Folding@Home - The Race For 50 Million!
Folding@Home Forum ^ | 04/22/2008 | Vijay Pande

Posted on 05/04/2008 8:43:25 AM PDT by texas booster

In the near future, we will be releasing some new projects which require a very rapid turn-around time. These are peptide fragment simulations which we are interested in simulating for a time-sensitive collaborative project involving protein structure prediction.

These WUs will go directly to the classic clients running with -advmethods. Non-classic clients (eg SMP, GPU, PS3) will not be affected, as all of these calculations will be run via the AMBER core and only the classic client supports the AMBER core.

To reward users for participating in this exciting project, we will be giving a x1.5 bonus in the points awarded. What's the catch? These projects will be less rigorously beta tested, so there will be an increased risk of Early_Unit_End errors. We believe the risk of this is minor (there will likely be a higher rate of early unit ends, especially very early in the WU, but we do not expect client machines to become significantly less stable). However, if you do not wish to participate in this project, just remove the -advmethods setting from your client.

This will not last forever and will likely go back to normal -advmethods usage in a few months. With that said, we do plan other uses for -adv in the future.

Note: the text was updated to clarify that this is classic clients only.

Look at post 35 for a common path for F@H. It seems that the install program installs to the Program Files directory, whereas I usually install to a root directory like BritYank.

When you look at the program properties it gives you the path, all I did was add switches to it. Without the switches it works fine but as soon as I try to add the switches it gives the path not found error. Take the switches out again and it works fine.

OK, add me to the list of ‘dropped out of sight, but still folding’ freepers who is confused by the instructions.

I have F@H installed here: C:\Program Files\Folding@Home
I also have a link in my services file that points to here, so it automatically restarts whenever I restart my machine (rarely). I would assume I have the GUI installation, because when I right-click on the red cog-wheel in the lower right of my screen, I can look at the display.

I dont’ know nuthin’ ‘bout no switches, or adding what-not to the program to let it get the -adv or whatever new-fangled and important projects, but I’m definitely interested.

I’m pretty computer-savvy, but I am having trouble following this. Can anyone help a sister out?

I haven’t even glanced at my folding progress for probably a year.

Looks like my home machines haven’t suffered too much from the inattention. Hmmm, not so, I’m getting a “work unit has invalid address” and “no other work to do” messages on one machine.

I just reinstalled everything and am still getting the same message, any ideas? OK, looks like it was just Stanford’s server down a bit, all’s well now.

I do see they have not uninstalled FAH from my office computer and that is chugging along according to Egon’s monitor. I have been working out of the office for the past year or so.

I used to have restart problems in the heat of summer on one of my machines. Running FAH at 100% would cause spontaneous reboots due to high CPU temperature if it was warm in the house. Doesn’t seem likely this would happen at night like yours, but it might be worth a check.

Do you have a utility to check the temperature of the CPU? I use MBM5 to monitor the problem machine and it can be set to keep a log.

Throttling the CPU to 90% for a month or two in hot weather worked for me until I got a better cooling fan.

Congrats on going over 200,000! It looks like you now have 6 systems going. Way to upgrade your own systems, then pass the F@H systems down to the kids.

Running FAH at 100%

My cpu usage for F@H has been running at 95% for over a year now. I'm beginning to think that it's some firefox add-on. My computer went haywire about a week ago and I started a thread on my problem. I removed the many add-ons and my computer stopped shutting down as I slept and the many many other problems I encountered.

For two mornings I woke up and my pc was still running. As I said, I may have to recheck my add-ons and see if one of them is giving me the problem.

I'm gonna scream if I start getting that nasty error message again.

Tech Vanity

You won’t lose any stats so long as you use the same user name (and don’t forget team 36120). You will probably lose the completed portion of the current job with a reinstall.

If you use a different user name the points will accumulate to that user name and aren’t transferable. But, you can change back at any time.

Well I should have the jobs I'm curently working on done by tomorrow, if I don't hear of an answer to why you can't add switches to a GUI setup I'll try the reinstall one one of my machines and see if it does any good.

I downloaded and ran a new GUI installation to check.

I couldn't see anywhere to check off the advanced methods downloads, but I believe that BritYank’s instructions above will work fine.

I'll be working on this tomorrow night when I get to my hotel.

If anyone decides to erase and start over, well, its drastic but sometimes the fastest way to get folding again.

Read the file called “FAHlog.txt” and see what the last entries are. On my new GUI system, its:

[05:00:07] - Error: Attempt #3 to get work failed, and no other work to do.
Waiting before retry.
[05:00:35] + Attempting to get work packet
[05:00:35] - Connecting to assignment server
[05:00:50] + Could not connect to Assignment Server
[05:01:06] + Could not connect to Assignment Server 2
[05:01:06] + Couldn't get work instructions.
[05:01:06] - Error: Attempt #4 to get work failed, and no other work to do.
Waiting before retry.
[05:01:54] + Attempting to get work packet
[05:01:54] - Connecting to assignment server
[05:02:09] + Could not connect to Assignment Server

Well, hello proxy server issue. Not a big deal, I'll work on it tomorrow.

What are the last lines on your FAHlog.txt?

"I will still get blown away by EasySt, but at least it will take him another week to catch me!"

Right now http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_overtake.php?s=&u=185134
indicates that it could be as much as 4.5 YEARS before I come knocking at your door... ;-) A lot can happen in time, but it will be quite a while before I have any hope of adding more systems to my effort. Happy Folding and thanks for the ping!

No sooner than I say that, I get a ping from a old friend all the way over in London, England who just bought himself a shiny new PS3. I may be adding another system to our effort sooner than I thought... ;-)

I'll be working on this tomorrow night when I get to my hotel.

It appears that the GUI won't work with command line switches. I have tried adding the switches to the shortcut, the program runs without the switches when you add the switches it gives an error. You get the same error and the same results if you start it manually from the Start/Run command line.

If anyone decides to erase and start over, well, its drastic but sometimes the fastest way to get folding again.

Actually you get remembered and go right back to where you were before you uninstalled/reinstalled. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling using the FAH uninstaller then when that didn't do anything different I tried uninstalling it with a program I have called Your Uninstaller which not only uninstalls it but goes through the registry looking for any leftover traces. Then I rebooted to make sure everything was gone, installed it again and it STILL remembered my name and stats.

It's not that big of a deal, I'm not at the same level as you guys I was just hoping to get into the top 200, I'm somewhere around 217 now.

Well, hello proxy server issue. Not a big deal, I'll work on it tomorrow. What are the last lines on your FAHlog.txt?

It looks like I'm having the same connection problems you are:

[11:01:27] + Attempting to send results
[11:01:30] Couldn't send HTTP request to server (wininet)
[11:01:30] + Could not connect to Work Server (results)
[11:01:30] (171.64.122.76:80)
[11:01:30] Could not transmit unit 04 to Collection server; keeping in queue.
[11:45:43] + Attempting to get work packet
[11:45:43] - Connecting to assignment server
[11:45:43] - Successful: assigned to (0.0.0.0).
[11:45:43] + News From Folding@Home: Welcome to Folding@Home [11:45:43] Work Unit has an invalid address.
[11:45:43] - Error: Attempt #14 to get work failed, and no other work to do. Waiting before retry.

A happy user here, recommending Egon’s tracker.

The only way I can tell that my computer back in the office (where I never go since I was assigned to a new location) is still folding is by checking on Egon’s server.

It’s really neat for checking remote machines and I even occasionally use it to check my home machines, just because it’s easy.

If the red flower is in the bottom corner, then you are running smoothly.

Right click on the flower, go to “Status”, and click on the log file.

If you would cut ‘n paste the bottom ten lines or so we will see what's going on.
