Windows Vista suffers from a bug that causes many machines to stall while deleting, copying and moving files, a flaw that has provoked consternation in online forums.
"I've seen this bug in action, and trust me, it's as if you're copying over a 64k link using only 256mb of RAM," one Reg reader complained. "To add to the problem, you can't cancel or anything."
According to a thread on Microsoft's TechNet site, Microsoft has issued a hotfix for the problem, but it has failed to quell the outrage. For one thing, individual users must get Microsoft's approval before the fix can be downloaded, according to our tipster. And for another, hotfixes are more of a pain to install than patches.
We've contacted a Microsoft spokeswoman, who promised to see if a patch for the problem (is) in the works. Meanwhile, Vista users continue to grumble.
"I simply can not believe that I updated to a new computer and put windows Vista on it to find that it's not even capable of moving and deleting files in an efficient manner," one disaffected user posted in the Microsoft forum. "Microsoft must be kidding! The most basic of features that I use all the time is a slow train wreck." ®
On this thread one poster already mentioned that his campus won't support the new Vista OS and Office '07. Sounds like his campus and my campus are having similar problems. Too many bugs. Our tech support team is telling people to stick with XP. All the complaints that I have mentioned come from people that have personally told me of their own personal problems with the new OS.
What is it that the rest of us are doing wrong that folks like you are doing so right, anyway?
I made the switch to Mac. You know, the OS that Bill Gates stole most of his ideas from for his new OS.
I am glad you switched, though. Sounds like you needed to.
That's right. There's no better way to avoid all the hassles with the new Vista OS. A lot of other people are joining me.
Sounds like to me they don't know what they're doing...and on and on and on. When they have time to sit down, read a little, learn a little - the support will follow.
Our tech support team is telling people to stick with XP.
Gee - I wonder if they told people to stick to earlier versions of Windows when XP rolled out...hmmmmmmm....

And I don't know anybody personally who's having problems with Vista.

LOL!!!! And who did Apple steal it from? Oh my aching sides!!! :-D

It's good that you and the rest have recognized your limitations. :-)
I imagine one would actually have to have friends in order to know someone who's having problems with Vista.
L
LOL!!
His campus tech support team and my campus tech support team know a lot more more about computers and OS's than you do. The problems stem from bugs inherent with the system.
Gee - I wonder if they told people to stick to earlier versions of Windows when XP rolled out...hmmmmmmm....
No, we were able to make the transition to XP with a minimum of issues. That's the whole point. Our team has mountains of experience with Windows operating systems : Win95, Win98, Win2000, and WinXP. They've never had these kind of issues before. It's the whole new anti-piracy safeguards that have effectively crippled the new OS. We have litany of software and and other applications that we're unable to install.
And I don't know anybody personally who's having problems with Vista.
Even you contradict yourself here. In post # 37 you say :
>Yeah - I've seen some of the posts from forum members on computer related threads.
Nearly all of the problems encountered are due to one thing.
We call it ID-10-T..
So you have encountered individuals (fellow Freepers) that are having problems with the new Vista OS. But of course you blame them rather than the bugs inherent within the system. How about I direct you to a Freeper that is having problems with their new Vista OS and you can tell them what they are doing wrong...? Put up or shut up.
LOL!!!! And who did Apple steal it from? Oh my aching sides!!! :-D
Xerox had the GUI but it was Apple that refined it and actually built a viable computer OS around it that anyone could use. If it wasn't for that the Xerox techs would probably still be experimenting with it. And of course Bill Gates would have never come out with Windows. MS users would still be using DOS. Ha ha. OS X is basically derived from UNIX but, again, Apple turned it into a simple, user friendly OS that anyone can use ( not just computer techs ). Without Apple's OS X there would have never been Vista (the bastard child). And without the iPod there would have never been Zune.
It's good that you and the rest have recognized your limitations. :-)
Actually it's the new users of Vista that are encountering limitations and realize that they probably would've been better off sticking with XP...
Anything you say.
It's the whole new anti-piracy safeguards that have effectively crippled the new OS.
Sure...and yet my copy isn't "crippled" in the least. Runs super...how did I luck out...lol...;-)
In post # 37 you say :
I said no such thing in post #37..I believe you were talking in #37...
So you have encountered individuals (fellow Freepers) that are having problems with the new Vista OS.
Nope.
Put up or shut up.
Let them figure it out. I used to do that here until I was constantly getting pinged to every friggin' computer thread on FR. I quit helping after a while. There's something to be said for figuring out your own problems..
Xerox had the GUI but it was Apple that refined it...
Xerox had the GUI but it was Apple that refined stole it...(fixed it for ya ;-))...

You'd think with all the earth-shattering, ground-breaking technology that Apple is responsible for they'd have a stratospheric market-share..at least they have the iPod locked up. For now. Until MS "steals" that from 'em, too...(lol/snort)
Actually it's the new users of Vista that are encountering limitations and realize that they probably would've been better off sticking with XP...
Not me..glad I made the switch. Absolutely fantastic.
Cheers!
lol - Just as much as Jobs is paying the Mac-ainiacs..cheers back at ya! ;-)
Please provide the evidence to back up your slander, Tom. It may help you to know that purchasing something is not theft.
Well we would have to compare and contrast your experience to others that are experiencing problems with the new OS. But you refuse to admit that that there are any bugs inherent within the system.
I said no such thing in post #37..I believe you were talking in #37...
My mistake, post # 38. The very next post. Nice way of avoiding the issue. In post 38 you say ( with regards to Freepers' problems with the new Vista ) :
>Yeah - I've seen some of the posts from forum members on computer related threads.
Nearly all of the problems encountered are due to one thing.
We call it ID-10-T..
So again, you have come across Freepers that are experiencing problems with Vista. All I asked was if you could help a single person that was experiencing problems with the new OS and you declined. What a cop out. ;>)
Xerox had the GUI but it was Apple that refined stole it...(fixed it for ya ;-))...
Wrong again. Apple actually made an arrangement with Xerox to allow their engineers to come into PARC to study and analyze the GUI with the understanding that they would use what they learned to develop their own GUI for their own computers. Xerox was paid for all of this in Apple stock. Years later Xerox tried to sue Apple for "stealing" their idea but the suit was dismissed. There were also significant differences between Xerox's SmallTalk and the Mac OS.
You'd think with all the earth-shattering, ground-breaking technology that Apple is responsible for they'd have a stratospheric market-share..at least they have the iPod locked up. For now. Until MS "steals" that from 'em, too...(lol/snort)
Most of it is logistics. Apple oversees the construction of all of its computers and the majority of its other hardware. This makes for better overall quality with regards to the products. Actually if you look at Microsoft's market share and compare it with Apple's you'll see that Microsoft should be making far, far greater revenue than it is currently making. Apple is doing something right. And no, they do not overcharge for their products. Their computers are competitively priced with comparatively equipped PC's.
And actually a couple of my friends have been having problems trying successfully sync their MP3 players with their new Vista OS's. So I wouldn't worry about Microsoft overtaking Apple in the MP3 market.
Left the computer on over the weekend and it was, of course, locked up with 100% CPU. This time it said the culprit was Norton Anti-virus which ran on Friday night. I shut that down, but my CPU never freed back up. Did a ctrl-alt-del, it stalled so I came back an hour later and it said Windows Explorer was the problem. I just rebooted to free the RAM and has been running fine all day. Still have to get rid of prefetch for msmsgs.exe but was sick over the weekend.
p.s. Have that little green box running in my System Tray so I can click it, otherwise everything else takes forever when 100% CPU is jammed up.
BTW, what is the difference between the old Ctrl-Alt-Del and Ctrl-Shift-Esc? Never heard of that one before.
