I could barely walk (so hip and knees) and it's quite a distance to her room.

Greg bought her a nice orchid corsage. It looked like no one else gave her anything.

She has good days when she will talk up a storm and bad ones when she is very quiet. Our big concern is that tries to get out of her wheel chair and bed unassisted. THat's not good.

No, it isn't good, and they all think they can get out and about by themselves.

(((Lysie & Gregg)))

I totally understand your worry.

When mom first moved down here she was able to carry on a fairly good conversation, but after the strokes last fall, she just sits and joins in occasionally. She has no short term memory, so she has a hard time getting more than a sentence or two out before she forgets what she’s talking about.

That makes it hard for everybody.

Good morning all, just a quick note to report that we returned home safely and I’m now in the process of trying to catch up.

Prayers for all who need them.

Hi, everybody. I'm taking a break from shampooing carpeting and wondering why in the world I had only put hardwood floors in the dining room and hallway.

(My only excuse besides stupidity is that I had not watched any HGTV before I had the deed done some years ago.)

Back to it or I'll never finish. LOL

Well, get a load of this one:

A couple of weeks ago when I was with Mom, she was wearing a muted plaid jacket I had given her for Christmas. She held her arm up to the light, inspected the jacket and said:

“I don’t know why I ever bought this thing. The color isn’t anything like it looked in the store”

I reminded her that I had purchased the jacket. Hubby was annoyed with me and thought I should have just let it ride (he’s a softy). But when I step in and insist on a move, I want to be able to remind her (whether she remembers or not) about all the totally confused things she’s said and done.

Without being disrepectful, as I'm sure you were not, sometimes we have to mentally challenge them a bit. We want to keep them aware and alert.

Dusty and I were sitting at the table with mom the other night and she asked if Mic (stray kitty) had had her litter yet and I replied she had brought one little black kitty into the yard, then promptly removed it. Mom looked straight at me and said “well your dad likes black cats, so he should be happy”. Hubby likes Gray Tabby cats and they are the only ones he likes. Dusty asked her if she meant MY real dad or his dad. She then said - while looking straight at hime “your dad”. So we both don’t know if she thought he was one of my deceased brothers or if she just thought hubby liked black cats. You never know what she’ll say.

Yes, since my Stepdad has passed, I’ve encouraged her to get involved in her church circle and other clubs again. She needs the mental stimulation of getting programs ready when it’s her turn to do so.

She knows her memory is failing. But it is not at the point where she needs supervision.

EXAMPLE: When she puts anything on the stovetop to cook, she carrys a timer in an apron pocket to remind her to check it.

She seems to be managing well, and is taking precautions to compensate for her weaknesses. Only time will tell.

Or you could just break down and buy a Blackberry, like I did. I set the alarm for almost every appointment I have. It's the only way I remember.

Am I my Mother's Keeper? Or are my kids only humoring me?
