Support will end on 11 July, the next date for Microsoft's monthly security patches and software updates.
Security updates will also end, a posting on the Microsoft Security Response Center said.

Roughly 25% of PCs out there are still running either Win98 or WinME today. It should be quite interesting to see what happens the next time a major league Windows vulnerability is discovered and MS only releases a patch for XP and Vista.
UGH, I've got ME!
Does anyone here know if there is a version of XP for home networks that does not make you pay $100 per pc?

"To cut off the Microsoft bashing... Win98 is over 8 years old. WinME (which was never any good anyway, and probably why Win98 wasn't EOL'd before) is over 6 years old. It's a reasonable end-of-life time for either/both."
Oh, I still have a bit of bashing in me. I have ME on an old laptop, ME sucks, and so does MS support for it. The company hasn't supported ME worth a dang since it was replaced. So what difference does it make that they cut it off now? Who'll notice?
Great tune. Ever hear the Al Green version? Much better than the Talking Heads arrangemaent.
Reading in recent trade magazines that Vista will barely run, if at all, on current machines running XP. Maybe it is time for Linux.
Do as I do. Build him a computer. Take it over there. Tell him politely and respectfully to STFU, and them straight out STFU when he doesnt. Say, "There ya go, Dad, learn it... it will exercise your mind." Install a Linux server (Clark Connect or a similar flavor that can be easily adminned via HTTPS and SCP) on the old machine to give him more storage, map his drives on the new machine to the Linux box, then run like the wind, keep the phone disconnected for a month, then call him and ask how he's doing. By then, he'll have figured most of it out and what he hasn't, you can use remote control to show him. You'll be amazed at how much his self-esteem will increase. He'll also forgive and actually thank you for it. LOL
A friend of mine keeps the paper clip around as a pet...strange person...
I've got an older system I use for writing when I don't dare get on the net (too distracting.) It's got ME, which is a piece of excrement and one reason I am running an XP system. I've been playing round with the idea of Linux on it but have resisted dropping into that techie well yet.
Shoot, in my closet, I've got an 8088 (with MSDos 3.2, I believe), a 286, a 386, a Pentium 1 system set up with 95. My house is a history of the PC....
My gripe is that with these systems, every small processor machine you have that ran on them is now useless. Even if they just work as a browser platform they can no longer be redone with their original disks and upgraded to the latest version from support. There are no small operating systems small enough to make them usable with the tools they came with when purchased.
I have W/98 and XP. I hate Ford Escorts but on the other hand I understand a good product. I would put a 78 Chevy K-5 Blazer up against any SUV being made by Ford, GMC, Chrysler, or Toyota, in performance. In a bad snow storm give me the 78 K-5 automatic full time 4WD. Every SUV made since has been a down grade. GMC could produce them now and make a killing if not for the EPA :>{
I hate AOL but like XP better than W/98 SE for reliability and think Winders should apologize for releasing M.E. Yes I have old VHS's also family movies are on them and some favorite movies that the so called newer technology makes cost prohibitive to convert.
.
A virus that affected ME would have to make it work better. There's no way it could be any more screwed up.
