This evening my friend who loves DIY and doing things hence he has a lot of unfinished projects around the house fitted 2 towel rails and a loo roll holder in the bathroom which nearly finishes my bathroom project.

All to go is vinyl flooring to be laid and sort out tiles around the bath (long term job).

Is your home functional, decorative, needs attention and somewhat tired or well maintained and modern?

This seems more like a gender thing. It's amazing what guys can put up with. Introduce a female and all heck breaks loose.

Need some advice on planting a Rose Hedge, this, I think, is an English type of thing. I need a rose variety that spreads.

Would a guy who can “DIY” be somehow more attractive to a lady?

Hmmmm, well let's test this theory...

We here in America have a show called "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition", in which a team of builders and designers rebuild and redesign homes for families in need, often from the ground up.

The head honcho is a guy named Ty Pennington, who looks something like this:

Now, from what I can tell, Ty is a fairly knowledgable carpenter, but some women (some of them who I know personally) like to see him without his shirt on--which you can google search on your own time.

At any rate, I think in the U.S. we have at least 3 or 4 entire television channels solely devoted to DIY and home improvement. I can only think it would help in my case, but I draw the line at a certain point. If it has anything to do with major repairs (plumbing, electrical work, etc.), I'm going to let a professional do the work...it's a simple allocation of resources if you think about it.

"Does your home reflect your single status including your attitudes towards it or are they formed from childhood and how your parents home was like. Is your home functional, decorative, needs attention and somewhat tired or well maintained and modern? If you had a partner do you think it would be different?"

My decorating style is totally different from anyone in my family. Kind of severe, limited decoration, modern, functional, somewhat well-maintained. My family are addicted to clutter. If there's space on the wall there must be something hanging there, if there's an empty shelf there must be something sitting there! Not sure how a home would reflect an attitude towards my single status...it's decorated how I like, with no input from someone else? If my home would look different would depend on the person I was with considering the description above as it's not decorated in a necessarily "girly" way.

Just did a DYI with my lawnmower tonight. Brother needed to work on his truck so he instructed me what to do. We both finished our projects successfully. Now I can do yarkwork tomorrow. My hands are still dirty and greasy.

Lots of finished and unfinished DYI around my place. I would do a lot more but the body isn't as cooperative as it was years ago. Plus priorities have changed. So it's a little here and a little there after I have my fill of kayaking and fishing and camping and shooting and biking and...

This is a different kinda thread :-) I would say ‘Of Course’, Not to mention past hobbies that pileup!

***Does your home reflect your single status including your attitudes towards it or are they formed from childhood and how your parents home was like.***

Needs some attention and adequate. It would probably change with a partner, not picky with that kind of thing.

***Is your home functional, decorative, needs attention and somewhat tired or well maintained and modern? If you had a partner do you think it would be different?***

I think so. He would be saving them money for the household.

If he was not a pratical person either around the house or with cars/bikes or other machines would that make him somehow less attractive, appealing or at least “marketable”?

I suspect it would, at least to women with a brain.

On the otherhand does women doing DIY stuff etc more or less appealing to men?

I sure wouldn't mind. I could always learn from her, and I think I would even find it sexy.

I'm not much of a carpenter, in fact I can't hit a nail too well, but I'm useful in other DIY stuff like fixing radios and tackling an occasional TV. I've also done minor auto repairs. The reason why I wasn't around much last week is last Friday (May 2nd) was my last day on my job so I'm job hunting again. In fact, my Ford Explorer needs front rotors and rear drums along with brake shoes for both brake systems, an exhaust system and some work on the right, rear rocker panel (under the right, rear door) for it to pass inspection. Although it failed and I shouldn't be driving it but I have no choice. Still when my buddy and I get the parts, we will work on it together. I admit I could use a vacation, but it is a helluva way to get one.

At least I can get caught up on some things I need to do for the house like my neglected hedges, clean the basement, and watch to see of the Pittsburgh Penguins get to the Stanley Cup so I plan to just take it easy for a few weeks and take it from there. Anyhoo, the Wings Over Pittsburgh Airshow is this weekend, expect some pictures from me.

The Canadian Snowbirds are on the top bill this year but I've been buzzed by everything from a World War II C-54 that was in the Berlin Airlift, to F-16's, to F-18's, to F-22's. Heck, we can stage our own dogfights. B-) I know the UK has their "Red Arrows," I wish they would come here and perform. BTW, a C-130 flew over my house, I thought he was going to take off my roof. B-)

Hello snugs!

I LOVE DIY projects. Not for themselves, though; for the house. We have a big old house, formerly a convent, and it was falling down. Been rehabbing it for years, loving every minute!

I was raised by an unusually intelligent and academically oriented mother (the absent-minded professor sort) and my father died when I was very young, so we had to hire people or shift for ourselves.

I learned a lot about home improvement and a lot about men. The doctors and lawyers and bankers out there, aren’t nearly as appealing as the plumbers and paper hangers and landscapers.

Moreover, when you see the doctor or the lawyer or the banker coming, you’re not particularly happy to see them. But when the fellow comes to get things done, it’s “Oh thank Heavens you’re here!”

If I ever get married and have kids, I promised Mom long ago I’d make sure they got vocational training, even if they’re geniuses.

Thanks for posting the pics! They’re great (as always!)
