The Hobbit Hole XXIX - Until the stars are all alight...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 04/20/2006 2:10:46 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Until the stars are all alight

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I've never seen that... but it sounds like a plan... It will probably be repeat some time today.

Jessie got the VIP treatment (for his type of VIP). Got to empty a minigun from a SOF humvee. Also got to play door gunner on a UH-60. They let him shoot up the brush along a river bank.

We don't have a grill at all. Sigh. Maybe my sisters would like to go in on a charcoal one for Father's Day or somethin'.

Pretty day here, not much on the schedule. Wish we had a pool, it's hot.

Just got off the phone with mom who was busy calling all the relatives who are vets and thanking them for their service. We watched the Memorial Day service on PBS last night and my heart was full of gratitude. It remains so this morning. Many thanks to those who have served and those who gave their lives.

Get a chimney starter...

Though...I'm still not sure how those would work for something really big. Would probably at least be good for a starter bed of coals.

My Dad decided it was high time they had a grill...so he bought Margaret one for her birthday early this month. ;-)

Oh well. She was happy!

Heh...being Dad, he actually had her buy it, too. Said "You'd like a grill, wouldn't you? Go find the one you want, and I'll pay for it, within reason." And gave her the cash to buy it.

He doesn't like shopping. Heh. Guess I come by my dislike for crowded, noisy situations honestly.

We bought us a pick-em-up truck this weekend! Found one in Oakwood GA that is just terrific. It has all the bells and whistles; even a Moon Roof! It's a 2004 F250 Crew Cab Turbo Diesel 6.0 liter with only 14K miles!! We'd gone to look at some locally, but no one had any F250 Diesels. I guess they're just not as popular up in the Northeast. It might be more difficult getting them going in the cold weather, I don't know. We also wanted to check the interiors to see if the XLT would be as comfortable as the Lariat package, because there was a difference in price between the two. This one has the Lariat package, and the price was great for the low mileage. It even has one of those hard shell tonneau covers for the back, over a sprayed on bed liner. It's Dark Green with tan along the bottom by the running boards. It also has back up sensors which will be vey important. I remember how challenging it was trying to back up the Land Yacht (GMC Vandura 2500 Conversion Van), when we had it.

So we're driving down at the end of the first week in June, will pick up the truck, then get David at the Atlanta airport. SirKit will go get the cargo trailer and head home with it while David and I drive the red van (Brego) down to the coast where he'll drop me off at my sister's, the kayaks off at SirKit's brother's rectory, then drive on home to Texas in his new (old) car. He's so excited to have wheels, he doesn't even care that it's a minivan!

Range Time is always a good thing...

Just finished watering, got the soaker hose on the rose of sharons today, yesterday it was on the daylilies, the rest of the gardens got hand watered. Got another canna coming up, asiatic lilies will be blooming soon.

There were about a dozen dogs at the dogpark today, all seemed to get along pretty good. Gypsygirl is slowly becoming a bit more socialized toward them, she doesn't mind them but doesn't encourage social interaction.

He doesn't like shopping. Heh. Guess I come by my dislike for crowded, noisy situations honestly.

SirKit detests going out shopping, but will sit at the computer and shop for hours, if he's really looking for something in particular. We've gotten some good deals on stuff by his doing that. The truck we just bought is one case in point! He has found awesome stuff on ebay for fixing up the house. He even found a great deal on new furnaces, and saved enough so that we added A/C to both upstairs and downstairs furnaces for the same total amount as it would have been for someone locally to install just two furnaces.

He'll do most of the installation, and we'll have the licensed plumber come over and 'Bless' it so we can get the town's inspector to approve it. That's what we did with the new larger natural gas lines. He did all the work; the plumber just came in and did the connection to the actual gas line, then tightened everything. When the town plumbing inspector came by to check it out, he commented that the plumber had done a really good job running the lines. I just smiled and said, "That's great! I'll tell him you said that." ;o)

Homer would love a dog park, Gidget wouldn't... She's rather uninteresting in dog play. Unless it's on TV... Go figure.

Of course there are all the Biblical names and the more common names you get today. The girls' names are always stranger than the guys names, but here are some that I have in the ol' family tree:

Alden, Alon, Eulon, Elon, Isham, Melvin, Levi, Beauregard, Menoah (went by Noah), Lavender (went by Lav), Alvah, Leander, Emory, Flake, Mickleberry, oh yes and a couple of funny first and last combos like Sledge Hammer and Jack Hammer (brothers in the hill country of Texas). Forrest is another one (My dad was a Forrest Henry Jr. from Mississippi). Two good nicknames for Forrest are "Woody" and "Trees." Then Absolom, Ptolemy Philadelphius, Prentice, Lafayette, Clell, Drayton, Elmer, Elvis (my great grandfather had twin brothers named Ellis and Elvis in Mississippi), Alford, Felton, Columbus, Grover, Zebedee, Asa, Hollis, Bartholomew, Bartlet or Bartelott, Lemuel, Hilliard, Orman (I have a cousin named Orman - he goes by his middle name), Carroll, Greenberry, Anderson, Ashberry, Archibald "Archy", Ezekiel "Zeke", Charles Virgil, Farish, DeWitt Franklin, Francis Marion, Micajah, etc. My greatgrandfather's name was Osceola Johnson. He went by Oce until the 1940's when he changed is name to Otis Berry.

Anyway, you get the idea.

As for using last names as first names, it was *very* common in the South. So was having a president's name like Jefferson, Taylor, Madison, Washington, etc.

One name I found... Sherman Tecumseh (first and middle names) - NOT a southern name, but interesting nonetheless (I have no idea how this person got into my family tree. The vast majority of my family was in the TN, SC, NC, MS, and VA areas).

There's a drinking fountain for doggies, quite a line this morning. :-) It's apparent that there is a need to make the concrete pad bigger.. The parks department used plastic netting in the grass to hold the sod and seeding in place, starting to come up now and it won't be long before a dog gets tangled up in it.

Cisco would *love* a dog park.

He's very busy right now...alternating between eating breakfast and running over between bites to give me dog food kisses. He's very happy, at least. He usually is. ;-)

Cool thank you! I want to pattern a character after a fella I met once. His name was Ashley and went by "Ash". I don't want to use that name per se because the character is going to have some major character flaws that the real person doesn't. Regardless, Ash would introduce himself with his full name, his full traditional southern name of Robert Ashley Somethinorother. He'd then say, "It's a family name. Just call me Ash."
