Folding@Home - The Race For 50 Million!
Folding@Home Forum ^ | 04/22/2008 | Vijay Pande

Posted on 05/04/2008 8:43:25 AM PDT by texas booster

In the near future, we will be releasing some new projects which require a very rapid turn-around time. These are peptide fragment simulations which we are interested in simulating for a time-sensitive collaborative project involving protein structure prediction.

These WUs will go directly to the classic clients running with -advmethods. Non-classic clients (eg SMP, GPU, PS3) will not be affected, as all of these calculations will be run via the AMBER core and only the classic client supports the AMBER core.

To reward users for participating in this exciting project, we will be giving a x1.5 bonus in the points awarded. What's the catch? These projects will be less rigorously beta tested, so there will be an increased risk of Early_Unit_End errors. We believe the risk of this is minor (there will likely be a higher rate of early unit ends, especially very early in the WU, but we do not expect client machines to become significantly less stable). However, if you do not wish to participate in this project, just remove the -advmethods setting from your client.

This will not last forever and will likely go back to normal -advmethods usage in a few months. With that said, we do plan other uses for -adv in the future.

Note: the text was updated to clarify that this is classic clients only.

Are you running on OS/X or OS/9?

OS X of course. Running the SMP client on the iMac.

Thanks for the ping and the info; I had my XP machine clobbered by an update, so I've been remiss in getting everything back up to speed.

you mentioned running the GUI with -advmethods -- you can create a second shortcut in your F@H folder, then place that icon on your desktop and add the switches there: C:\FAH1\winFAH.exe -local -verbosity 9 -advmethods -- same thing for the Console version. That way you can add or subtract as needed. Make sure you have shut down the running session of F@H first, and if you have more than one running they point to individual cores and work folders.

A ping out to folder who haven't sent in a work unit in the past month or so.

If you have a new computer please reinstall Folding@home with your previous name so that you can start adding to all of your old points.

Some of the new computers that I have are very, very fast even with just a normal console version.

If you are folding for another team then have at it (unless you want to change back to Team 36120)!

And if you are a casualty of the political wars on our site, and lurking just to check it out, please continue folding, either for 36120 or for another conservative team.

Unless you want to become Ronald_Reagan for the Dummies team, just to tweak them!

Also, whoever is “3626Hawthorn” please ping in so we can help get you restarted.

OK, we may not want to go here ...

The Dell BIOS is access by hitting the F2 key (?) when you first start out, and it will let you into a special section of the computer that keeps the setting when the computer is turned off.

Normally I would just say to get professional help. Maybe a local geek to look at it.

Its probably a Windows update or a driver issue that causing the problem.

Anyone else want to take a stab at this?

Is this the standard install for F@H or do you have to modify your setup to take advantage of it? If you do have to modify it, how? I run 2 pcs with Win2k

I use the console versions, so I need to fire up a GUI for comparison.

In the console version using “-adv” is NOT the default. You need to enter the “Changed Advanced Setting” during installation to get there.

Which version are you running?

If the GUI, I would change the icon that points to F@H and add BritYank’s code:

C:\FAH1\winFAH.exe -local -verbosity 9 -advmethods

(changing C:\F@H1 to the location of your folder).

By using his code and restarting the system you will be able to start using the -advmethods setting.

I turn it on for all but the systems with the lowest memory in them.

You need to make sure that your F@H program path is the same as that currently running; in most solo apps the string is C:\My Documents\[user_name]\[F@H_folder]\WinFAH.exe [Bracket items are your system dependent].

Same error message here. Do I have to uninstall it, reinstall it and do the change advanced settings option like suggested in another post?

thanks.

I don't have FAH in the location you indicated it might be.
I run a shortcut in my “Startup: folder.

It's a shortcut from:
“C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe”

Oh well. We'll get it.

I tried your settings in the shortcut, I also tried running the program with the switches from the run menu and it still gives the “location not found” error

Okay. Dell running XP sp2, dual 3MHz processors, 2GB ram.

Will you suggest what I should download... there’s a lot of beta versions... or point me to a post?

I had an old version and the folder is still there in Program Files. There isn’t an uninstall. Will it update?

Thanks!

Look at post 35 for a common path for F@H. It seems that the install program installs to the Program Files directory, whereas I usually install to a root directory like BritYank.

I'll check in later.

Go into your F@H directory and look at the F@H log. Go to the bottom of it and see if it still runs.
