New York Area Is a Magnet for Graduates
The New York Times ^ | 8/16/06 | an educated man

These days, it seems, you need a college degree just to live in or around New York City.

Almost 5 million people over the age of 25 in the New York metropolitan area — more than a third of the region’s population — had at least a bachelor’s degree in 2005, according to the latest data from the Census Bureau. In Manhattan, nearly three out of five residents were college graduates and one out of four had advanced degrees, forming one of the highest concentrations of highly educated people in any American city.

The degree-holders are rapidly displacing the dropouts, a trend that may help reduce the demand for social services and drive down crime rates. But the trend also worries some sociologists who say it is evidence that lower-income residents are being pushed out.

Between 2000 and 2005, the number of people in the metropolitan area over 25 who had not finished high school declined by 520,000, a drop of almost 20 percent. During the same period, the number of college graduates in the region rose by almost 700,000.

No, it's a "we should waste our time on utterly frivolous matters like improving the Democrats' opinions of red states, instead of working on the fall elections" post.

From someone who was concerned enough about it to sign right up tonight and tell us.

New York is where dumb young people go to find out you can make 6 figures and still live near the poverty line.

Flying In NY

"C'mon, Mark, what the hell are we doing?" I looked over the edge, feeling a little
sick. Thirteen stories of Riverside drive apartments, topped by a twenty foot wall
around the water tank.

All of those old New York buildings have water tanks on top – the city water pipes
are so unreliable, each building has to have it's own supply, in case of fire.

"We are going for a run," Mark said, "and then we will climb down." I thought, is he
nuts? This damn wall is all of ten inches wide.

"I can see Grant's Tomb from up here," I said. We had my birthday party in the park
next to it. I was eight at the time. Some people created about an acre of paper mache
sculptures around the benches. But Mark knew that – he was there, of course.

The sun was shining – it had rained earlier, so the smog was washed out of the air. I
always loved the rain, because I could breathe when the air got washed. This day was
glorious, and the sun framed Mark as he stood on that wall, 15 floors over Riverside
Drive.

"Are you ready?," he asked.

Too many intentional errors and clunky wordings in that first sentence (who in the world would say "advanced education degrees"?).

an educated man = a liberal who's a little less clever than he thinks he is

Y'aint foolin us.

NYC requires highly specialized skill sets to make a living. Those without those skill sets get pretty thoroughly washed out.

A waiter can make $60,000 or $80,000 a year and go to night school.

It's easier to progress up the corporate ladder since more competition in businesses provides more opportunity.

NYC provide access to international markets and businesses. An architect in NYC is more likely to leave his job and go to work for a French or Italian firm than a U.S. firm in Topeka.

Nobody cares what side of the tracks you're from -- they only care if you're able to do the job.

No, you don't.

But you DO have to be wealthy to be able to enjoy it.

The people aren't rude and there have been many polls that prove it.

But, old friend, if you want to see a RUDE person, go look into the nearest mirror. You have been VERY rude and combative on this thread.

I don't know if it was you or someone else, but that spurious story has been posted to FR several times before. It is not only badly written, but the author has NO idea what he's talking about. Water tanks are NOT because water pipes are "bad" in N.Y.C. at all. Neither do they contain water for emergencies. And NOBODY uses then to put fires out.

And N.Y.C. doesn't have smog.
