The Hobbit Hole XXXII - Sweet is the sound of falling rain
The Freeper Hobbit Hole Blog ^ | December 1, 2006

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Okay. Miss Cat is weird!

I broke down yesterday and got some store-bought eggnog. So I have eggnog with bourbon and eggnog. When I'm finished, Miss Cat comes over and rubs against the glass like it's catnip. She doesn't lap at it, just rubs it.

She doesn't like my homemade stuff.

Huh...must have some chemical or something in it that homemade doesn't? Weird.

My cats haven't reacted like that to eggnog so far. Bleach, on the other hand...

Ungh...wind is picking up again.

Hope your flight is smooth, I guess you're probably already in the air...

Relatively quiet tonight, mostly calm, only occasional showers. +update - just heard thunder! We left the horses out. It's very changeable, and I think they're fine and safer if they aren't in the barn and under the trees. Tomorrow is a stronger storm, and I want to relax.

A rainbow from earlier :~)

According to forecasts, conditions are right we might get Aurora Borealis - Northern Lights, tonight, if we can get enough clear skies.

How would you celebrate it?

Did I mention that somehow, the guy who makes butt-art teaching at your kid's school is just so fitting?

I was searching for something else and ran across this recipe I thought you might like to try!

Canyon Ranch Eggnog; Canyon Ranch Health Resort
Replace the high-sugar, high-fat, and high-cholesterol store-bought version of holiday eggnog with this healthy and delicious version from Canyon Ranch.
1 teaspoon cornstarch
3 egg yolks
5 tablespoons sugar
2 1/2 cups reduced fat milk
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Pinch cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon rum extract
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine cornstarch, egg yolks and 2 tablespoons sugar in a medium bowl. Whisk with a wire whip until egg yolks are lemon colored. Combine milk, 3 tablespoons sugar and nutmeg in a medium sauce pan. Scald milk mixture, stirring occasionally. Slowly add hot milk to egg mixture, whisking constantly, using wire whip. Pour back into sauce pan and continue to whisk 2 to 3 minutes over medium heat or until mixture thickens. Remove from heat and transfer to an ice bath. Add cinnamon and extracts. Cool completely.
Makes 4 (3/4-cup) servings, each containing approximately: 170 calories; 24 gm. carbohydrate; 5 gm. fat; 152 mg. cholesterol; 7 gm. protein; 82 mg. sodium; Trace fiber.

I ended up with that soymilk eggnog. It's not as thick and creamy as regular, but it will do. Half the fat, half the carbs, and thecat likes it.

Hmmm....cornstarch...

Soymilk eggnog--Okie-dokie!! If'n you and thecat like it, then that's all that matters. OB drinks eggnog, he'll go through a couple of cartons this holiday season, 'cause he's got it all to himself. LSA

Dillon's didn't have any eggnog flavoring, but they had eggnog for sale.

I'll probably have a more "real" eggnog over Christmas and I won't be drinking the whole carton.

I just made some awesome Sugar Free Hazelnut Truffles! I used Sugar Free Dark Chocolate candy melting wafers. I didn't read the instructions through, and did it differently, but it still worked out. The recipe says to take a 14oz. bag of melting wafers, and chop them up into bits. Bring 1/2 cup of heavy cream up to the boiling point, but don't boil it. Remove from heat and stir in the candy melts until the mixture is glossy. At this point, I added two cups of finely chopped hazelnuts. I put the mixture in the refrigerator until it was somewhat stiff. Then I formed little balls, and dipped them in some more melted sugar free dark chocolate, then put them in the freezer for the coating to set up. WOW are they good!! I used less than two pounds of the dark chocolate and 1/2 lb. of hazelnuts, and made 5 dozen of the truffles. Sure is more economical than buying Ferrero Rocher at what, $8.00 a pound? Even though it's not the same, it has a similar flavor. YUM!

I'm going to make some more for the kids for Christmas using the regular, not sugar free, dark chocolate.
