Gasoline prices a "crisis": U.S. Engery Secretary Bodman
Reuter ^ | May 2 06 | Reuter

U.S. Energy Secretary Sam Bodman said on Tuesday that high gasoline prices which have skyrocketed to a near record are a "crisis" for Americans.

"It is a crisis in the sense of the individual," Bodman told reporters after a meeting with Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi.

Naimi, also speaking with reporters, added that the U.S. plan to reduce dependence on foreign oil supplies through renewable energy sources was "a good thing for the world" as some oil fields, including the North Sea fields, decline.

Yes, and we have a "bird flu epidemic".

Engery Secretary Bodman

This man needs a speechwriter. He has a good speechmaking voice, but having something to say while attention is on him would be a plus.

Corrected for inflation, gasoline is not that expensive.

It sounds like he has nothing useful to say. Perhaps he should just shut up and crawl back under whatever rock he has been hiding beneath.

Yes. Put duct tape on that man's mouth so he will stop blurting out inconvenient truths.

Speaking of bird flu, that darned robin is back, right on time, nastier than ever. He is on combat patrol right now.

But, salaries haven't adjusted to inflation. So it remains very expensive.

It's still not nearly as bad as it was during the energy crisis during the '70s. Though at a progressive rate, it may be heading that way.

Gas in the US is still maybe half as much as it is in Europe. And we should feel lucky; a barrell of oil in some areas of Africa can run around 11,000 USD.

LOL! Everything is a "crisis." What a ridiculous display the congress put on today with the oil company execs. Hastert decided to lecture the Exxon representative about what to do with his profits.

Ever since the Dubai ports deal, both sides in Congress have distinguished themselves in their hysteria. Nobody leads; everybody reacts by running around as if their hair was on fire.

The one thing Congress could do--cut the gasoline tax--they absolutely refuse to do.

They could also ask whether war is the only option for getting Iran into line. But nobody is doing that, either -- and yet Bush's continuing threats to invade or bomb Iran have to be helping to drive up oil prices, since Iran is the world's 4th biggest supplier of oil.

"Sure. It's not expensive. Sure."

Relatively speaking, it's not.

In 1982 the base price of a Mustang GT was $8400. Gas was about $1.25 a gallon. Average home price was $83,900.

Now a house costs $265,000, a base Mustang GT costs about $26,000 and gas averages $2.85 a gallon.

Of those, the price of gas has risen the least.

Yeah, even percentage-wise gas has increased the least.

"and yet Bush's continuing threats to invade or bomb Iran have to be helping to drive up oil prices,"

You must have a direct line to his office because I have heard none of that. All the threats are coming from Iran.

Ever the appeaser, aren't you churchill?

What's Bush supposed to do? Kow-tow to that maniac Amadinajad so you can have cheap gas?

How would you get Iran into line? Those mullahs are spitting in the face of the UN, the Euros, and the US.

You'll have us all speaking Farsi if we let you run foreign policy.

It's all Clinton's fault. He's been the President for the last 6 years. If Clinton had spent more hands on time solving the ME probems instead of tax cuts, this could have been avoided.
