Former Windows Users Offer Tales Of Why They Switched to a Mac

Last week's column on pondering a new PC, and the possibility of throwing over Windows for Apple, brought in a tidal wave of forum posts and email -- and more evidence that the consumer-PC market is turning in Apple's favor.

Email after email came from people who had recently switched from Windows to Macs, or were planning to do so once OS X 10.5 -- Leopard -- comes out next month. (By the way, why don't all operating-system makers just stick with the working names? They're always cooler.) And many of those emails came from people who were longtime, dedicated Windows users, including engineering types who had resisted what they saw as Apple hype. (Another theme that emerged from my correspondence: Vista was the final straw for a number of Windows users. Microsoft has a problem on its hands there.)

We bought at iMac 2 weeks ago and absolutely love it. My laptop needed to be replaced and I went to Best Buy. After comparing the PC’s with Vista and the Mac ( and lots of research online) we decided on the Mac. My kids love the Photobooth feature.

The only program I can’t run is Quickbooks, but I have my old laptop for that.

Yup, me too. Was a closet Unix geek for years, whilst my workplace required that I use Windows.

I retired several years back. Ordered up a Mac. Haven’t looked back since, although I’ve kept an XP box in the house for “just in case”. Just upgraded to Intel based Macs, and have trashed the legacy XP box.

Was going to load Windows and Parallels on the newest OS X box, but found a reasonable Mac app that made the sole remaining Windows app redundant. I’ll probably order the Office for Mac ‘08 app when it ships, primarily for continuity, but that will be it. Bye bye, Mr Gates. It was real, but it wasn’t much fun . . . .

I switched to an Apple laptop last month after 20 years on PCs.

Still have some ‘learning curve’ to go thru but its such a relief to leave windows behind.

"The only program I can’t run is Quickbooks,"

Ummm, Why not?

QB for Mac even intergrates with all of Apple's apps, like iCal.

I asked at the Apple store and the associate said that there have been some complaints about the ability to process certain functions with the Mac. It’s more of an Intuit issue than a Mac issue. Besides, I don’t feel like speding so much on another license when I already have one.

I’m not a big fan of Quickbooks for Mac. Even version 2007 is feature scarce compared to the Windows version. Plus, it is among the least intuitive interfaces on what is indubitably an office necessity. Sometimes, I think accountants like to keep accounting software as difficult to use in order to justify their jobs. MYOB AccountEdge is no better in terms of interface, but in terms of functionality, I find AccountEdge to be more feature complete than Quickbooks.

But, I’m still waiting for the first truly Made for Mac, business accounting package... and I’ll probably be waiting until Apple gets tired of waiting for someone else to do it right and just do it themselves.

24 inch - the monitor??? That's a big screen! Up until late last year the biggest TV we'd ever owned was a 27".

Quickbooks Pro 2007 for Mac on Amazon

I'd also look at:

Mind Your Own Business AccountEdge

It still has built in Payroll...

I am a QuickBooks Pro Advisor. The Mac version does not have all the functionality of the Windows version, making it unacceptable for many business applications. I got a cheapy XP machine just to run Intuit products and Microsoft Access, programs I need to support my client base. I’ve made the switch to Mac for everything else. Intuit doesn’t seem to get it yet, that so many people are making the switch. When the new version of QuickBooks comes out next month, a new Mac version will not be included. I am hoping they are going to go with a more robust version of the Mac version and that is the reason for the delay.

Bookwoman, I’m not a fan of Intuit apps in general anyway. Thanks for the details about the limitiations of QBP for the Mac.

One nice thing is that with the proliferation of broadband, full-feautred hosted accounting apps are now a very viable option for any platform....Windows, Mac, Linux, whatever.

I hear it runs well on Parallels in Coherence mode... or try VMWare... you can lose the cheapt XP machine.

Do you happen to know an easy way to convert my Outlook files to iMail? The waiting period to go to the Apple store is 3 days and Apple support couldn’t help either. All of my other files I was able to transfer off of a flash drive, but I couldn’t figure out the Outlook files.
