Glenn Beck health problem?

Posted on 01/04/2008 10:26:04 AM PST by redlocks322

Does anyone know what happened to Glenn? I saw some of his you tube video and he looks horrible. Just guessing but from the little big I heard it sounded like the hospital gave him the wrong medicine or something after surgery...

A doctor tried this patch with me after breaking my back in a car accident.

What a horrible doctor! :-)

Hope you're feeling well now.

‘I like Glenn, but he is a bit of a drama king.’

I find him grating, and yep, given to emotional rants that are absurd in the extreme.

Glenn may be *faking* to get attention to an issue he wants to talk about. The fact that there is no news on it probably means it’s not as bad as he makes it to be.

Besides if he’s as bad off as he thinks he is...how on earth can he return to his show on Monday? Family first...work 2nd (especially with someone with enough money to support the family without working anymore).

Adding some to the discussion. From my experience, I know that alcoholics react
differently to certain medications than most people.

Glen is very open that he is a recovered alcoholic. Quite possibly he
reacted in some wierd way to the surgery.

Prays are up that Glen have a speedy recovery and that he stays close to his support
system — his friends who understand him and alcoholism.

My worse fear for Glen is that he forgets who/what he is. FOrgets his right size. It’s
difficult for recovered alkies to get public attention and accolades. Most
fall back into their old ways of self-interest, self-medication, etc. etc.

Glen, my friend, if you read this, stay on the beam!

He said it was a Fentanyl Patch.

Proper Use of Fentanyl Pain Patches
By Michelle Meadows

Fentanyl skin patches provide convenient and effective relief for many people who experience chronic pain, and who have been taking pain medications for long periods of time. But health care providers and patients should be aware that deaths and other serious problems have resulted from accidental overdoses related to inappropriate use of the fentanyl patch, the Food and Drug Administration says.

The patch is applied to the skin and delivers fentanyl, a potent, strong opiate analgesic. The drug is slowly absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream and can relieve pain for up to three days from a single patch application.

“After applying the first patch, it can take 12 to 18 hours to reach the peak of pain relief, with some early pain relief occurring at four to six hours after the first administration,” says Donald R. Stanski, M.D., a professor of anesthesia at Stanford University who was involved with the clinical drug development of the first fentanyl patch in the 1980s.

The most frequent use of the fentanyl patch has been to treat pain in people with cancer, and it is only appropriate for patients who have developed a degree of tolerance to the opiate analgesic effects because they have been previously using this type of drug, says Robert J. Meyer, M.D., director of the Office of Drug Evaluation II in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

Glenn has made no secret about back problems he has had. He even talks about it when selling that inflatable bed. If he had some sort of back surgery that went wrong, I can personally vouch for the extreme amount of pain that can be caused, especially during the healing process.

Wow... I just watched the video on his site:
“Beck from the Dead” - http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/3434/

It sounds like he went through a total nightmare. I’ll try to remember to listen to his show on Monday because it sounds like he has gotten a glimpse at what the world would be like under a gov’t run healthcare system. He alluded to the fact that this is the way our soldiers are being treated. I’m assuming that he went to a VA hospital???

OMG!! My mom was rushed to the hospital yesterday and it looks like the same thing. She had been on the Fentanyl patch because of cancer and several times she has gone unresponsive and her blood pressure plummeted. I told my sis yesterday to take the patch off of her(not the first time we have done that). The nurses at the hospital apparently told her she didn’t have to do it....blah, blah, blah....but she did anyway. When her Doctor got there, she said they were taking Mom off the patch.

Interesting. I wonder if there are some bad batches of this patch out on the market, because sometimes Mom would tolerate it fine and then after I came back home for the holidays, she started having problems.

Thanks for posting this. Calling my sis ASAP!!

I try to listen online when I'm home, but usually I am out in the field and have to rely on radio stations. Our local station "geniuses" decided to bury the show from 9:00 pm to midnight (they are the same geniuses who cut out about a half hour of Rush's show right at the beginning of the second hour so they can do extra local news and Paul Harvey), and KFAB is the only other station I know of within listening range that carries it. Very frustrating.

Thanks for the link. I'll bookmark it in case I need it sometime.

Waiting for Monday to find out. Email from him the other day sounded like it was humorous in a schedenfreude sort of way and Glenn was going to tell us all about it.

I’m betting it was an injury accident that required hospital, but then it just got worse from there because of the hospital.

In the video I watched he said that his doctor told him he was getting a combination of “everything they had for pain”, and that it put him in a very dark place. He admitted that by Thursday he was totally suicidal. He has decided NOT to take those drugs anymore and is trying to recover without them... I wouldn’t wish that on ANYONE, and I wish him the best of luck. Pain meds can be scary things, especially if one is prone to problems as it sounds Mr. Beck may be.

It really doesn’t sound like he is exaggerating when he talks about the state he was in due to the meds, although I will freely admit that I’m not familiar with his “style”... When he speaks about how his wife “turned him around” from his suicidal thoughts, and that she saved his soul yet again, I’m inclined to believe him. It looked like he was fighting back tears, frankly...

Well, regardless, he and his family have my prayers and wishes for a quick recovery. My husband had back surgery last June, and it’s no fun at all.

Your welcome.

It sounds to me like Glenn went in for a scheduled surgery and a horrible nurse was assigned to him.
