AP Published: March 21, 1985 "Starting June 1, the nation's military bases will have to comply with the drinking age laws of the states in which they are situated. " http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9900E4D71638F932A15750C0A963948260

"However, in the 1980s, anti-alcohol groups such as such as MADD (Mothers Against Drunken Drivers) lobbied Congress to prevent this. “Federal law (United States Code) requires military installation commanders to adopt the same drinking age as the state in which the military base is located. The only exception to this rule is if the base is located within 50 miles of Canada or Mexico, or a state with a lower drinking age, the installation commander may adopt the lower drinking age for military personnel on base.” http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/InTheNews/UnderageDrinking/1106156025.html

Ahh lol you are so good at it.. go ahead and insult and run, I will be on later when your meds wear off.

ANd yes I do know tons about my Army..many of my best friends are still in, I have seen some buried and my brother is Army SF...and thats not including my dad who is ex-navy UDT and numerous other relatives who have served..and of course me which I already explained to you earlier, but in case you missed it I spent 14 years in the Army, on track for retirement at a nice rank until I found out knees arent supposed to bend forward and shins and hips arent that flexible either..I spent my first years in a training unit at Ft Sill where I trained them in Field Artillery Survey..and have dealt with and seen alot of these changes you whine about.

"the changes in training standards have hurt the discipline of the force. if they can't take being yelled at, they can't take being shot at."

You're a troll. Our ground force kill ratio has never been higher, despite having to make absurd PC concessions in the maze-laden urban environments of Iraq's city-states.

Therefore, I zot you.

The fact is the federal government has forced the states to raise the drinking age to 21. The military didn't do that and can't do anything about it.

I was 18 years old and stationed in Germany in the mid 80's. The drinking age in the States did not apply to us. Even today, unless a Soldier/Sailor/Airman/Marine shows up on base drunk I can't see how they can do anything to them if they are drinking off base in a country which has a different drinking age. Luckily for me, when my tour was over and I was reassigned to a base here stateside I didn't have too long to wait until I was legal here. Until then, the club on base was pretty lenient and tended to look the other way.

First thread, and over 150 posts. I'm impressed!

FWIW, the lack of capitalization didn't bother me -- in fact, I hadn't noticed it till others pointed it out.

OTOH, I do agree that the thread belonged elsewhere than breaking news.

welcome to fr ...

Let me get this straight. You capitalized AF, but don't believe in capitalization. Shouldn't that have been 'af'?

Anyone wanting to send care packages to our candy ass military (specifically either Bagram, Afghanistan, for the firebases, or to Stryker Brigade Combat Team now at Baghdad, or to soldiers at Camp Ramadi), here's the continuing troop support thread where we do our part to relieve stress.

Care Packages for our Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, 2006

Donations via Palpal or checks or gift cards (Amazon, Walmart, Target) also happily accepted.

P.S. I thought the toilet seats were expensive because that's where they hid the funding for the secret missions...am I wrong?

Of course, there's been no mention of the women serving on ships coming back from a cruise pregnant. God Forbid that they actually address a REAL problem.

Well, in the Air Force we don't have a lot of ships, so it wasn't much of a problem. 8D (ducking) ...

Certainly the problems created by increasing the number of women in the military were widely discussed, Biker. But with congress putting intense pressure on all four services to expand the roles and numbers of women, it was inevitable that there'd be some accommodation. Yes, one could take a stand and lose one's career, but most dedicated military members don't want to pay that price.

See post 181. I believe overseas posts can follow the local regs, which are usually much more lenient than in the U.S.

I've known Marines dealt with very harshly for underage drinking in Hawaii and on Okinawa. Like I said, it makes no sense to me, but then the whole idea that 18 is the age of majority in the U.S., including voting, making binding contracts, and joining the military, but 21 is the drinking age makes no sense to me either.

BTW, the beer in Germany is the best, ain't it?
