I have been here since 1998 and lurking since 97.(mlmr) there has been a change and I recently asked and was told off line that things here have changed it wasnt that my perceptions were skewed. I miss the free for all atmosphere. FR used to make me laugh and partipate. I now just lurk or make weird one line comments. Rarely post anymore.

I agree that there was an excess of zeal on "catching" duplicate posts, and that probably discouraged some folks. But another problem, which isn't the fault of FR, is that more and more publications or news sources prohibit the reproduction of their content. Not only that, but even posting a few lines with a reference to the on-line site doesn't work, because half the time when you get to their site, you have to be a registered or sometimes even paying user to read the rest of the article.
I also think that there was a lot of real nastiness a couple of months ago, when every single post, no matter the topic, was somehow turned into an immigration thread. Regardless of one's stand on the issue, it was extremely frustrating to see thread after thread get hijacked. It seems to me as if the mods have gotten it under control now, so maybe posting will pick up again, although there is still the problem of not being permitted to reproduce the content of an increasing number of sources.

although there is still the problem of not being permitted to reproduce the content of an increasing number of sources. One way to address that is to cite the subject of the article (not quoting, but commenting on the content) and providing a link to the source for others who are interested to reference. If you are not allowed to post a link, then just cite the source and inform others where they might find the article in question.

Eaten away by the cancer to Liberty which has as its symptoms the CFR Laws and the Washington Post and LA Times case versus Free Republic. The Liberty Tree was cut down, uprooted and the ground salted. Sorry.
Welcome to 2006.
We are a great nation -- but an Iraqi has more liberties than we.

And as you can tell by all the mindless knee-jerk, mastrubatory pre-ejective "zot" posts that have responded to your fair question -- we are overrun by the cockroaches of the internet. Or at least, too many posters posting to show off cockroach-size brains.

around here it sometimes seems the only way of disagreeing is by being disagreeable.
Not that I'm ever that way. :)

For years, after midnight sharp, I could always count on Kattracks and John Huang to post lots of articles with news that was hot off the wire.
Sadly, I don't see these guys (gals) doing this any more. Getting the latest news before it broke on TV the next morning was better than my midnight snack of cookies and milk.

The best headlines, remember, are those where FR is first with the story and way ahead of the MSM. Now, go feed your cat.

Yup. It used to be a discussion forum but unfortunately the level of discourse has come down to "don't post to me anymore troll" and "viking kitties". It's more or less an echo chamber for a handful of posters now.
