I watched most of Superman yesterday. In a day when CGI-driven action sequences are so easy to make, I still thought the first action sequence was excellent. (If you've seen it, I'm referring to the one with the space shuttle and the airplane.) Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane was almost too beautiful and sweet. And the movie had a great way of letting the audience be surprised at Superman's powers, despite all the previous TV shows and movies. Unfortunately, I didn't see the end, because a storm with 60-80 mph winds tore through the neighborhood about 2/3rds of the way through, so I don't know for sure that this atrocity went uncorrected:
Superman now stands for "truth, justice, and all that." They couldn't say, "And the American way." And Hollywood states it like some kind of horribly baseless accusation when they say we question their patriotism!
What are you talking about?
Maybe he should also be potrayed as memeber of 700 club.
Unbelieveable what connections people try to make.
Bingo. It saves them from having to overdo the edits and overdubbing when the film is exported.
The studio garners a great deal of money from overseas viewers.
Ok, how did you get those lines into your reply?
Eight or more * creates a line. Just found that out myself.
Oh, no! It's ever worse... he's an...
ANCHOR BABY!!!
That's just one of those alternate reality stories. They've done a zillion of them, Superman raised by the Wayne family after the death of their son Bruce, Superman ship lands in Russia, Clark Kent: the new Green Lantern etc. etc.
Kingdom Come was pretty good.
The omission of "American Way" is no minor slip-up - it was quite intentional, as the writers have a problem with America. The following is from http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1659181/posts :
Screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris have revealed why Superman is no longer fighting for the "American way" in their new movie.
Superman's motto has been to preserve "truth, justice and the American way" ever since he first appeared in Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel's comic book back in 1938.
But the "American way" part has been removed from the new movie 'Superman Returns' because the screenwriters wanted to move the character away from US patriotism.
Instead, Superman - played by Brandon Routh - vows to fight for "truth, justice and all that stuff" in the film and Harris insists it was part of an attempt to make Superman more of an international icon.
"The world has changed. The world is a different place," Harris said.
"The truth is he's an alien. He was sent from another planet. He has landed on the planet Earth, and he is here for everybody. He's an international superhero."
Dougherty added: "We were always hesitant to include the term 'American way' because the meaning of that today is somewhat uncertain.
"The ideal hasn't changed. I think when people say 'American way,' they're actually talking about what the 'American way' meant back in the '40s and '50s, which was something more noble and idealistic."
There you go - the maggot Hollywood anti-America crowd strike again!
This might.
They should have started from scratch. Batman Begins wasn't tied to the Burton Batman movie, and that wasn't tied to the Adam West Batman. Since the 80's movies came out, the comics have wiped the slate clean and revamped the story in much improved way. Now we have a movie seriously out of sync with current continuity, and continuing what was IMHO a blunder of Superman II, namely having them sleep together like that.
Superman's true souce of power comes from holding himself to a higher moral code than others. That is how he inspires, and how he avoids using his powers for selfish gain, and where he finds the strength to defeat opponents greater than himself. Too bad the writers don't realize that.
yeah, but it's just a movie
Why don't we just tell them "Yes, we'd all like to go back to the way things were during the 1930's and 40's. We can start by repealing the Voter's Rights Act, EPA, OSHA, the gasoline tax, abolishing the Dept. of Education, and bringing the hangman's noose back."
Solaris, Meatballs, Nacho Libre - they're just movies. Superman? That isn't just a movie, it's core Americana, man. It isn't just "Superman", it's , baby!
What would you say if, since Charles Schultz has now passed on, the owners of Peanuts decided to revive the cartoon, but make Charlie Brown gay? Make Snoopy rabid? Show Schroeder as a goth, or wearing a stupid DEVO hat on his head all the time? Linus portrayed by Pee Wee Herman?
If it wasn't near-and-dear to the hearts of Americans, then little kids wouldn't still be dressing up in Superman costumes every Haloween. "Kryptonite" would be just another material, never mentioned. Chris Reeve would be shown as the guy he was, eager to eat babies to make up for his horseriding mistake. And people wouldn't be making any Superman movies, that's for sure.
This is just another way Liberals try to affect our culture. It is most unwise to ignore it, or support it.
I was going to post the thought but dithered.
He came here as a very small child and was taken in by a loving American family that lived in Smallville. Later as an adult he as Calrk Kent moved to Metropolis.
It will take a better historian than me to assert absolutely that he was not in fact legally adopted while very very young and there by made an American citizen.
It isn't just "Superman", it's , baby!
I never knew bands like the Beatles, Stones, or Who to lose out on potential audience because they were part of the BRITISH INVASION.
In fact, bands like the Sir Douglas Quintet pretended to be British.
If the rest of the world would not go see a Superman film because of the line "he stands for truth, justice, and the American way" then maybe Americans are right to be wary of foreigners. We've offered aid to countless countries, given our lives to countless wars when other nations' butts were in the fire. If they hate us so, then screw them. They can have Asterix and Tintin. I'll keep John Wayne, Superman, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mouse.
You are right.
I couldn't find a comic book example (but it was depicted).
From Wikipedia, there is this summary:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman
"The Kents, passing motorists who witness the landing, take the infant to an orphanage and soon return to adopt the child, naming him "Clark"."
I didn't like it...but that scene was just a small moment comparatively speaking. Overall, the movie was excellent.
Wow... thanks for the tag and even more, thanks for the reference page.
