Record stock market drop at open today

Posted on 01/22/2008 2:52:06 AM PST by Degaston

Go look at any money website to see the evidence. The Dow Jones futures are down over 500 points from Friday's close. Europe fell 6-7% on Monday and is barely holding even this morning. Asia fared worse. Its not the end of the world. Its just a bear market. Just make sure you are ready to handle this downturn.

I hope I don’t get laid off and have to dip into my 401K, because it has lost 20% of its value in the last couple months.

I’ll buy into a declining market. Sure, I might take a hit in the short term, but I’m not smart enough to predict the future. I just keep buying. From what I understand, the mortgage “crisis” is a very small percent of the total market, and the economy is humming along reasonably well. Stock market panic aside, I always love shopping in the bargain bins. Somehow I don’t think Walmart, GE, or others are going belly up. Either way, I intend to ride it out. I’m in it for the long term.

Europe is keeping its cool (unlike Asia). I see some sanity out there.

And if you are really buying into this market, when will you pull the trigger?

Sir Francis: “Walmart has all that crap from China to sell.”

Well, everything from China isn’t crap, but a lot of it is. Nevertheless, WalMart is doing far more to help lower income earners than the government. Why shouldn’t I profit from their success? Am I supposed to singlehandedly fix the American economy or intentionally take losses to make a political point? It’s not my fault Americans like hamstringing our own industries with confiscatory tax rates and ever increasing government regulation.

Media driven recession, investors who get stuck thinking they must sell and take a loss today are set to learn a lesson the hard way, make sure your investing in quality, and don’t trust the Democrat Majority Press. Low markets are good for us ‘dollar cost average’ investors in early to mid working careers, lowering our average.

"Low markets are good for us ‘dollar cost average’ investors in early to mid working careers, lowering our average."

Also good for us DRIPers!

I got some DRIPs right now paying mean 18-25% Divies. Its hard to be sad with those kinds of numbers. Of course if the stock collapses like NFI did then divies mean squat.

On CNBC this morning, Rick Santelli said people may find out their 401K is really a 301K after today. Modern digital trading magnifies every move of the markets globally, and traders finally had to admit in Asia that their stock markets still depend on the US economy.
Some of our young stock “experts,” such as Jonathan Honig, a Fox business contributor, actually believed that world economies were not affected by ours, a foolish assumption that cost him plenty the past 48 hours.

““Walmart has all that crap from China to sell.””

I happen to like Walmart and all these stupid cracks about Chinese junk get old.
Walmart sells the same goods and brands that any other big box store sells.
It is not their fault if many products are no longer available
from US suppliers.
My last shopping in Walmart included clothing from numerous countries, as well as Black and Decker tools, American brand
light bulbs, American groceries, and American sporting goods.

Actually it is partly their fault, due to their insatiable insistence that their suppliers cut past the bone in order to lower costs.

And the morons in management of the suppliers thought, "We can't possibly lose the volume and exposure Wal-Mart will give us."

Fortunately, a few suppliers have bucked the trend for awhile.

Cheers!

I like Walmart, too. That quote, “Walmart has all that crap from China to sell,” wasn’t mine.

Seems to me that at one time Sears made it a point of going to American producers and giving them off-peak business by having them make their goods with the Sears meatball on them. I remember reading how well this worked for both parties. Wonder what happened to that plan.
