The GOP didn't lead.

DB's right. The Republicans didn't lead. They quit acting like the Republicans we wanted them to be and started acting like "less liberal" Democrats. Combine that with the constant negative drumbeat from the traitorous mainstream media, and the stage was set.

How the hell was this allowed to happen?

After watching explosions on our televisions for 3 years, the American public thought they could "Wah, Wah, make it stop, make it stop". By electing Democrats, they may at least make the television coverage of Iraqi violence stop because NOW all the talking heads will be convinced that we've got a "new direction". ;-)

New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, ABC, NBC etc. etc.

The sheeple were convinced the economy stank, we were losing the war, Democrats are of high moral character.

I have not felt this bad since we elected a pot smoking draft dodger President.

A failure in our twelve years in the House to really lead. We let spending get even more out of control under our watch for instance. And we couldn't get much done the last few years despite holding all the levers. Equally importantly we really ran a poor campaign. In previous elections we've had a unified message. We didn't this time and not only that a lot of our candidates sniped at each other instead of concentrating fire on the Dems.

Republicans and conservatives attacked our President and Commander in Chief during war time.

That is exactly how it happened and everyone here knows it.

The GOP has been controlled by moderates and fools with socialist tendencies for some time now. 1994 is a distant faded memory, and those Contract With AMerica people are no longer effective in any way. The DC power structure has long ago neutered that voice.

We conservatives have been saying it, we've seen this day coming, but noooooo, we're just trolls. Now here we are.

I read this earlier and I truly believe it!
The MSM won this election. They have been after Bush since 2000 and they finally got their way. Of course, the Republicans and scandals have themselves to blame too!

This could have ALL been prevented, with a simple fence.

I have the answer. The Republican Party has lost it's way. Two years ago we won a historic election with morality as the top concern even when you include terrorism. We spent like drunken sailors and moved away from what made us the majority party in 1994. President Bush spent more time fighting his own base these last two years. Meirs, Shamnesty, no vetoes on ANY spending bill and on and on. PATHETIC!

Actually I think this is normal for mid term elections. It always seems that good Republican rule is followed by the folly of the Democratic party. Americans seem to have short attention spans and have forgotten the Democrat iniquities of the past. When their taxes are raised and their freedoms curtailed by the Dems we will probably see another shift to the right in '08.

It's simple. The Republicans were elected to do a job by their constituency. People want lower taxes, smaller govt, and less spending. However, a lot of elected officials get to Washington and start thinking of the next step, whether that's the Senate or the White House. They become more concerned with being Press Darlings and being viewed by the nation as 'moderate' than doing the jobs they were sent to do. It's similar to 1994 when they employed a masterstroke with the Contract With America, then abandoned its principles shortly thereafter.

It's quite simple. Bush abandoned his conservative base.

federal spending explosion, growth of government, IMMIGRATION!, Harriet Miers nomination, Religion of peace rhetoric, Fighting a war with half-measures, supporting losers like Lincoln Chafeee...

This is the Chemotherapy the GOP needs. Whether or the chemo is successful remains to be seen.

First (and only) post of the day (I'm at work):

Now, we're going to suffer. The people voted for the party endorsed by terrorists. And you all know what happens when one appeases the enemy.

The GOP did not police its list of candidates. Mark Foley should have quietly disappeared many years a go. A gay Republican??? That is like an oxymoron.

The Silent Majority saw this scandal and others like DeLay and so forth and said....enough.

We need the GOP to put forth good honest candidates.

The Republicans did not frame the issues. They were always on the defensive. The media and dems painted the republicans as they saw fit...the Republicans did not counter that effectively.

The GOP didn't lead, didn't keep to the core values and they lost because of it. What no one here seems to want to admit is that the base turned out to vote on the party line, while all those other voters who are the middle...voted their emotions.

We can be angry with them for allowing the loss or we can come to terms with the fact the congress critters didn't do the job, had lousy media relations, ran up the deficit, didn't control the budget, didn't get immigration under control, etc.

Several things come to mind, but the most telling reason is the low percentage of voters who bothered to show up at the polls. THey think they sent a message to the Republicans, but all they did was cause untold gried for the entire country for not only the next 2 years, but for the next 10 years.

Another factor is the relentless MSM message that Republicans are corrupt and that the WOT and Iraq are separate wars!
