EXCLUSIVE: Mel Gibson Was 'Really On The Verge Of Suicide'
LA Weekly ^ | July 31, 2006 | Nikki Finke

Posted on 07/31/2006 11:13:59 PM PDT by claudiustg

I'm told by a source intimate with his situation tonight that Mel Gibson "was really on the verge of suicide because he felt he was helpless to alcohol and didn't know what to do about it. That's why he was driving around 90 miles an hour. This was a death wish. If that cop hadn't stopped him, this guy was going to be wrapped around a pole. This is such a bigger issue than 'Will he work again?' This is about his not wanting to live anymore. I've seen what he's gone through and what he's going through. You have to understand the disease of alcoholism. He was back in it. There's no doubt in my mind he was trying to kill himself that night." As for his anti-Semitic slurs during his DUI arrest, I'm told that Gibson doesn't remember saying them. "Why? He had alcoholic blackout syndrome. I don't know a lot about it. I've not had a lot of experience with it. He has some recollection of parts of the eveenings. But he's not denying he said those things, and if anything he's owning up to it. But nobody could verify it. Not even he or his lawyers have seen the police report yet." The insider called Gibson's situation "tragic. It's not about what people are focusing on, understand that. 'This is Mel Gibson. He can do whatever he wants. He has all money in world. He has a wonderful family. He has a wonderful wife.' They're not thinking about the real issue here: alcoholism. Nobody is talking about his alcoholism."

His comments were not something I want to be associated with. Mel Gibson was beaten in his younger days so bad that his face was hideously disfigured. He was a solitary person until a plastic surgeon operated on him and he turned his life around. If his father was a person who denied the holocaust, then his father probably disfigured his inner self as much as those who beat him disfigured his face. There are no plastic surgeons for the brain. He has always appeared obsessed to me. His movie the Passion was brilliant.

The physical disfigurement story is an urban legend. I'm afraid that he can't use that as an excuse.

You are right that an alcoholic would find a way to drink.

But there are scores of alcoholics who find other things to do instead of drinking, one day at a time.

Mel needs to find aa and a sponsor like... oh I don't know... Judge Dredd comes to mind ;)

Good luck, Mel. Stay out of trouble.

Just wondering where Mel's wife is right now. Is she is Calif? Also, how old are all the kids?

Alcoholics are self-centered, egotistical maniacs. Only while sobering up, would an alcoholic talk of suicide, and that's only because of the embarrassment and guilt they feel from their actions and the pity they now seek. Don't worry, because it will never happen, especially to perple who constantly seek approval and love from others (as in Hollywood stars). It's only a temporary thing, until the next drink. He drinks because ... HE WANTS TO!

So if you're going to off yourself, why put other people at risk?

Alcoholics have to stay away from the bottle. Otherwise they either drink themselves to death or end their lives behind the wheel. Either way, its not a pretty outcome.

It was sheer luck it was in the early AM when the streets were deserted. Any other time of day, it would have been a horrific crash. The worst thing about his behavior is not his anti-semitism, even though that's appalling all by itself; no - the worst thing was his total disregard for the lives of others. I don't have explain the physics of a 90 mile per hour car crash. And I don't want to think about the sight of the accident scene.

You don't need to. We know from personal experience. We had a family member killed in a high speed MVA. By someone else who was doing 90.

I don't understand the constant media attention on Mel. The Hollyweirdos say and do outrageous things everyday and nary a blip on the news. Mel Gibson does something outrageous and the media just goes nuts.

I had to snicker over that. POINT TWELVE PERCENT????? If he's an alcoholic, chances are .12 wouldn't even make him walk funny or feel dizzy. Just a buzz.

My husband's a friend of Bill too. (he feels this way too)

Yep, his "urge for suicide" sounds more like a attempt at vehicular murder. Sorry, Mel, no way out of this one but the truth. You're a Jew-hating drunk. Forget your career, which was becoming one of Bush-bashing anyway. Get help.

Maybe hes not an alcoholic. Maybe he just tied one on. I've done that before many moons ago in my youth. Well, maybe not so many moons ago. Doesn't mean I am an alcoholic. I just liked to get @#%$ faced every now and then.

I seem to remember a guy who was semi-famous who said "A man is not condemned by what goes into his mouth, but by every word that comes out" I forget who it was...

I believe that would be Jesus Christ who said that.

Oh puleeeeeeeze. This man has so much to be depressed about. What a self-absorbed creep.

I suppose I'd be suicidal, too, if I had this much hate and was living a double life. He should go join up with Hezbollah and get in touch with his inner bigot.

He was supposedly on the verge of suicide before the succes of the first Lethal Weapon movie also...

He should have gotten on with it and spared us all. The idea that he is now hiding behind his alcoholism and emotional issues is revolting. I dont think anti-semitism is listed in the DSM, anyway, so he can forget going down that road. What a wimp. I thought only liberals check themselves into day care, I mean re-hab, when they make career-ending mistakes.

Boo hoo, Mel. You had nothing to be depressed about you overblown, self indulgent, multi-millionaire....Now you do.

As my husband-who is a recovering alcoholic-would say, "That's easy for you to say. Walk a mile in an alcoholic's shoes, and then try to repeat yourself and mean it."

Why is it that most of the alcoholics I know are some of the biggest liars, especially after hitting the sauce?

Perhaps because they were pathological liars without drinking, and after drinking, they became "bigger liars". Which supports my truth serum theory.

It is highly unlikely Gibson would go from being a movie star on the top of his game to the depths of depravity ... all in two days, or whatever it was.

Especially given the resources he has, both financially and emotionally.

I am personally familiar with addiction, and this scenario just doesn't make sense. Every addict I've know gives off some kind of indication or clue that he is using again.

Mel is probably one of the most watched persons in the world, and I cannot believe no one saw one single clue that he had picked up again.

That's why I am having a hard time believing this scenario that Mel suddenly hit bottom and wants to commit suicide.

A friend of mine once recounted his entire experience training with PBY seaplanes in WWII. Only he wasn't born until the early 1960s. That experience was entirely his fathers and one I have no doubt he heard from his dad. I've seen other people talking about relatives who do not exist.
But I don't understand. We've been assured by our own FR experts that alcohol is a truth serum. The scientific support for this is in vino veritas. You must be a Mel apologist. /sarc
