NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Amazon.com has dropped Google as its search provider in favor of Microsoft, an important victory for the Seattle software maker as its battle with the 400-pound gorilla of search heats up, according to a report Tuesday.
Searches on Amazon.com are now powered by Windows Live Search, Microsoft's new search engine that's still in the testing phase, the Washington Post said Tuesday.
The news is significant for Microsoft (Research) because moves by Amazon (Research), one of the world's largest Web-based retailers, are closely watched by other Internet shopping sites, according to the article.
The battle between Microsoft, the world's largest software company, and Google (Research), the world's largest Internet search provider, is intensifying as Microsoft tries to muscle more Internet market share from the search industry leaders, Google and Yahoo! (Research).
Microsoft recently said it was plowing money into research and development, and Chairman Bill Gates was quoted in a report describing the relationship between his firm and Google as "hypercompetition."

Hmmm I wonder if Microsoft Press will be selling through Amazon at a reduced rate now
Yeah right.
I doubt that switch to micro$oft search engine will be in the cards anytime soon for me....
I wonder what the terms of the deal were. Gates is waging an "arms race" against Google according to today's article in the NYTimes.
Still in the testing phase and Amazon is already using it? Oh... I forgot all Microsoft products are in the testing phase until they hit version 3.
Wondered what the problem was. The Amazon site gave error messages and took forever yesterday.

I believe Amazon discounts mosts books and publishers, and, IIRC, they've been discounting Microsoft Press books, just like other publishers for some time. Some examples of current discounts:

I wonder if they were twisted arms or broken arms.
I have not bought an MS Press book for a while. I got a discount for Safari books through MSDN a while back. Not sure it is really a "good deal" but I can write it off and I like that it is online. Problem is when you look at books that have a CD with them and the publisher doesn't provide a download off of their site.
This is an important development in the Search Enginge wars.
Seems a great move ... for BN.com lol
400-pound gorilla loses to 800-pound gorilla...
I'll check it out - thanks!
It is interesting that google has a bigger market cap value than microsoft. Doesn't make sense. Shorting google anytime it's over $440 is probably very smart and if you can hold the short position for another 12 months it should pay off handsomely.
So I could not find any of the information there but you can go to http://msdn.safaribooksonline.com/ and check them out there. If you are an ACM member they too have access to MS Press books but it is through Books24x7. I haven't tried them yet but if they are better than Safari I will probably switch.
Sure doesn't. MSFT market cap is more than twice (2x) GOOG, according to Morningstar.com.
My bad. But it still doesn't add up.
