(Tech Question) Weird Wireless Problem

Posted on 07/24/2007 7:19:57 PM PDT by RangerM

I've tried every "Google" search I can think of and still can't find a solution.

Any network gurus, can I have your attention?

I have a Zyxel P-330W router (wireless-capable), and am trying to connect my laptop wirelessly. I am using a Linksys Wireless-G USB adapter.

I have no trouble whatsoever connecting and surfing the web. My problem occurs when I attempt to connect to my bank, or post a topic to a forum, like Freerepublic.com

When I disconnect my wireless adapter, and connect my laptop via ethernet to the SAME ROUTER, I have no trouble, and am able to do everything that I want.

At work, I have no trouble using the wireless connection to do the aformentioned things, although the access point is a linksys model.

I am left with what to do with the Zyxel. Whether I enable or disable WEP/WPA makes no difference.

When I attempt to login to my bank, or post to a forum, IE just sits there, and the progress bar may count off a couple of clicks, but ultimately the IE window just pops up with something to the effect of "unable to make connection" and "click here to diagnose the internet connection". When I do this, it says there is no problem with my connection, and I am stumped.

Any ideas?

I have similar problem on a new PC I built, but only once Vista was installed. The wireless adapter works fine, but the Vista supported NIC downloads files so slow it gives up. Web surfing is fine with the NIC.

I haven't gotten around to fixing it yet.

This sounds like you may have a firewall setting...some routers have different firewall settings for ethernet and wireless...

Try disabling your firewall on wireless, or compare the settings for ethernet and wireless....

Wife had almost the same problem. The DSL provider tech rep solved the problem.

Had the same exact problem. Don’t let Linksys (same as mine) find the signal. Allow Microsoft to find the signal (you have the option.) Re install the Linksys, but default to Microsoft...it worked for me..

Unfortunately that didn’t fix the problem

I turned off the “Linksys Monitor” and defaulted to “Windows Wireless Zero Configuration” mode, and I get the same results.

Thanks though.

Not sure what the problem is/was, but I did a “firmware upgrade” and that seems to solve the problem.

My old version was 1.4. The new version is 1.8.

I get nervous when I do these type of operations. The last time I tried to “flash” upgrade, I screwed up my bios and had to get a new motherboard.

Logging into forums wasn’t the problem. Posting to them was.

Although logging into my bank’s website could not be done.

After that firmware update (see 2 posts up), the problem disappeared, but I still don’t know why.

I didn’t see in the update info anything describing a problem remotely like mine. Oh well, I guess I should just be happy it’s been resolved.

Allow Microsoft to find the signal

My first thought as well. Reinstall but choose the option to Let Windows Configure My Wireless Connection.
