I've been using Avast since early this year. It has caught virus that tried to sneak through.

You should do what my neighbors do....

Call me and ask me to stop by and fix their computer!

AVG is good but I like something more comprehensive like ZoneAlarm Suite. It's kept the number of calls from the neighbors to a minimum!

I'm sorry, but I can't respond to your post. Apparently you have a virus, and it wouldn't be prudent to respond.

Here's a post of mine from yesterday. This can get you started in the right direction:

I use Grisoft AVG for anti virus, Blue Coat K9 Web Protection for internet filtering, and Microsoft Defender for anti spyware, adware, etc.

Didn't pay dime for any of them and they work great. For firewall protection, I rely on the standard Windows XP firewall along with my broadband router's firewall. I travel a lot and have to get on hotel networks and such, so I'm looking at using either Kerio Firewall or Checkpoint Zone Alarm for better protection when I'm on the road.

I've had to remove a lot of the commercial security suites from my own computers and those of my relatives who rely on me for computer support because they mess of the systems and make them operate very slowly. I just bought two notebook computers and had to remove the default installed commercial apps because they slowed things down too much. Same goes for a notebook my father-in-law purchased. He had one of the security suites and it basically rendered his notebook unusable.

The commercial security apps are expensive, require annual subscriptions but bog down your system while not offering hardly any better protection than the free stuff.

If you're really paranoid and don't ever want to get infected again via the Internet, download and install VMWare Player and then the Ubuntu-based browser appliance to run within it.

If you have XP, you have Windows Firewall. However, you need to assure it is turned on.

Also, make sure you are able to get to Windows Update. Some spyware stops that from successfully coming up.

Under "Tools" here in your Internet Explorer window, select "Windows Update". Make sure you have all the critical and hardware updates already downloaded.

Give that a try.

I wasn't too fond of Zone Alarm. It didn't install correctly the first time, and seemed to be a little buggy.

Sygate personal firewall (free version) worked well, even from behing the firewall at work (I think a Trend Micro product.

LOL!

Definitely ditch Norton. Peter Norton was wonderful in the world of the 8086, 8088, 80286 and DOS. Whoever took over the business in the 90's turned it into a garbage generator.

Yep. They've all got their idiosyncrasies but I like the Zone Suite because it has sufficient tools to cover all the bases for a novice and doesn't get in the way like Norton and McAfee do.

For me the proof is in the pudding. The only neighbor that still calls, and I was just there yesterday, is still using Norton against my wishes!

The problem I have with recommending subscription security software is that no one I know ever pays for the updates.

Every one I know that has had a problem has been a year or two behind in updates.

Free AVG and free ZoneAlarm and Windows Defender may not be the ultimate, but they stay up-to-date. I've used them on many machines for a couple of years now, with no problems.

Try downloading AVG free and see what it finds.

It's a pretty good program.

Yes, but your virus problem would be over.

Try avast - it's the best I've found...

I use avast! Free Home Edition and really like it. It updated to a new version today. A couple of weeks ago it detected something suspicious about a favicon and snared it before it could download.

What is that thing at vmware? They didn't call it anything except an "appliance". What sort of "appliance" is it.

To me an appliance is either like a washer etc.

Or
tooth braces

or
What some people use as an euphemism for sex toys.

I have never heard of a computer "appliance."
