LEWISTON, Maine -- After one of the warmest winters on record, this coming winter will be much colder than normal from coast to coast, according to the latest edition of the venerable Farmers' Almanac.
The nearly 190-year-old almanac, which says its forecasts are accurate 80 percent to 85 percent of the time, correctly predicted a "polar coaster" of dramatic swings for last winter, editor Peter Geiger said. For example, New York City collected 40 inches of snow even though it was one of the warmest winters in the city's history.

We've had an unusually cold August here in Colorado, according to tonight's newscast.
Bush's Fault!
A Polar Coaster... LOLOL
(Gotta love that global warming ;)
Drat, I was booking a vacation to sunny Greenland.
Talk about awsome weather this summer! I spent the last couple of weeks travelling through the rockies and the weather was fantastic. Although the area has been quite dry for some time and definitely deserves a good snow-in.
Damn global warming, when will it ever end? Shut up algore!
Love the Farmers Almanac! Thanks for posting this!
I've done a little work with a farmer's almanac, Blum's. That formula that they use, supposedly Chaldean I believe, is based upon essentially a cycle, something like 19 years. It seems reasonably accurate in broadstroke. I know my grandparents wouldn't plant or harvest without consulting it, and they did pretty well.
I bought a snowblower last year and I've been running the thing all summer to keep the carburetor from gumming up.
I filled the gas tank and didn't use half of it.
Well, I wish they'd let us know where it'll be a warmer than average witner so's I could go there. I just don't see that the winter will be that much colder than average for the whole country. When the jet stream dips down far enough to give the southeast a good cold snap, it's heading up north somewhere else to bring in warmer than average air. Jet stream troughs just aren't big enough to cover the whole country and they aren't that long lasting.
An inconvenient truth?
Only if AL Bore stays out of the country & keeps his hot air elsewhere!
I hope he freezes his bum off this winter.
Anyone know the track record for the almanac?
According to the article:
"The nearly 190-year-old almanac, which says its forecasts are accurate 80 percent to 85 percent of the time.."
[singing] "polar coaster, of cold, say what..."
Third frost this month today. The Canada geese are getting antsy; they are fueled up and ready to head out.
