If you didnt have your calendar marked this day (04/29/2008) is an important day; the third service pack for Windows XP has been released to Windows Update today. It may not be trickling down just yet but several sites have already posted manual updates that can be downloaded.
DailyTech reports that Microsoft hasnt yet posted an official download for SP3 but BetaNews does have a download link that goes straight back to Windows Update.
Windows XP SP3 is more than just a regular Service Pack including more than 1,100 hotfixes/patches which has new features such as Network Access Protection and Black Hole Router detection.
SP3 will also bring new life into the operating system that so many are unwilling to give up for Windows Vista. Windows XP SP3 is roughly a 316MB download and will be hitting automatic updates later today or if youre feeling more adventurous, can be manually downloaded right now. At least you wont have to hunt down a shady source for the update any more.

Time to turn off your automatic updates then, at least if you rely on your computer for critical things - school, banking, FreeRepublic. Better to wait a few days to let the dust settle and avoid the recall. Isn’t the conventional rule of thumb to never trust the first release of anything from Redmond?
Not a promising sign...
I suspect our contract IT guys will be busy the next few days.
I figured. Just teasing about the 20MB files. :)
Prolly oughta make a sammich or two . . .
maybe it's just me, but has FR been relatively sluggish the past couple days ??

My XP never crashes, which is good enough for me.
I’ll wait.
I’ve been on Vista and SP1 for months now and have no complaints. I am a software engineer by trade and heavy end user ( sorry no gaming BS ) so I cannot quite get the beef. Vista works fine once you turn off the unnecessary overhead junk and learn how to use it.
Yes
I just turned off automatic updates. Given Microsoft’s history of screwing things up the first few tries there is no way I would want this done automatically.
I have Vista, automatic updates and so far no problems since last August.
I didn't know Bill Gates was a Freeper!
LOL..It’s true! I read all the threads, though, because one never knows.
I have my automatic updates set to notify. That way I can choose and control what is downloaded to the machine. More than once I have deleted the selection to download IE7. I just don’t want it since I use Firefox for most everything (some videos won’t load under Firefox, I use IE View to access them).
I have an XP Home SP2 machine in my basement I use as a test bed. I'll be downloading and installing SP3 tonight.
I have to reload an image back on after I messed it up last night but I'll report any major cockups in SP3 here as time goes on.
kewl, thanks Sam !
