Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said Thursday that Wall Street's current expectations for revenue from its newest operating system may be too "optimistic."
"I'm really excited about how enthusiastic people are about Vista, but I think some of the revenue forecasts for Vista in 2008 are overly aggressive," Ballmer said in a meeting for financial analysts. "(Vista) is primarily a chance to sustain what (Windows) revenue we have -- not every release is a revenue growing opportunity.". . .
Ballmer also responded to a question about a series of commercials made by smaller computer maker Apple Inc.. . .
"I'll give Apple credit for what it's done," Ballmer said. It's not like they've really grown a lot of market share (through the commercials). Remember, when you're the little tiny niche guy who owns about 2 percent of the worldwide (computer) market, you can be cute one time and it helps you grow."

I would, selling software is pure profit... leave it up the marketing department for the "new spin", they could have the "PC guy" lose some weight and dress up in some nicer clothes... ;)

You continue to fail to understand Apple's business model. The OS is a means to sell the hardware. The iTMS is a means to sell iPods.
One without the other simply does not work, in the context of their business plans and in their experience.
Then why do they make iTMS for windows?
Um, because that lets them sell more iPods?
well... lots more... PC's in the world... that would sell LOTS of OSX's... "pretty much total profit and at $120 or so a pop" ... now, those customers, MAY purchase a mac on their next machine or just get a PC with OSX again... but, you are still getting $ from them... where before you were getting nothing...
You do know that the development cost of OS X is much more than $120 per copy, right?
Apple would have to sell every copy of OS X for PC at a loss.
So you are proposing that Apple should make a loss on every sale, but make it up with volume?
And that's worked out *soooo* well that driver problems have been eliminated on Windows.... not.
I don't have any "driver" issues. I'm using Vista Ultimate and
my brother just bought a brand new 7.1 pixel Olympus camera I took some pictures and made a little movie, I plugged it in without installing ANY software, Vista recognized it, installed the drivers and asked me where i wanted to transfer the files... easy as pie.
huh? it's doesn't need "that" must "refinement" MOST of that has already been done for them VIA the hackers on the internet... obviously, they would use their own methods, but the model is already there, OSX already works on PC's... or didn;t you know that?
And now you personalize your insults. Way to go, big guy. Real smart. Try using some facts.
By the way, have you ever heard of "projection?" Ask you therapist about it.
One, by not looking like a piece of junk. Two, by having everything integrated into one essentially thick LCD monitor (yes, comes with monitor). Three, by having a superior OS as opposed to the injured Vista Home Premium. Four, by using the superior Core 2 Duo. Five, gigabit Ethernet. Six, a LOT more useful software. Seven, a high-end mouse. Eight, built-in camera with video conference software. Nine, Bluetooth. Ten, I don't know how much power it sucks, but it's probably a lot more than the 180W for a mid-range iMac (including monitor). BTW, did you know you can wall-mount a 24" iMac with a standard VESA kit?
But what you posted isn't a bad deal if you just want a basic box with decent speed and storage.
That's not control. That's just an audit. There are third-party drivers for Mac hardware too.
I sign of things to come. I love my new 17" MacBook Pro I won't go back to Windows. The latest reviews of Vista prove that I made the right decision.
If you haven't read "Business at the Speed of Thought", it's a good read. Gates talks about the future of business, and also about his business philosophy. MS has always operated in a state of controlled paranoia.
I have to say, tweaking Mac users is pretty fun. And that's a fact. It's always fun to tweak a group that has no sense of humor about itself. Or just plain no sense of humor. PETA, Democratics, Mac users, Linux users etc. etc. All good fun.
The Mac is just a computer - and that's all we want it to be. It does what it's supposed to do, and it just works.
A Windows PC is more than a computer. It's a mind-numbing, virus-breeding, spam-spewing zombie colony.
It's not like it was something cool.
It's only as cool as it's user.
