Notice how the breed or type isn't mentioned.

Must've been Golden Retrievers.

"my husband was fixing the fence when they got away.""

Perhaps you should have kept them inside or tied up until the fence was fixed.

That's a shame. I like goats, my mother's neighbor lady had a flock of them in her pasture and they were very interesting and amusing animals.

Some teen age boys slipped into her her pasture one night and shot several of the goats with hunting type arrows, just for the fun of it I guess. The owner ran them off with a shotgun, and she was so upset and angry they were lucky that they didn't get a load of buckshot instead of just a threat of it if they ever came back.

Unfortunately almost any dog when running in a pack will attack livestock, especially when tethered.

They're PREY animals, after all.

Folks ought to keep their dogs in or fenced, but accidents happen. (I have a Lab puppy who is an expert at sneaking out the door, she's only 9 weeks old but she's already got it down to a fine art.)

Sounds like these dog owners apologized, owned up to their mistake, and have offered to pay damages. That's the right thing to do, and I hope people won't beat them up over it. Unless you've got a lazy dog with a low prey drive, they will chase stuff.

Apropos of this, somebody was just telling me today at the dog show how their terrier squeezed out the car window and went after a goat who was tied up eating the grass in the front yard of a hotel . . .

(Shelley got a Q, her Excellent Jumpers title and a third place ribbon (and a cool chew toy).)
