[Detroit] Lions news is bad news

...With a record of 2-11, the silver-and-Honolulu blue are firmly entrenched at No. 32 on any power poll in this spiral arm of the galaxy. Entrenched, that is, until another loss drops them behind Ohio State, Florida and the Hamburg Sea Devils. Think it can't get worse? Hey, this is the Lions. NFL schedule makers saw fit to arrange the endgame Kitty Cats' so, so long season likewise: at the Green Bay Packers where the Lions haven't won since a guy named Brett Favre took over there (that's right, 1992); against the Chicago Bears in a game which figures to see Motor City backers immortalize the chant "Fire *&#!!%&ing Millen!"; and at the Dallas Cowboys , who on New Year's Eve will probably looking to bag the No. 2 seed in the NFC... Kevin Jones, who was knocked out of the loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, figures to be out for the remainder of the season... Pro Bowl nominee Shaun Rogers... was slapped by the commissioner after testing positive for steroids. The judgment had Rogers forcibly sitting out four games and giving up $250,000. Naturally, "Big Baby" was innocent, protesting that the positive test represented a product that the 354-pound Rogers used to help him control his weight. Or he has asthma. Or he thought they were Shawne Merriman's Pez. Or something... Team officials announced yesterday that WR Mike Williams - you remember him: the former first-round draft pick cum The Most Useless Player in the NFL Today - flunked a weigh-in. At 240 pounds, Williams only missed the target set by Rod Marinelli and Co. by 20. Though no punitive measures have been mentioned, any punishment would seem pointless other then some quality time on the bench... Fire &#!!%&ing Millen.

To: SunkenCiv; All

My Sundays have been fabulous! It’s must be 20 years since I sat down and watched a Lions game. Do yourself a favor. Life is short.

Army’s Campbell drafted by Lions, not headed to Iraq
http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09000d5d80807e53&template=with-video&confirm=true

[snip] Lions coach Rod Marinelli, who served a tour in Vietnam, said on TV that picking the 6-foot-2, 229-pound Campbell was no flyer, and that the former Black Knights defensive back would be used as a linebacker, at least initially. The son of GM Matt Millen is a cadet at West Point. [end]

Perhaps Obama's next attack ad to air in Michigan can blame President Bush and the McCain-Palin ticket for the Lions' poor performance over the last seven years.

In the preseason, the Lions beat the Giants by 3, the Bengals by 17, the Browns by 20, and the Bills by 8. Atlanta beat them opening day, Detroit on the road, by 13, and Atlanta appears to be getting its clock cleaned by previously 0-1 Tampa Bay. TB's loss was to New Orleans.

The Lions Practice Squad sucked Sunday. Not the entire game, of course, just the entire first quarter, and the second quarter up until their first score, which was a field goal. They scored two more field goals, then in the second half a touchdown (+pa), then a safety, then another touchdown (+pa), and took a lead of one point (24-25). GB then had over seven minutes left, went down for a touchdown, but had to settle for a field goal, plus the lead. On the first play of the next Lions' series, Kidna threw a nice tight interception, into double coverage, a spectacular achievement.

That's when the Lions started to suck again. No, wait, you'll see.

That ridiculous turnover made me sick (actually, I was ill all weekend anyway), and I shut it off. After a while I thought, I'll turn it back on, the game must be over by now, and see what the damage was. The game wasn't over, and the score was 48- 25, meaning the Packers had scored three touchdowns and pa's in about five minutes of game clock.

I thought Bret Favre wasn't with the team anymore?!? ;')

I'm not going to watch another 14 games of such pathetic garbage. I'll check in after the games have been played to see how badly the Lions were beaten.

I don't expect them to win any games this season -- by that I mean, I don't expect them to win even ONE game -- and I'm not going to waste two or three hours every Sunday better spent on FR. ;')

The Raiders are about to fire Kiffin. On Monday of the Lions' bye week Millen may fire Rod Marinelli and hire Kiffin. Sounds stupid, right?

It would fit everything we know about Millen, except his penchant for hiring or retaining coaches whose names start with the letter M (the only exception being Gary O. Moeller, and Millen *should* have kept him). If the Lions start is 0-3 -- and seriously, who believes the Lions will beat the 49ers in SF? -- Marinelli, or someone else on the coaching staff, will be sacked. It should not be that way, because it's always worse for a team that's already spent eight or nine years in rebuilding mode to have that kind of turmoil and upheaval during the middle of the season.

Kiffin walked into a situation possibly worse than the one in Detroit, and after losing in week one to the Broncos -- a team on the way up -- the Kiffin-led Raiders whipped archrivals Kansas City. During the Lions-Packers game, actually just before, one of the announcers noted that the Packers and Chiefs were both the youngest teams in the league (that is, the players on each team were on average younger than all other teams).

Reprised and edited from message 85:

Seriously, I don't see any potential Lions victories there, but have left the scores blank, because I don't like to consider either eking out a near-win, a.k.a. a loss, or the probable blowouts we'll see on that list by season's end.

Firing coaches exacerbates the problem, because there's already chaos on the team. Get it, Ford?

Fire Millen. It's the only thing that hasn't been tried. The season's a goner, and Millen has fired coaches left and right, and hired more. At least we few remaining fans would have something to look back on fondly as we regard another wasted season of Lions football.

NFL Coaches that Will Be Fired in 2008
by Michael Luchies
September 21, 2008
Rod Marinelli- Detroit Lions
0-3 and 113 points allowed in 3 games! Losses to the Falcons and the 49ers are completely unacceptable. You know things are bad when the biggest comeback in team history (21 point defecit made up week 2 against the Packers) ends in a loss by 23 points! Even I have been in denial about the Lions inability to play football. Last week I still had hope of them making a run at the playoffs and is why I published "The Detroit Lions will make the 2008 NFL playoffs; 10 reasons why". I am not only over my ignorance, I now believe that Marinelli cannot save his job, and hopefully neither can Matt Millen. Rod Marinelli will be fired in 2008.

As the paper said yesterday, it’s the Bye week, how appropriate:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Millen

[snip] However, on September 24, 2008 Matt Millen’s tenure as team president and general manager ended. [21] Whether he was fired or resigned was not made immediately clear. However later in the day, Lions owner William Clay Ford announced that Millen had been relieved of his duties as Lions General Manager and Team President. [end]

Kitna has absolutely lost it this year. I was a supporter of his last year. But this year, he is off... he body is stiff, his throwing is completely inaccurate, his hips are stiff... Considering the Lions O line sucks, Kitna getting hurt was inevitable. He just doesn't have the mobility anymore. Nor do I believe he has the physical capabilities to help the Lions win.

The worst part is his unforgivable walk off the field, with his helmet off, while a play was still going on. Yeah, he was intercepted and while the guy was returning the interception to the end zone, Kitna turned the other way, took off his helmet, and walked off the field.

That is not a leader. I don't care how bad things get. He has lost his team too. He has a LOT to do to gain his team mates back.

I don't think he can.

As I noted somewhere, Kitna is going to take the blame, and that isn’t fair. He said he gave up, I don’t blame him one bit. It’s a risk to even accept a contract with the Lions, because anyone who does is unlikely to have much follow-on in their careers.

Wholeheartedly agree that Kitna lost whatever he had, but then, look who gets to walk funny for the rest of his life. And he hasn’t been shy in the past about public complaining directed at other Lions players.

The fact is, the O line has sucked for years. Unlike the Lions, every other team in the NFL appears to be able to give the QB enough time in the pocket and get someone open downfield. Either the coaching is lacking, or all the Lions are bottom of the barrel, or they’re all high, or, as Bobby Ross complained, they’re just playing for a paycheck and don’t give a d*mn.

Oh, no doubt the O line is horrible. They are undersized, out of shape, and lack talent. For an older and immobile QB, that is a death sentence. In fact, it is the crybaby o-line that is responsible for having Martz fired. They complained all the time about his blocking schemes. Well, we see now that it wasn't Martz- it was them. Bounce ever single one of them, except Gosder and Raiola.

As for this year, this silly 'committment to the run' crap is killing them. You don't have a tandem like Roy WIlliams and CJ and not use them. That whole run first crap is what killed them against Atlanta. The WRs were up against two of the shortest CBs in the league. And Roy and CJ are two of the tallest WRs. But no. Stick to the run. Those CBs should have been exploited over, and over, and over again. And when the WRs got double/triple coverage, run the damn ball.

There is much wrong with the Lions. And Kitna isn't the only problem. But his part of it as a whole.

This entire team/organization needs to be blown up. I would keep:

1. Roy Williams

2. Calvin Johnson

3. Kevin Smith

4. Drew Stanton

4. Ernie Sims

5. Daniel Bullocks

6. Jordan Dizon

Get rid of everyone else.
