CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Neighborhood dogs attacked goats used by the city to graze on fast-growing kudzu, killing two and critically injuring another, officials said.
"Two goats were killed, and we took one to a vet," said Teresa Grainger, director of the city's animal services. "We impounded three dogs and found the owners through a license tag."
Two nearby residents were cited for having potentially dangerous dogs. A resident reported that the dogs were attacking the goats on Tuesday afternoon.
The goats were contracted in September from Maurice Beavers of Lakesite to graze on the invasive species that is growing in the Missionary Ridge area.
Another goat in the herd previously died of natural causes.
"It's not uncommon," said Lee Norris, administrator of public works. "Anytime you deal with livestock, you expect a certain percentage of loss."
"It went so well we are looking for other areas to fence," he said. "As soon as the kudzu starts greening next year we are going to put them back."
One of the dog's owners, Judith DeWitt, said she and her husband would compensate Beavers for the dead goats.
"We don't let our dogs run loose," she said. "We had an electronic fence that went down, and my husband was fixing the fence when they got away."
Notice how the breed or type isn't mentioned.
Must've been Golden Retrievers.

Doggie Ping. Bad doggie ping.
"my husband was fixing the fence when they got away.""
Perhaps you should have kept them inside or tied up until the fence was fixed.
Some teen age boys slipped into her her pasture one night and shot several of the goats with hunting type arrows, just for the fun of it I guess. The owner ran them off with a shotgun, and she was so upset and angry they were lucky that they didn't get a load of buckshot instead of just a threat of it if they ever came back.
They really got the city's goat!
Since the goats were enjoying kudzu, I'm thinking probably Shar Pei. :D
My aunt has had goats as long as I can remember. They're really neat.
We let my dog run out in (used to be) the barnyard by herself the other year, which now is half a goat pasture. Clearly she has too much prey drive, as opposed to modified prey which would suit her being a herding dog (this is obvious by her obsession with small animals, so much she kills them by shaking). She loved chasing them down the fence lines but I wouldn't trust her right with them. (The toughest goat, a laMancha, had great fun teasing her both by reaching out at her and staring, then running off down the fence, as did the other more timid goats who followed their leader.)
Hit Dogs hired by the Kudzu Mafia...

If it would have added drama to the story, the breed name would have been in the headline.
That said, I'd love to have a couple of goats to keep down the brush, but I don't dare, because my (expletive deleted) neighbor has 2 mongrels and a dalmatian that run loose 24/7.
I guarantee goats wouldn't last 24 hours around those dogs.
Thanks for the ping HOTD
They're PREY animals, after all.
Folks ought to keep their dogs in or fenced, but accidents happen. (I have a Lab puppy who is an expert at sneaking out the door, she's only 9 weeks old but she's already got it down to a fine art.)
Sounds like these dog owners apologized, owned up to their mistake, and have offered to pay damages. That's the right thing to do, and I hope people won't beat them up over it. Unless you've got a lazy dog with a low prey drive, they will chase stuff.
Apropos of this, somebody was just telling me today at the dog show how their terrier squeezed out the car window and went after a goat who was tied up eating the grass in the front yard of a hotel . . .
(Shelley got a Q, her Excellent Jumpers title and a third place ribbon (and a cool chew toy).)
I think this is so interesting because there have been many other threads here about dogs going after livestock, and if the breed happens to be mentioned, it's always the same breed. I don't think I need to say what it is, as anyone here knows, but I think this whole idea that any dog BUT that breed can do it and have it casually explained away is hypocritical to say the least. If this had happened with "that other breed" people would be calling the owners thugs and proclaiming the dogs evil monsters.
It is too sad that only "that breed" needs to be tethered, kept inside, or fenced in, and every other dog can roam/escape/wreak havok. I personally don't think any dog should be allowed to do these things, and I think the owners should have known better than to put their dogs in a situation where they could escape. They obviously have had issue with it in the past, or else they would not have an electric fence. They were extremely irresponsible, and regardless of the breed of dog, have endangered lives by doing so.
