Yes, you are correct. Norton is a virus.

You'll have to include much more detail if you want some real help though.

Norton has it's positives I suppose but it's not the AV package I recommend.

Did you update Norton? You might check out one of those free virus scan places also.

Point your browser to housecall.trendmicro.com and run their web-based scan. Use it to remove the virus.

Next, download AVG Free at free.grisoft.com, remove Norton (it's terrible), and then install AVG.

If Norton is up-to-date and running, how did you get the virus? More to the point, what did you do to acquire it?

I had to dump Norton, it screwed up two computers. I use McAfee now.

But it still acts as if there is a virus.

What is it doing? Have you checked your computer for spyware?

you'll have to look up the virus and change the infected keys in your registry.

Another vote for AVG free.
All the usual spyware/malware stuff like Ad-aware and Spybot search and destroy....should be run as well.
Good luck!

At risk of being cast into outer darkness, I'll also reccomend Windows Defender, which is in beta two and free to download from the windows update site. Because it's a Windows product it can download and replace files that have been corrupted beyond repair on the fly.

You likely have spyware, which Norton doesn't address well at all.

Download Spyware Doctor or Spy Sweeper and let it scan your system. It won't fix what it finds, but it will tell you how bad you are infected. You have to purchase them to remove spyware, but either is worth it.

If you can't afford either of them, free downloads I would recommend are Lavasoft AdAware, Windows Defender Beta 2, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, and Prevx. These are all free, but even together they are not as thorough as the two I mention above, as they don't get the new rootkits well. Speaking of rootkits, download Blacklight from F-Secure to get those for free.

And I would get rid of Norton in favor of the less buggy free anti-virus out there. Avast and AVG are both free, and Computer Associates has a small, 1 year free antivirus called eTrust you can get by going to the Microsoft web site, typing "Microsoft Windows Security Center Antivirus Partners" in the search area and selecting the top option.

Again, it's worth buying a solid antispyware program, but there are adequate antivirus programs for free that don't have the bugs of Norton.
