What is so secret about Indiana?
Google Earth | 5/28/2006 | Swordmaker

Posted on 05/29/2006 3:46:30 PM PDT by Swordmaker

What is it with Indiana? Isn't Indiana as American as Apple Pie??? What have they got to hide? Are they ashamed of their state?

Why is Indiana photographed at a far lower resolution than all of the rest of the United States???

Take a look at these screen grabs of Google Earth showing Indiana...

We can zoom into to Area 51 and look at it as if we were flying over it at 1000 feet... but try Indiana... the best resulution makes us feel as if we were flying over it at 5000 feet! What are they hiding? Is there a law that states: "Thou shalt not satellite photograph Indiana at high resolution."?

My parents were born in the toe of Indiana... and when we went to visit, we became convinced that Southern Indiana was in a 50 year time warp... and that you couldn't get there from here... no matter where "here" is. Could it be that light itself is slower coming off of Indiana? Does it take longer so the exposure appears to be farther away??? What gives?

Is this the ultimate flyover country?

Is it because Eerie, Indiana, is in Indiana? Who knows?

While we're at it? What's with Missouri???

For a long time there was no detail satellite imagery of most of Alaska. They were busy imaging third-world countries, and once that was done they could get around to fourth-world stuff.

Population density is probably part of the reason for the difference. If you notice in your third picture, the urban areas are imaged in higher resolution than the rural areas, same as with aerial photos.

I, too, live in a rural area, and we are lucky to get aerial flights once every ten years, whereas a nearby city has them annually.

It is apparent that IN - a good part of it - is at slightly lower resolution than some of the highly populated areas as in the post you mention. But it still has higher resolution than most areas of the USA. See cripplecreek's post at 33. I am curious why the state shows up as better-covered in general than most others. I can see my house fairly well, but not my vehicle except for a few burgundy pixels.

I'm not defending google's choices of resolution in particular places. They are in some ways trying to strike a balance in the overall US map, because all of the US probably has not been imaged in the same high resolution. (Not commercially, anyway.) To show miles and miles of Indiana farmland in the same resolution as Indianapolis or Bloomington would be a waste of resources.

Why they apparently didn't cover Evansville and South Bend in the same resolution as Terre Haute baffles me.

I suspect that Indiana had an aerial survey done at about 5000 feet (which is where the Indiana photos appear to be sharpest)... and that is what Google has licensed for its closest approach. On the other hand, some other states such as California, apparently had an aerial survey done at a about 1000 feet... and that is what Google has licensed. That would explain the distinct bordering on the state border. Missouri may have done the same.

Hubby says Indiana has higher resolution that most states. That is why it is different on that map.

I could see my Mom's house in Indianapolis in pretty good detail. Out here in the boonies, though, we could only get a map.

It's been years since I worked with planimetric maps, but I'm sure your husband is right. At first, I was thinking these images were from satellites, but some or most or all of them are aerials. Each state or even county is in charge of its particular flights. No wonder the continental US map is such a mixture.

It was kept there for a while, but the crashed UFO is now under Wright State. You know all those tunnels they built under the University. The ET research facility is right below the tunnels, and strangely looks a lot like the facility in the Half Life game. ;-P

Note To Self: Remember to pick up supplies for a new AFDB ( http://zapatopi.net/afdb/ ). Current AFDB is saturated, and need to make a new one.
