Chihuahua pup killed by another dog at no-leash park

The no-leash dog park within Penn Valley Park, open two years, has registered its first fatality.
A 4-month-old Chihuahua was killed by another dog Friday morning, prompting heightened calls for a separate park for smaller dogs.
I was standing two feet away from him, and this dog just picked him up and crushed him, Tara Blomberg of Kansas City, Kan., said tearfully of Gizmo, her Chihuahua puppy. She said she had taken the dog to the park several times before without any trouble.
Amy Bentz, owner of the K-9 Club and a frequenter of the dog park, said several dog owners had gathered as usual about 11 a.m. to socialize while their pets romped.
Next thing I knew there was screaming and everybody rushed in, and three men were trying to pry the dogs jaws open, Bentz said. I ran for water to throw on the dog, and by the time I got back (one man) was holding the Chihuahua in his hand and its head was lolling to the side.
The pup was taken to an animal hospital but died.
The attacking dog was described as a Brittany or a golden retriever mix. The dogs owner could not be reached.
Bentz said she had applied to the city for money to create a separate no-leash area for small dogs adjacent to the existing one.
Parks and Recreation District Manager Mark Bowland said the city would like to create a separate park but had not determined the cost or identified a source of money. In the meantime, he said, a temporary orange barrier would be erected within a week to separate large and small dogs.
Bowland said that people should not take temperamental or aggressive animals to the no-leash park.
If we know and find out who such an owner is, we will make it known that is not a place for that dog to be, now or in the future, he said.
She set a Chihuahua loose in a dog park, then went off to socialize. Not terribly bright of her, 'eh?
Chihuahuas aren't dogs, they're rats that bark.
It's understandable that another dog might mistake it for a snack.
Chihuahuas taste like Taco Bell...
Oh I feel much better now.
I think that it's time for a true equality amongst dogs. All teeth and claws shall be removed and any dog that shows anti social tendencies will be put into therapy until it shows that it meets societal norms. We cannot have a just society until all dogs are equal.
Regardless of their resemblence to rats or caterpillars.
Right there in the story it says not to take chihuahuas to the park.
I've never known one that was'nt temperamental. Most are aggressive little rats as well. Neopleon complex.
Worst breed on the planet. I'd rather adopt a scarred up old pit with a fighting history then a chihuahua.
Some believe Chihuhuas to be as dangerous as Pit Bulls.
Its instinctive for dogs to attack rodents
Chihuahua's are scary little things. Sometimes my Lab will run out the front door and try to play with the two rats across the street. They're vicious little things that growl and snap at my goofy Lab. Meanwhile, he gets along great with the pit mixes our two neighbors have.
Before I moved out here in the swamp, I had 4 Beagles in an urban area. They didn't cause any problems, but if I walked them around the neighborhood, they would go full cry when they crossed the trail of any lapdog breed. I believe that the tiny breeds must smell more like a fox than a dog. You don't have to teach most Beagles about fox scent, it seems to be an inborn trait, as is running rabbits. My hounds would run either, and most of the time they seemed to know what I wanted them to run.
I don't doubt that they would have shredded any lapdog they caught.
just reminded of this time one of my father's friends who owns a ranch. well, he had a couple of chihuahas inside the gate. the ranch next door had two big huge dogs... one day the 2 mean dogs were chasing a hare through the vineyards.. the chihuahua joined the chase from the other end. chihuaha never came back... 2 mean dogs ate the "hare"....
Both dogs I've had/have are Chihuahuas. Previous dog had a sweet temperament, only time I saw her bite someone was when kids had her backed into a corner with no way out (her last resort). My new puppy is turning out to have a sweet disposition as well, very friendly to everyone. My guess is, like any other dog, their temperament will reflect their owner.
Yes, you have to be careful when they're around bigger dogs, especially hunting dogs. They think they're prey. I haven't had any problems so far with mine, usually the bigger dogs show more confusion then anything (it smells like a dog, but it's smaller then a rabbit).
This is sad to read about but I guard my Yorkie even out in our yard at night because we have huge Owls and Hawks around here. They have carried off cats and a small dog in town!!
Some believe Wristpin to be as dumb as a stump.
