GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. (April 25) - A woman in a wheelchair who swung knives and a hammer at relatives and police died after being shocked by a stun gun, officials said.
Police tried to talk Emily Marie Delafield, 56, into dropping the weapons before they used the Taser to subdue her Monday, Police Chief Robert Musco said. Delafield lost consciousness after the electric jolt and later died at Orange Park Medical Center.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating and an autopsy will be conducted to determine a cause of death.
The two officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave during the investigation, which is standard procedure.
Tasers deliver a 50,000-volt jolt through two barbed darts that can penetrate clothing. About 7,000 of the nation's 18,000 police agencies had them last year, and they were used by police more than 70,000 times.
Amnesty International counted 61 U.S. deaths following Taser use last year. Taser International officials disputed that count, saying it linked some deaths to Taser use when there had been no such official conclusion.
Agree. They should have pepper sprayed her.
The funny thing about your first post to #2 is that he lasted about 1 hour at FR. I read his posts (about 6) and he was a rabble rouser.
Where did you get the idea that she threw knives at a cop? That isn't in the article. According to the article, she was swinging the knives, apparently in a threatening manner. Oh, while sitting in her wheelchair.
"The cops are suppose to make sure she does not harm anybody and that includes herself."
LOL Well, they werent very successful..... seeing as she died and all.

.09%, not .0009%, of dying IF you are tasered.
I'm used to Freepers who make Muslims look like choir boys. They'd kill a women who is having a mental problem in a hearbeat (even if she is wheelchair bound), apparently.
She was defective. It's fine if she is destroyed.
Real tough guys, you know.
What pre-existing condition? That they happened to be alive? LOL!
The fact that someone was in a wheelchair might, just might, get some folks to wonder if maybe they had a pre-existing condition and what's WHY they were in the wheel chair in the first place?

Hey! Look! Stephen Hawking is typing death threats on his keyboard!
HAWKING (IN COMPUTER VOICE): "Hell-0! I'm going TO BUST a CAP in YOU!"
DUMB FLORIDA COPS: "Oh lordy! TASER him!"
HAWKING: "ZZZZT! Oww-CHUCH!"
Try 0.09% chance, or nearly one chance in a thousand. You obviously took Math 101 in a public school.
The more important point is, "Is it acceptable in our society to kill one in every thousand suspects without a trial, without even an investigation?" If so, then why not simply wound them with a 9mm--one out of some number will die from the trauma--same thing.
"...I've seen people take direct shots of OC to the face with very little reaction, plus it doesn't keep someone from swinging a knife or a weapon..."
A fifty-year-old woman confined to a wheelchair is going to quickly lose the urge to fight when she gets a full whiff of pepperspray to the face. I'm the biggest law and order supporter one can find...and this badass militarization of the police must stop.
Heck, pepperspray her and then push her into the corner using the overturned kitchen table if needed. I have to think other solutions could have been explored...

Not to nitpick, but I think that would be 0.09% (.0009 = 0.09%). OK, I guess it is a nitpick.
Just out of curiosity, does it hurt less to be slashed or stabbed with a knife or hit with a hammer if the assailant is in a wheelchair?
Actually it was Math 01, they had to drop the standards for us challenged kids.

"an autopsy will be conducted to determine a cause of death".
Death by cop. I guess the young, tough cops couldn't handle an old woman in a wheelchair.
They should have called out the SWAT team. Armored car, bullet proof vests, stun grenades, tear gas, machineguns, masks over their faces...they could have handled it better.
That 50 yr old woman may have been high on drugs or alcohol, or just plain crazy, there's no way of telling how someone may react. Here's an idea i would love everybody to try. Wait until the investigation and autopsy's over before passing judgment.
