Here is the dirty little secret, they are turning XP into Vista.
Maybe they can patch my MSFT stock so it will stop its flat trend. lol

They also announced an update for Vista. The new update wipes out your drive and installs XP.

includes 1,100 fixesThe good news is that there's only 1,100 fixes.
The bad news is that each fix is a 20MB download.

MSFT is down 1.45% today.
Darn... come on, you guys have zero debt, low PE, and about $24Billion in cash on hand, let's do something good instead of turning into a giant version of Apache.

I tried the SP3 update from MajorGeeks last evening.
It would get about 2/3 of the way through, then error out and uninstall itself. The error was a pop up box that didn’t give much information, except ‘access denied’.
I tried twice. The 2nd time, I shut down every thing I could. It errored out again, with the same ‘access denied’.

Time to turn off your automatic updates then, at least if you rely on your computer for critical things - school, banking, FreeRepublic. Better to wait a few days to let the dust settle and avoid the recall. Isn’t the conventional rule of thumb to never trust the first release of anything from Redmond?

I just turned off automatic updates. Given Microsoft’s history of screwing things up the first few tries there is no way I would want this done automatically.

I installed a Beta version of SP3 on a bunch of computers about a month ago. So far I ran into only one glitch, and that was on newly built computer.
I installed SP3 before installing the driver for the built in sound card. After which, Windows wouldn’t recognize the sound card. I had to uninstall the service pack, install the driver, then reinstall SP3.
I’ve seen no bad side effects on any other computer.

this site says it is delayed again...:
http://www.crn.com/software/207403064
"Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) has decided to hold off on releasing Windows XP service pack 3 through Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center due to a glitch that affects one of its Dynamics products. The problem stems from a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and both XP SP3 and Vista SP1, a Microsoft spokesperson said in an email to ChannelWeb. Microsoft, which last week targeted Tuesday, April 29 for public distribution of XP SP3, is preparing to block PCs running Dynamics RMS from downloading XP SP3 and Vista SP1 through Windows Update and the Download Center, the spokesperson said."
