GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- A Georgia mother said she wants answers and action after she and her baby were kicked off a plane.
Kate Penland said she was glad to board the plane in Houston to visit her father in Oklahoma after an 11-hour delay. But she said a rude and aggressive flight attendant caused her to get to Oklahoma a day late.
Penland thinks her 19-month-old son, Garren, has a bubbly personality. But Penland said when they were aboard a Continental Express plane, a flight attendant became annoyed by Garren's personality when he kept saying three words.
"As we started taxiing, he started saying, 'Bye, bye plane,'" said Penland. "At the end of her speech, she leaned over the gentleman beside me and said, 'It's not funny anymore. You need to shut your baby up.'"
In disbelief, Penland asked the woman if she was kidding. It was then, Penland said, the flight attendant went too far.
"She then said, 'You know, it's called baby Benadryl.' And I said, 'Well, I'm not going to drug my child so you have a pleasant flight,'" Penland said.
Penland said when the other passengers began speaking up on her behalf, the flight attendant got angrier and soon announced they were turning around and that Penland and Garren were going to be taken off the plane.
"I was crying, I was upset and I was thinking, 'What am I going to do? I don't have anything with me. I don't have any more diapers for the baby, no juice, no milk," said Penland.
The mother said she later learned the flight attendant told the pilot that she had threatened her. Penland said that never happened.
Express Jet Airlines released a statement that said, "We received Ms. Penland's letter expressing her concerns and intend to investigate its contents."
A fellow passenger told Atlanta TV station WSB that none of the other passengers had problems with Garren and that Penland never threatened the flight attendant. Penland said she is considering legal action.
IF you realized what an overreaction you just posted, and you’re ignorance to my identity, you’d pipe down.
I’ll let it pass this time. Every one gets a do over once.
You’re not seeing my point. This child saying “bye, bye, plane” is not a learning experience.
I have no where to put it.
Sure, physically it's easy. It's the kids mouth and volume control thats hard to control for an extended period of time.
This was a baby or toddler saying, “Bye, bye, plane,” over and over again. A gentle “shush” might be in order on a plane, but not heavy discipline for that.
You're one sick puppy.
If the story happened anything like it was reported in the article, the flight attendant was way out of line and should be reprimanded. If you have children, I doubt you would be very receptive (even if your child were behaving very badly) if someone leaned into your face and said “It’s not funny anymore, you need to shut your baby up.” Regardless of how somebody else is acting I would hope that I never respond with such rudeness.
The pediatrician suggested that to my parents for my brother who wasn’t sleeping.
a couple of drops for the baby and a shot for the parents
Tardive Dyskinesia can exhibit the same symptoms. You assume that poor little kid is perfectly healthy at your own risk.
And proud of it if it means taking responsibility for my child’s behavior.
Well, you could pull it out of its wrapper, pour in some bottled Perrier water and swing it back and forth like a pendulum to lull the baby into a trancelike state.
LOL! I’m a big guy, and at least with a insane muzzie I would not feel guilty beating the snot out of him if he tried to do something stupid.
My mother did that with my brother. She also used it when he was teething. It worked pretty well too. If she did it now she’d be in trouble with child services. I know from flying many children get ear problems. I always gave mine gum to chew when they were old enough. I never had a problem with my children on planes thankfully. I find drunken adults more annoying then the children. I don’t fly anymore if I can drive.
Very true, having 3 myself it sure changed my viewpoint on kids and bad parents.
>>You got dirty looks for removing a screaming kid?
I would applaud you for doing that!<<
Actually, I did. My younger daughter would start into the two year old temper tantrums like no other. I knew when we got to the Point of no return. Some whining is okay, once the whining turned into crying, it was going to turn to tantrum and I was outta there.
I can remember one time at a grocery store, literally running with my four year old in tow and the two year old slung over my shoulder. Two old ladies were shaking their heads and ticking at me.
But I knew I was right. And no way was I going to let their stupidity stop me from doing what I needed to do. It is my God given job to discipline my kids. Sorry if anyone has a problem with it.
When I see moms like this, I try to give a sympathetic smile. Been there, done that.
I’m sorry you’re getting such abuse strewn at you on this thread. You are handling it with extreme class.
