I have rebooted, reformatted and I am signed on. LOL
I seem to have an issue with OmniPage 15 Pro. My system is XP-Pro, lots of memory, lots of hard-drive.
I had installed some time ago OmniPage and had some problems with it and uninstalled it. A few weeks ago I reinstalled it but I cannot get the Service Pack update to it. I get the following message:
"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that this patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."
I contacted OmniPage and was put through several do this and do that type of things but none worked. Then I was told to download a particular windows installer package. I did that and received the same message, it did not work. I uninstalled for the 5th time the software and did some research. This is what I believe I found but I am not sure.
If you go to the link below and read what is under Method 2 I think that explains it. My windows installer version is 3.1.4000.2435. This appears to be the reason why I cannot download the Service Pack. I surmize it is attempting to change a Windows Protected File and my Installer is doing as it is suppose to do. Here is the link:

Apparently, there is something in the Service Pack that Windows Installer is rejecting.
I am now being asked to establish a new user. What on earth would that do since I have never established a user and have administrative rights? I am hesitant to do as these tech folks want because if they mess up my computer it is pretty easy for them to say it is not our program but your computer.
I sure hope you have a backup of your encryption key.

Clean up the omnipage install, then reboot and reinstall omnipage.
That might help
How do you do that?
I did this and it did not work. My installer is version 3.1.4000.2435.
Didn't work, already did this.
If it's not for WinXP, try this:
Go to Start/All Programs/Accesories/Program Compatibility Wizard. If you have the install on a CD, select the "use program on the CD Drive" option, or navigate there manually. Follow the wizard steps for the appropriate Windows release that your CD is designed for - Win 200, 98, 95, whatever.
The installation book says it is for Windows XP and the CD date is 2005. I can install the program with no problem. I cannot get the Service Pack update that is on-line at their web-site.
You tried Googling your problem? Someone may have already had the same problem. Is OmniPage expecting an earlier or later version of MS Installer?
OmniPage is definitely on the hook with this one, IMO.
Their tech support folks will not converse with me about what they may suspect. They just email me various instructions. The two being windows install clean-up and a new user. I have done clean-up but I am not going to do a new user. I do not see the connection with the error.

No, but I will. Again, I don't know what they are expecting but I did email them the link and told them that I believed Windows was not allowing the patch download because my installer was protecting its Windows files. I asked them so now what? They did not respond to this. They just wanted me to do a new user.

Yes, it is an OmniPage problem and I do not want to mess with my configuration to "make it work" only to find out it causes a problem somewhere else. At that point they can simply tell me--call the vendor of the other issues--should there be any.
I look at techs like a plumbers and furnace men. They come into your house and cut holes and you don't know if they are affecting support walls or not. So I am wary.
I can't see what a user would have to do with an error related to Windows Installer.
I guess I don't even know how to approach the topic any further with them if they fail to address my concerns. Thanks, I will google.
Did you ask them specifically what adding a new user has to do with the problem? Have you tried running the SP install as the Administrator?
When I look at Control Panel/users it lists myself and guest. I presume my name is the Administrator. I have never created any user.
Under my name it says Computer Administrator, so I see no need to create another. I think it is just a run-a-round. I cannot find anything useful on Google but I did see some installation problems.
Take a look at your User Accounts list. Does your account's entry include "Computer Administrator" to the right of it? If it doesn't, try to make yourself an administrator by clicking your account entry and "Change my account type". Select the option for "Computer Administrator".
Give that a spin.
Is your account password protected? I know that Terminal Services won't allow your system to be accessed unless at least one account is password protected. Try adding password protection to your account. If it doesn't help, you can remove it later.
OTOH, it doesn't hurt your system to create a new user. It's no big deal. You can create it, install the software and then deleted it later.
Yes, I am the Computer Administrator. What is terminal services? and how would a password affect updating a program. No, I do not have a password. I did not want to mess with that screen on start-up.
I don't have a problem with doing this it just that I don't for one minute believe it should even be the issue. I think they are fishing, stalling, or what have you. If I can load the program o.k. then why can't I download the update. I still believe it is Windows Installer protecting my files as it should be. Did you check the link in the original message that I included? I really do thank you for hanging in there with me.
I'd really press OmniPage on this one. Talk to their manager and have them point you to an article or whitepaper explaining the nature of the problem.
