Steve Jobs should write a note to Bill Gates, thanking him for introducing Vista.

Vista is a nightmare of an operating system. Yes others are tired of the Microsoft nonsense and switched to an OS that make sense and is stable. Mac runs on a variant of Free BSD. And its browser program Safari is very fast and works great.

Microsoft has made a huge mistake by putting this Turkey out there. No Thanks I will pass on buying a PC with it.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing. As an Apple shareholder, I would like to say “Thank you Bill Gates! Thank you for that POS Vista platform!”

Vista is a horror. I bought a new laptPC in early March. The computer crashed on the first day of use. It has crashed repeatedly ever since. All sorts of screwy things keep happening. It is a complete and utter disaster.

Macs also seem to be gaining ground in the corporate world. My son is in grad school and has taken a summer internship. He uses a MacBook Pro for school and loves it, but he’s a GA for the MIS dept. at the University, so he’s constantly having to deal with the problems encountered with MS platforms. The first thing he mentioned to us about the summer internship...the entire company uses Macs.

Looks like Microsoft has been flat for several years now.

Here is the five-year chart -

Mr G’s laptop died and he needed a new one *now*! He couldn’t find any without Vista, and after listening to him moan and groan about it I finally put him in the car, took him to the apple store, and MADE him buy a Mac.

He loves it.

My step mother is happy as can be since spending about $1000 more for a Mac than she would have spent for a PC back in February. I used to get calls from her about twice a week with problems she was having on her old PC, and now we rarely if ever talk about computers, other than all the cool things she's doing with her Corel paint program.

Where the PC got in her way all the time, the Mac is just a tool for her to do her work, like a pencil or paintbrush. She loves it, while her PC experience did little more than aggravate her and make it difficult to get her work done.

The sea change is apparent but Microsoft has such a commanding lead in market share that it will still be years before Apple can ever catch up, even if Microsoft stays flat and Apple continues to increase Mac shipments 50% each year.

Still, Apple is in a nice position and their shareholders are in for a rocket ride. Even if the Mac sales level off, you still have iPods, iPhones and other Apple gadgets on the way.

Mr G’s only hesitation was that all his audio programs are designed to run on windows. However, he made the mistake of telling me he could run both at once on the mac and I quit listening to anything else and made him get it. I was tired of having him be an IT guy instead of a music business guy.

8-)

Apple's profit and revenue surged

Hmm... don't hear anyone stating that Apple is making too much profit on overpriced I-pods and that their profits should be taxed and the execs need to testify before congress... /sarc

Bought mine about 5 months ago and have had one crash. Considering all the strange software I run and a lot of old versions I’ve installed from my win98 days that I still use, I’m happy with that.

BTW, one of the first things I did was rip out Norton - I suspect it puts a lot of hooks in where Vista dosen’t like them and fights for control.

Microsoft says 140M Vista licenses sold

April 24, 2008 (Computerworld) Microsoft Corp. said Thursday that it has sold 140 million licenses of Windows Vista.

Colleen Healy, general manager of investor relations, made the statement during a conference call with Wall Street after posting its third-quarter earnings. The company pointed to strong PC sales for helping the much-maligned operating system achieve that number.

In its last update in January, Microsoft said it had sold 100 million licenses for Vista since the operating system’s launch in November 2006.

Healy did not offer details. But if she was being consistent with past Microsoft statements, the 140 million license figure excludes volume licenses sold to corporations. Volume licenses give corporations the right to use whatever version of Windows they want.

... and Apple TV as it looks like they are going into the home entertainment thing as well. I buy a movie or TV show several times a week on iTunes.

Also, Apple is planning on a retail sales push. You may have noticed Starbucks just switched to AT&T from T-Mobile to power wi-fi in their stores. And AT&T is the carrier for iPhones and iTouch.

Apple and Starbucks are planning on people being able to order and purchase their drinks without standing in line ... just go pick it up when you come in the door. This after you have neatly ordered and paid on your iTouch or iPhone.

Also, AT&T wi-fi is also available free for 2 hours a day with your Starbucks card.

Yep, Microsoft peaked at the Internet Bubble and hasn’t done much since.

140 million is mostly due to Windows momentum, as for about 90% of people if you buy a computer you end up with Windows, and thus Vista by default. And from what I've heard corporate uptake of Vista isn't going well. Most prefer to stay with XP.

I hope the next version of Windows is much better. We can only rely on Jobs' energy to come up with better ideas to produce an OS for so long. We need real technical competition.
