Last night I watched on cable for the first time, The Lost City. It was directed by and starred Andy Garcia. This movie was about a nightclub owner at the time prior and after the takeover of Cuba by Fidel Castro. It was the most realistic portrayal of the Fidelistas I have ever seen and therefore one of the best, if not THE best anti-communist movie ever made which is why it was shunned by Hollyweird.
Despite the rarity of anti-communist movies from Hollywood, there have been a few. Which of these anti-communist movies do you think is the best? Some of these movies were so campy, such as My Son John as to be FUnnie. Others, like Big Jim McLain starring John Wayne were just okay although there was one great scene where Wayne's VO talks about the James Arness character who was killed by communist thugs in Hawaii. Dr. Zhivago was more of a romantic flick than political although it did have some interesting portrayals of the Bolsheviks. Red Dawn was a good action flick but it was a bit too comic book to be a great anti-communist movie.
So I'll toss it out to you folks. Which film do you think was the BEST anti-communist movie ever made?
October 2007 lecture at Cambridge University in England. Science, math, and history are used to conclusively demonstrate that man-made CO2 is not responsible for climate change. Points out numerous errors in Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" movie and in the UN IPCC reports. Associating CO2 with climate change is having disastrous effects on energy supplies and economies. This video describes the unethical and fraudulent behavior of the warming proponents.
The Call of the Entrepreneur tells the stories of three entrepreneurs: A failing dairy farmer in rural Evart, Michigan; A merchant banker in New York City; A refugee from Communist China. Why do their stories matter? Because how we view entrepreneurs-as greedy or altruistic, as virtuous or vicious - shapes the destinies of individuals and nations. The stories restore faith in entrepreneurs ability to build lives, strengthen nations and economies as well as fulfill God-given destinies. The film rejects the myth that capitalists are self serving, arguing rather that they are almost wholly devoted to others. I found this film to be a welcome proclamation of how our lives are enriched through the human intellect and spirit.
Originally produced by PBS. Describes conflicts between moderate and extremist Muslims in Amsterdam, Denmark; Saudi Arabia; Toronto, Canada; Chicago and Phoenix, U.S.; Paris, France. Undercover filming of extremist imans by moderate Muslims illustrates the danger posed by Jihadists to western society and moderate Muslims. Educational and eye-opening. YouTube trailer DVD Site
Realistic and even-handed portrayal of FBI counterterrorism squad dispatched to Saudi Arabia to find the terrorists that killed 120 Americans in a horrific bombing. The U.S. agents include Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner ("Alias"). With their investigation hampered by local bureaucracy, the team realizes they may be the terrorists' next target. Some action sequences are very intense. This is the most realistic portrayal of the enemy we face that I have seen Hollywood produce since 9-11-2001. IMDB listing.
Years after fleeing the Taliban and immigrating to the United States, an Afghan man returns to his war-ravaged homeland to try to repay his debt to a childhood friend whose trust he betrayed. Marc Forster directs this touching story of family, friendship and bravery, based on the best-selling novel by Khaled Hosseini. Poignant and dramatic portrayal of life from the perspective of one Afghan family before (1978) and after (1998) the Taliban took over the country and ruined it. Very well done. IMDB listing.
Set in 1984 East Berlin. Provides an exquisitely nuanced portrait of life under the watchful eye of the state police as a high-profile couple is bugged. When a successful playwright and his actress companion become subjects of the Stasi's secret surveillance program, their friends, family and even those doing the watching find their lives changed too. Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. German with English subtitles. Very well done. Top 10 film of 2007 on many lists. IMDB listing.
The Unit focuses on a top-secret military unit modeled after the real life Delta Force (Army Special Forces). The program features both the domestic lives of the team members and their missions abroad, in addition to the effect their careers have on their home lives, wives and girlfriends. Episodes 7 and 8 from Season 3 were especially appropriate for Memorial Day 2008 as I remembered the ultimate sacrifice made by many in our Armed Forces.

Another vote for The Lives of Others.
Great movie - one of my all-time favorites.
That is the ENGLISH LANGUAGE version. The German version came out in ‘06.
“Grapes of Wrath” was pinko propaganda, while “Our Daily Bread” was out and out RED. Don’t get me started on “The Day the Earth Stood Still.”
Sure wasn't the Searchers, that's for sure...
Grapes of Wrath reminds me in a way of Birth of a Nation-fantastic filmaking but obnoxious messages in both movies.
Same here. I even have a son named Sam, but I was able to talk hubby into the name without mentioning the movie.
Eleni.
Kate Nelligan and John Malkovich will both make you cry.
And it is a true story about a little known war.
Expertly done by a truly underrated director--Franklin J. Schaffner.
The second time I saw that film I noticed that Kerensky was portrayed less sympathetically than I first thought. He seemed too arrogant in talking to the Czar and unable to inspire and organize the loyal battalions that he needed.
My favorite was ‘Firefox’ with Clint Eastwood.
Animal Farm came to my mind too. I wonder if High Schools still show it to their students or if the teacher’s unions have banned it.
Watched “The Lives of Others” this weekend. Awesome movie. Can’t recommend it highly enough.
Joke from the movie...
It’s sunrise and Erich Honneker looks up at the sky and says “Good morning, sun”. And the sun replies “Good morning, Erich”.
It’s noon and same drill. “Good day Sun”. Sun goes, “Good day, Erich”.
It gets to be late in the day and Erich says “Good evening, sun”.
No response.
Honneker says “What’s up with that, why no response?”
Sun replies “Screw you, I’m in the West now”.
