She was black, they were white, and race and sex were in the air.
But whatever actually happened that March 13 night at Duke University -- both the reported rape and its surrounding details are hotly disputed -- it appears at least that the disturbing historic script of the sexual abuse of black women was playing out inside that lacrosse party.
Two black women performed an exotic dance. The white men in their audience shouted racial epithets, one of the women has said. Things got rough. Someone in the crowd held a broomstick aloft and shouted "I'm gonna shove this up you," the other woman told police when she reported being raped. As the women fled the house, a neighbor reportedly heard one of the men shout: "Hey bitch, thank your grandpa for my nice cotton shirt."
The mainstream media have largely tiptoed around the brutal truth that has been discussed among black women in private conversations, in the blogosphere and on college campuses. It is that the Duke case is in some ways reminiscent of a black woman's vulnerability to a white man during the days of slavery, reconstruction and Jim Crow, when sex was used as a tool of racial domination.
It was the kind of predatory behavior that found its way into modern culture in the old Rolling Stones song, "Brown Sugar." And the stereotype of black women as highly sexed, like the lascivious Jezebel from slavery days. "I think there's a tendency to downgrade black women and to discount the fact that, no matter what they are there to do, they are not just animals to be used," says Dorothy Height, 94, president emeritus of the National Council of Negro Women.
"Whatever she did, she was not there as a prostitute," Height says in her defense.

Bingo! We have a winner. Black women are made to look ridiculous in those videos.
Scant mention of the woman's lies, criminal record, changing of her story, or her motivations or JUSTICE.
Side with her because she's black.
Guess the vilification of the players and the Racial hatred against them even in the presence of so much exculpatory information doesn't mean anything to the News Corpse.
Ha! Ha! I was just responding in general cause the whole thing really p----- me off. I'm tired of the whole black white thing and every time a black gets in trouble or doesn't get what they feel they should they yell racism. It just p------ me off. Sorry P-40-you were just the last one to post.
You're not from the South are you?
Ms. Duke is full of herself and ain't coming across real well when anyone who reads the FR knows the facts better than she does. Just because she is named after a decent university does not make Ms. Duke very smart, but does make me think that perhaps she is an educated fool. The facts are that no rape happened, no dna from the dukkie boys was discovered in or on her,she changed her story from day to day, she is a prostitute/exotic dancer, etc. Is this the type woman Ms. Duke thinks young black girls should look up to? It is obvious Ms. Duke looks up to this whore/dancer, so what am I to think of Ms. Duke?
Subtle and funny!
Good point. Hey, a mostly black jury let OJ skate. Surely a mostly white jury turning these boys loose won't raise an eyebrow, right?
Two sets of rules, today and a hundred years ago. The only difference is that today, it's a different group of people being oppressed, and that's just fine with the guilt-ridden Democratic party.
Hey, if I claim that I was abused by a bunch of green people, even though there's no hard evidence, can I get somebody to promise me a college education?
Seems to me the lesson here is to plan some other type of party entertainment.
If I were the president of Duck university, I would call the later of the two, and tell him that unless he can get the prosecutor under control and on a leash within two weeks, my university was going to sue his southern town into tommorrow-morrow land, and find a friendlier southern town to move to and pack up and move there, leaving the memories of Duck university operating classrooms within the city limits of Durham N.C. as material for history books.
THAT would get the idiots' attention, like right now.
I read this article this morning over my 1st cup of coffee. It's bothered me all day that, albeit in the Style Section, this kind of garbage is still being printed. I'm sure that the Post knows what has come out about this chick in the last few days and how weak her case is. It makes me ill that something like this article is still printed when they know better. Race baiting prostitutes themselves, they just keep lying. They attack Rush's ho comment and although he apologised in the same show he should actually be given credit for being right.
It's certainly not coming from whites.
Truth is, this case has smelled like old gym socks from almost the beginning. She was given only the white faces of the team members to pick from, no controls in the photo line up. There's no DNA evidence linking the team members to the alleged incident. She's made at least one bogus claim of rape before. Her story has changed multiple times. There is evidence at least one of the accused wasn't present at the time of the supposed incident based on a time-stamp ATM reciept and use of a taxi.
She just isn't credible.
This seems like a prosecution undertaken for the DA to make a name for himself because it can be shown as "proof" of the continuing white-on-black racial crime canard that race hustlers try to keep alive. This is the race card being used for political advancement.
It would be a good idea to reserve judgment on the veracity of that quote. It sounds too convenient to be true. Look up the phrase "it's Giuliani time", which was supposedly called out by one of Abner Louima's police assailants as they allegedly raped him with a toilet plunger, but which turned out instead to have been an invention of racist demagogues who stood to profit politically from damaging Giuliani's image.
Ms. Duke, when you can get the men of your own race to treat you with respect, you get back to me with that whole white-men black-women thing. Your black men can start by cleaning up rap music and taking responsibility for the children they father by marrying the mother and supporting both the mother and child.
From a ethical point of view you may be correct, from a legal one you are wrong. The law defines stripping as a legitimate profession and prostitution as a crime in every state except Nevada, where both are legal.
This article just makes me want to throw-up!
Had to get off the other thread...major troll over there...
Don't get too caught up on the facts....it's the seriousness of the charge which counts.
Understood, and believe me, I do. I only wish others would afford the same "reserve judgment" to the young woman involved.
Hopefully we will hear more about the neighbor and what he/she heard or saw.
What a pant load!
Hey, Lynne Duke! One who does eight guys in a weekend is a ho. One who does one on ones is a ho.
The LAX players were not treated as this cab driver, charged with sexual assault, (note: citizenship unknown, per his rap sheet.)
Taxi driver allowed to plead guilty only to misdemeanor

DURHAM -- As the Duke University lacrosse rape case continues to grab national attention, another sex-assault accusation with a Duke connection has quietly faded away.
It involved taxi driver Hasan Ateya Kafi, 45, who was accused last year of feloniously kidnapping a Duke student and committing misdemeanor sexual battery against her.
Court records show that Kafi was allowed to plead guilty this month to only the misdemeanor, receiving a 60-day suspended jail sentence and 18 months of probation.
The kidnapping charge was not prosecuted, and an apparently unrelated allegation that Kafi took indecent liberties with a child was dismissed, the records indicate.
Assistant District Attorney Tracey Cline, who handled the case, did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
The kidnapping and battery charges arose on the night of April 1, 2005, after a female Duke student called Durham's Best Cab Co. for a ride home, police said at the time.
A cab driven by Kafi picked up the woman near Duke's East Campus, according to Durham police.
But instead of taking the student home, Kafi drove around with her for about an hour along areas around Hillsborough Road and Broad Street, reports indicate.
Arrest warrants state that, during the ride, Kafi groped the woman and touched various parts of her body, including her buttocks, while keeping her in the car against her will. She reportedly was unable to get away or call for help on her cell phone.
Kafi was the subject of a January 2005 Duke Chronicle story that portrayed him as "a bona fide Duke pimp" due to his popularity with female students.
Defense lawyer James D. "Butch" Williams said the case was resolved under a seemingly paradoxical provision of the law that allows someone to plead guilty without actually admitting his guilt.
"Looking at the totality of the circumstances, it was in Mr. Kafi's best interests to enter this plea and move on with his life," the attorney said Tuesday. "No one did me no favors. This was a fair resolution of the case, given all the facts and circumstances."
