Appalachian State rolls over Delaware for third straight title Chattanooga, TN (Sports Network) - Armanti Edwards threw for three touchdowns, and Appalachian State captured its unprecedented third straight national crown by routing Delaware, 49-21, in the Football Championship Subdivision title contest.

The Mountaineers (13-2), who pulled off a shocker by beating Big Ten powerhouse Michigan on the road in their season opener, and won the Southern Conference, culminated the season with their 12th consecutive playoff victory.

ASU became the first Division I squad since Army in 1946 to win three national championships in a row.

The Mountaineers are undefeated in all three trips to the national championship game. The Mountaineers topped Northern Iowa, 21-16, in 2005 and defeated Massachusetts, 28-17, last year.

Joe Flacco threw for one score for Delaware (11-4), which was trying for its seventh national title.

Appalachian State's shocking win over Michigan was essentially a preview of the shockingly wild state of college football this year at the Football Bowl Subdivision (Division 1-A) level.

IAA (I refuse the new names) can do it, but the big boys in IA can't manage a play-off because; 1). it will hurt the students class time 2). it will hurt the traditional bowls 3). it will hurt the regular season 4). too much money will be lost

For supposed places of higher education, these are the dumbest arguments I have ever heard. We need a play-off. We need to know who the real national champion is!

The BCS is a joke. It is done in other divisions and can be done in 1A.

Three cheers for Appalachian State. Would be bad taste for me to buy my U of Michigan brother-in-law an App. St. t-shirt for Christmas? LOL!

How do colleges move up a level in sports? Appalachian State truly should move up to the highest level in college football IMHO.

The BCS is a joke. It is done in other divisions and can be done in 1A.

It's done because it's done for the atheletes, and because almost no one cares about the games. In 1A football, hundreds of thousands of people go on vacation for the exhibition games, generally in nice, sunny places. The Bowl games aren't really championship games at all, and they don't belong to the NCAA.

That'd likely make a mess of any other sports programs they have. As an example, the University of Dayton has a fair tradition of Div I basketball. Because of that and NCAA rule changes, their Div. III football team had to move up to Div I, where it doesn't have athletic scholarships.

I understand. The 1AA playoff system considers the well being of the student athletes first because little money is involved but in 1A the money takes precedence over the student athlete because of the large sums involved. That reasoning only makes the BCS more of a joke.

Ummm. No. It's not the well being of the athelete that's considered. It's that they can run a playoff system because virtually no one cares about the games, thus holding games in out of the way places for several weeks in a row makes no real difference regarding attendance. Since there's little attendance, setting the format to meet the needs of the athletes while discounting the fans works.

The BCS is at best a compromise overlaid upon a collection of exhibition games - exhibition games which are set up by local organizations which have little interest in what anyone else is doing except regarding competition for their event.

A championship isn't "fixing" the BCS...it's doing something entirely different.

Exactly. The BCS needs to be replaced with a playoff system.

Oh, I thought they beat Michigan again, judging from the opponent’s helmets.

The Univ of Alaska has no football program and therefore does not exist. Got some serious hockey this year, but without football it can’t be an actual institution of higher education.

I think it would be great if college football worked like the English Premiership in soccer.

If you suck, you get relegated to a lower division the next season, and the best teams from the lower levels get promoted up a level each year.

I would love if they could really do that in all of the college sports.
