Cosmo Kramer.

This may be the earliest live thread ever. Not that there's anything wrong with it.

Rockwell was a gift to this country.

I've heard so called art experts criticize his work but I think there is no artist that ever understood the American Spirit as well as he did.

I found that picture somewhere here, and kept it. I have it on my desktop right now. Great picture. :)

Sweet Potato Biscuits

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 teaspoons baking powder
4 tablespoons solid shortening
1 cup cooked sweet potatoes, mashed
1/2 cup milk

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Sift dry ingredients together. Cut in shortening. Add mashed potatoes. Add enough milk to make firm dough but not too stiff. Roll out on floured cutting board, then cut with biscuit cutter. Place in a greased biscuit pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until browned.

The irony in that illustration is the smile on the soldiers face while he is doing something so reviled by every soldier, peeling potatoes. I think he'd sit there and peel them all day.

Rockwell was a gift to this country.

Was he ever. You can safely ignore the so-called "art experts" - especially when you consider what sort of "art" they tend to value. There is a wealth of genuine experience conveyed in this one painting: the pride of a wife and mother, the sacrifice of a soldier, the joy of homecoming, the warmth and safety of a home, the humor and irony of finding simple pleasure in what was once a tiresome task. God Bless Norman Rockwell.
