Rare Lincoln Letter Found in Allentown

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - July 19, 2006 - A University of Illinois researcher had discovered a fourth copy of a rare letter Abraham Lincoln had written by to the nation's governors in 1861.

The letter John Lupton found Tuesday in the Lehigh County Historical Society's holdings was one Lincoln wrote as part of an unsuccessful ratification process for a constitutional amendment Congress adopted during the term of his predecessor, President James Buchanan, that would have made slavery the law of the land.

The president remembered for abolishing slavery had been willing to push the amendment as "kind of a carrot to the Southern states" if that would preserve the union, said Lupton, associate director of the Papers of Abraham Lincoln Project of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.

"But even by that point, it was too late. By that time, the Southern states felt Lincoln's election was an affront," Lupton said. In fact, the letter discovered in Allentown was addressed to "His Excellency the Governor of the State of Florida," which had seceded from the union two months earlier.

Until Tuesday, only three of the letters were known to have survived. "It's a very cool document," Lupton said.

Joseph Garrera, the historical society director, said he will consult with the society's board to determine the best way to display the document and try to figure out exactly who donated the letter.

By The way I've seen your picture, I have a link to it and I could post it at any time I wanted to, The difference is the burden of proof is not on me but you. If you want to prove I was never a Marine first you'll have to post your picture, then I'll do the same.

I guarentee all of my pictures will be of me in uniform and on active duty, and not at a political function after I got out of the Marine Corps.

This is me at my desk as an Aircraft Maintenance Controller for HML/A-367 in Okinawa in 1985.

The piece of green paper I am writing on is a VIDS/MAF form, a five part/page document used at that time to track all work performed on Marine Corps Aircraft.

Each page had a different function, one page was used to track parts ordered, One page went into the aircraft gripe book until the problem was repaired at which time it was replaced by the copy that The aircraft maintenance Controller (yours truly) used to track the work and the parts replaced to repair the aircraft, one copy was used by the shop performing the repairs to track the work being done the parts being order and the repair itself, and one copy went to maintenance admin to log the repairs in the computerized records of all repairs, labor and parts for each aircraft.

Each page was a different color as well, the top page was green this page went to the shop doing the repairs along with the back white page which would later go to Maintenance admin to be logged in when the gripe was repaired, The bright yellow page went to Maintenance control along with the pink page which was inserted into the gripe book to ashow that a repair had not yet been completed the pale yellow page went to Aviation supply when parts was ordered.

In the back round above my head is the VIDS/MAF display board I used to track all work being performed on all aircraft assigned to HML/A-367.

Directly in front of me is an embarkation box with the aircraft gripe books detailing what was wrong with each aircraft and what repairs had been made to each aircraft between the last ten flights.It was in these gripe book that I signed the authorization sheet certifying that an aircraft had been inspected prior to flight, preflighted by a crew chief or a plane captain, and fueled and configured for it's mission on the flight schedule.

Once again STAND you have made the mistake of believing that you know me by what I haven't said about myself. The last time you did so you assumed that I had never been to New Orleans and had never worked at The Confederate Museum and knew nothing about it, then I proved that you didn't even know that the largest free standing monument to General Lee was right outside the very front door of the museum and you didn't even know it was there.

But all around good natured sport and nice guy that I am, I'd like give you the chance to redeem yourself one last time, I'll post a picture of me in a confederate uniform if you do, with one slight caveat, you'll have to wait until I recieve the pic from my father.

Then we can compare which of us wore a confederate uniform first. anyone care to bet which one of us that will be?

While I tend to agree that a Presidential inaugural ball is an appropriate event for military personnel to attend in dress blues, the current AR670 requires retired officers wear the appropriate shoulder sleeve insignia on their left sleeve.

Failure to wear the authorized shoulder sleeve insignia today could be construed as a violation of AR670.

You mean to tell me that they actually have a special patch that says in effect "don't salute me, I'm just a retired guy running around in an Army uniform pretending I'm still on active duty"?

Wouldn't it be easier to say when you're dead we'll bury you in your uniform for the rest of eternity, but you can't wear it one second before that time once you get out.

You've read STAND's posts for years, even cataloged a mini autobiography of his claims,

Does the face match his writing style?

Is this the face of a full blooded native American of Cherokee decent?

or is this the picture of someone willing to be anything and say anything to get unearned respect?

From the short time I've bumped heads with him, he has been an overbearing oaf who demands all sorts ridiculous forms of respect, for example you cannot capitalize "STAND WATIE" since for some unknown reason never proved by STAND himself, it is disrespectful to capitalize any part of a Cherokee's name.

In all other matters STAND mysteriously has some aspect of his life that makes him an instant and irrefutable expert on everything from EOD to law enforcement to air conditioning, and yet he can barely use the Internet and depends on others to post pictures and links for him. And while he harps on me for not posting links to my opinions, he hasn't posted a single link in any of his last one hundred to two hundred posts or more.

And his behavior: charming one second then borderline psychotic the next, all the while saying he would willingly abandon and disown the country that granted him the authority of an Officer and a gentlemen in our armed forces, and he would break the very oath he swore to uphold with his life for the sake of a failed rebellion that disintegrated and the dead democrats that spawned it over a hundred and fourty years ago.

Can you imagine attending a Republican political function and standing next to STAND while he went on a little tirade about Lincoln and how the southern democrats was right. Why just saying "Lincoln was right" in front of him would be like whispering "nixon's the one" to Hunter S. Thompson and waiting for the drug ladened hormones to kick into hyperdrive.
