Apple Special Event on February 20
Apple Recon ^ | 1/23/2007

Posted on 01/23/2007 9:36:21 PM PST by Swordmaker

We have just gotten an anonymous tip from a source that indicates that Apple is planning a special event on February 20 to introduce Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), iLife ‘07 and iWork ‘07 as well as updated Mac Pros. Mac Pros will be available immediately with a free upgrade to 10.5 when it ships, and the ship date for 10.5 will be confirmed for 3/24/07 as we have been predicting for quite some time now. There is some speculation that we may see a week earlier or later for this event, depending on the status of Leopard, but this is the most likely date which is being planned (by this time, Leopard’s new interface will be complete and the OS will be finishing up testing). What better way to demo Leopard than with a brand new 8-core Mac Pro?

Many will remember that last year, not long after Macworld, Apple had a special event on February 28, 2006, to introduce new Intel Mac Minis and iPod HiFi (see their PR archive here).

The real question on everyone’s mind, however, is…

will we see anything unexpected? Like an updated touchscreen iPod? Or perhaps a 12? ultra-portable Mac Book Pro? We continue to believe that it’s still going to be a little bit longer before we see either of those… NAB is coming up in April (the 14th-19th) and we’d peg updated Mac Book Pros at this event.

And then, dear Apple Recon Reader (ARR!! :), when will we see the full screen iPod and updated Mac Minis, iMacs, etc.? We don’t have any recon on that, so we’re not just going to make up something like some of the other guys would…if you have any ideas, sound off in the comments section below!

As always, a couple seconds out of your day to Digg us means a great deal to our humble site (more viewers = more exposure, more exposure = more sources, more sources = more recon), much appreciated!!

That's ridiculous... Steve Jobs is just going to announce that he's hired me to dispel anonymous rumors. ;-)

Nah, it sounds good. Apple has held events like this in February before, if I recall correctly, and they have usually been significant.

I wonder what happened to the old Apple Recon site? The guy just disappeared one day.

I have one question for Apple about the iPhone:

It runs OSX and has an Internet connection, but instead of having iTunes built in, you run iTunes on a separate computer, download your music, then plug the iPhone into the computer running iTunes and sync it?

That was an absolute no-brainer which would have made the iPhone really unique.

As it ends up, it is a clunky phone or a storage crippled iPod with a big screen. But it has a really cool interface.

It's more economical to use the PC for the primary storage location of music. Users can load music from the PC to the iPhone without incurring Cingular's data transfer charges. If a song was downloaded via Cingular network instead, that could significantly raise the cost of purchasing a song from the iTunes Store.

I agree with you about the storage limitations. Future generations of iPhone should increase the capacity. The 32GB or 64GB iPhone will be awesome.

Give them time... the limitation about directly connecting an iPod to the iTunes music store has probably more to do with the Music industry's requirements for DRM than what Apple wants. The Music Industry has just informed Microsoft that they want them to cripple the Squirting capability of WiFiing music from one Zune to another.

Finally Power Mac with two Xeon Processors, each containing two dual core processors. (The "Cloverton" Quad Cores are basically two "Woodcrests" stuck together sharing the same 1333 mhz frontside bus. I hope that Nvidea and AMD will update their Video cards.

Or perhaps a 12" ultra-portable Mac Book Pro?

The wife-unit would get one of those in a heartbeat.

Apple has dropped the "PowerMac" name in favor of "Mac Pro" for its top end Macintosh workstation class computers.

For clarity, the Mac Pro has been available with two Core 2 Duo Xeon's since its release several months ago. I think you are referring to the possible release of a Dual Quad Core Xeon Mac Pro for a total of 8 processors. Right?

How long do we have to wait until we can claim to be Apple "purists" with PPC-based units, and start flinging around thing like: "I'd get an Intel based Mac, but I'm not gay."?

= )

Hmm, I've been thinking about getting another MacBook. I'm not sure if I should wait.Typically I wait for the releases to mature. I would be very interested in iWeb 07. iWeb 06 is really a pretty basic tool.

I'm torn as well. My venerable PowerBook was stolen from the trunk of my car the Saturday before New Years Eve. The insurance company will buy me a brand new MacBook Pro for me and all I have to pay is my deductible... but I have to buy it and be reimbursed. I can buy it now (and I need a replacement) but rumor has it that Apple will be releasing LED back lit models soon... which means sometime in the next three to four months. Decisions, decisions...

Why couldn't that damn thief wait until the new models are out. Dagnabit.

This is a personal lifestyle choice. The exact timing is a balance between need and how crowded your closet is getting. Heat may also have a factor in your decision.

Mistyped. I meant Mac Pro.

Yep.
"Woodcrest" was the codename for the Xeon 51xx series of Core 2 based processors. The new "Clovertons" are eventually two low thermal designed Woodcrests coupled in a single chip.

Back in September a Mac Pro was "upgraded" with two pre-release "Clovertons" and the resulting 8-Core Mac Pro worked perfectly. http://anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2832&p=6

I hope that the upgrade is more than just the upgrade of CPUs.

So is this not happening? Seems like there would be a little more in the news about it by now, or on the Apple site.

Ah, the nature of rumors... and sometimes Apple let's one out to see if they can find out who's leaking. Haven't heard anything.
