'It's Here' Says Microsoft; Launches IE 7 Final, Finally
TechWeb ^ | October 18, 2006 | Gregg Keizer

Posted on 10/18/2006 9:32:00 PM PDT by Eagle9

Microsoft on Wednesday launched the first major update to Internet Explorer in five years, and posted the new browser for Windows XP to a download site.

IE 7, which has was announced in February 2005 by chairman Bill Gates, has been touted by the company as a significant update in the areas of security and usability. The interface has been streamlined and tabs have been added to compete with rivals such as Mozilla's Firefox and Opera's flagship browser. On the security front, IE 7 adds anti-phishing defenses as well as additional features to control ActiveX controls, which historically have been a pain point for Microsoft's browser.

IE 7 for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 can be downloaded from here.

"It's here, it's final, and we're excited," said Margaret Cobb, the group product manager for the browser.

The most controversial aspect of IE 7 has been Microsoft's decision to push the update to all users who have Automatic Updates enabled. Although users can reject IE 7 -- and continue using their current edition of Internet Explorer -- Microsoft will begin rolling out the browser as a "High priority" update next month. In July, when Microsoft offered up a toolkit to indefinitely postpone IE 7's installation, it justified using Automatic Updates, a mechanism for providing patches to Windows, because of the new browser's security implications.

"We've told enterprise customers to be ready [for IE 7] by Nov. 1," said Cobb. "It won't begin Nov. 1, but they should be ready."

The IE 7 update will also not add to the burden of Microsoft's monthly security patch delivery, scheduled for Nov. 14, promised Cobb. "We won't do it on Patch Tuesday."

Microsoft will also throttle back IE 7's delivery to keep the server load under control, she added. "We're starting with English, and then moving to the localized versions as they come available. At first we'll run it very slow, to a low percentage of users." After assessing the impact, Microsoft will increase the amount of traffic from the servers. "I'll have a 10 a.m. call every day to go over the impact on support or services," said Cobb, who can then order downloads to be scaled back or increased.

It will take as long as three months to deliver IE 7 to all users worldwide. "As each localized language comes online, we'll wait a few weeks after posting it for download before delivering it through Automatic Updates."

Microsoft has made one change late in the game. After IE 7 has installed, it will tell the user which search engine is the current default -- grabbed from IE 5 or IE 6 -- and then ask if they want to make a new choice. The process is similar to, but not identical, to the choice that Windows Vista users will face when they upgrade from Windows XP.

"We added this after RC3," said Cobb. "We're letting users know what engine is the default, and asking them if they want to keep it or do they want to switch. We're also going to be supporting IE 7."

Beginning Thursday, Microsoft will open a free, toll-free support line for IE 7. The help desk will be manned Monday through Friday 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. PDT, and on weekends from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. PDT.

Internet Explorer's chief rival, Mozilla Corp.'s Firefox browser, is nearing the final release of version 2.0. Currently on Release Candidate 3 (RC3), Firefox 2.0 should make it out the door before the end of the month.

Users who want to block the download and installation of IE 7 through Automatic Updates, as well as the Windows Update and Microsoft Update sites should steer here, where they can retrieve the Internet Explorer 7 Blocker Toolkit.

You are talking about someone who's installed over 150 networks, with most in WAN environments, even configuring the Cisco routers and setting up the DSU, etc. I know what I'm talking about.

people that are are that MAD at MS

Most of them will do what they've always done, they'll use the easiest, most compatible, and available products on the market. Which are and will remain, Apple, and of course Micrsoft, which they will use even if they dislike the company, because of the compatibility it offers. Some will use Unix or Linux at home, but with very limited compatibility and user friendliness, not many actually will, even when they claim they do.

veryone who has the default "Automatic Updates" option chosen will have IE7 forced down, overwriting IE6 next month. They aren't expecting this, as this option has only installed fixes, not new programs with different functions. You are a technical person to even care about reviewing patches. 95% of people aren't like you or me, so their systems will be hit with IE7 one morning without warning. Some website won't work for them. Some systems won't install it right and be frozen without a working browser if IE6 was their only browser.

No argument there, my only complaint has been your insistence everyone was being FORCED to accept this upgrade. I might keep using IE6 myself, I like it a lot and do have the OPTION of keeping it.

I know what I'm talking about.

Maybe, but it doesn't look like it since you've gone on for 100 posts about how everyone was being FORCED to upgrade to IE7.

Microsoft has to make some hard decisions about security, it is the number one problem for them and their customers. XP SP2 is a FORCED upgrade now I think, since they no longer support XP SP1, all in the name of security. IE7 will eventually be FORCED as well, but not yet, even though everyone will be better off once it becomes the standard. A computer professional such as yourself should be fighting to forward the battle against hackers, not complaining and trying to hold security improvements back.

The article above states that IE7 will be forced, in just that way, within one month.

From the thread's main article:

The most controversial aspect of IE 7 has been Microsoft's decision to push the update to all users who have Automatic Updates enabled. Although users can reject IE 7 -- and continue using their current edition of Internet Explorer -- Microsoft will begin rolling out the browser as a "High priority" update next month.

All those who have the reviewing options set for their updates can still refuse, but the rest will all get it crammed down their throats.

Once again, you're wrong. Support for IE6 will not be cut off like it has been for XP SP1. I will not be FORCED to upgrade, for any reason. I can continue to use IE6 for the foreseeable future, support for it is NOT being discontinued. You're just trying to somehow blame Microsoft for increasing the security of those set to receive all security updates, when that is obviously what those users wanted to begin with, anyway. They are giving these customers exactly what they asked for - increased security - as soon as it has finished testing and is available. The only problem seems to be yours.

You won't, because you have the reviewing option enabled, but 90% of Windows users don't.

Of course IE6 will still be supported. That's not the issue.

The issue is that 90% of the people who have Windows will be surprised to find that a new browser will have taken over the one they had. And this new one has problems, as others have noted. They can't refuse that which they don't know about.

90% is a ridiculously high claim, since not one person in this thread expects it to happen to them. Those that will get it automaticaly installed, already selected a previous OPTION to receive the latest security anyway. A more likely estimate is about 20% who may be disapointed with the new, more secure browser that was installed without them even having to worry about it.

I agree that those who will get it have selected an option that allows Microsoft to automatically install some things.

This thread self-selected technical people about a technical subject in a venue that requires some technical background to post.

If you note, a network administrator invited us to a Windows Update party as he applies the fixes to his otherwise "automatic" patch environment.

There are many, many more computers that 20% of Windows users that have this selected. I would imagine that most don't know what has been selected on their systems or think that any talk of IE7 will mean another optional program requiring a manual visit to Microsoft.com to get, just like with Windows Defender, etc.

People are not expecting a complete program to self-install on their systems, so they won't complain until after its occurred.

This is not unlike what the DUmmies will do when, after their expectations of victory from a series of (what we know to be skewed) polls leave them in defeat. Their expectations are set and they will be surprised.

Microsoft's changing of their policy, for the first time allowing a program to be forced down just like a standard security patch, will create a large number of surprised people.

That has been my only concern from my first post, onward. It will make a lot of people mad at Microsoft who have been okay with them to date. Including me, as I'm going to have to charge a bunch of people to fix the damage for those who have it.

I clearly said ~20% of customers might be upset for having gotten the upgrade, not that only 20% would receive it. Face it, you're now down to arguing about which fraction of a fraction might even care. The bottom line remains - while it is a mostly good upgrade that definitely increases security, no one is being FORCED to accept it without previously having made a decision to accept security updates.

And no this is nothing new, they've done the same thing with other security upgrades before. If better security doesn't matter to you, then turn off the auto updates, geez it's really not very hard, for anyone. Acting like you're concerned for users and not just trying to bash Microsoft isn't working.

Why would you think I'm someone who bashes Microsoft? I recommend it over Apple all the time. Linux isn't useful for most users in a home environment.

I've never in my life "bashed" Microsoft. Had an issue or two, yes. Especially after a Microsoft Money problem left my accounting totally locked out. But eventually an upgrade I helped beta fixed it.

I have no idea where you are getting your perspective.

Why would you think I'm someone who bashes Microsoft?

Because that is all you have done for 100+ posts now? And I'm not defending Microsoft, because they often deserve criticism, I simply said no one is being FORCED to upgrade.

I strongly suggest you keep that in mind before making any other absurd statements or questioning the expertise of those of us with actual real world experience in this field.

Do you lease out your field for hunting? I have a few friends that enjoy quail hunting. We make Dick wear 8,000 inches of fluorescent orange and work the dogs. We custom load all of his shells with pecan hulls, and he has actually hit more birds than with that Bismuth crap. That way we can all pound brews and nobody worries. Speaking of absurd, we will not pay any more than $1,500 a gun for the lease.

Thanks, and we look forward to hearing from you.
