FR Folding@Home Project Update - We're in the Top 150 teams Worldwide! (A Tribute to Ronald Reagan)
Stanford University Mathematics Department ^ | 03/20/2006 | Many Volunteers

Posted on 03/20/2006 8:50:19 PM PST by texas booster

OK, new thread for the next week, celebrating the first of many Million point producers – our very own Klutz_Dohanger!

First, a big shout out to the SETI and BOINC members who have added CPUs to the effort. Remember, its Team 36120, NOT Team 0.

Next, congrats to all for bumping our team up to 1011 processors and 305 user names. We have a number of new users in the team, with over 50 computers from GetLoaded.com, a trucking support website, all contributing while their owners ply our freeways keeping the nation moving.

We now have 57 members who have contributed at least 10,000 points each. Woo-Hoo!

Even more impressive, our team now boasts 225 members who have folded at least 1,000 points. That is more than the entire number of folders for our erstwhile left-wing environazi competitors!

Free Republic Folding@Home Stats Page

On the global front, Free Republic Folders is now listed at # 157. We will be in the Top 150 on Saturday!

As we continue to grow there are a number of milestones coming around the bend:

Top 150 by March 30
Top 100 by the end of the May

We have 3,350,000 points so far and have folded over 20,000 WU. We now fold over a million points per month, each and every month! Fantastic!

Thanks again to all that are helping us advance science and promote the peaceful use of computers.

"OK. Linux version is up at the Help Page"

Thanks - You and your brother are geniuses.   :^)

I've downloaded it an edited it for all the changes except the path to PHP - I can't find it on my system.   I may have to install PHP 1st, so it's going to take me some time to figure out how.    :-(

I will try to get it done by this weekend and let you know how the script works.   Thanks for all y'all have done.

Can't help you much with that, I'm afraid. I use Ubuntu here-- and I'm just a beginner. It's got two upgrade/install utilities: one (can't remember the name) for the GUI interface, which is extremely easy to use-- I just do a search on "PHP" and it brings me a list to choose from. The other (Aptitude) is the text version, which works similarly.

With both, once you find the correct package, it will make sure that it grabs any dependencies.

"I just do a search on "PHP""

ok - I did find the packages installed list and it is on the list.  However, when I search for it, all I find is  /etc/PHP4/Apache2/php.ini   (I browsed through more directories and found some stuff, but nothing that looks like a program, .exe, - what am I supposed to be looking for?  lol)

I tried pointing to that in the script line at the top & did do the chmod -a+x thing.

I don't even know how to run the script - when I click on it, it asks me what program to use to open it (no run command on the sub-menu) and I have no idea..   :-(

Not sure, in the GUI realm. In the command window mode, You can just type the name and hit enter, sort of like you'd do at a DOS prompt for a .BAT file.

I'm not going to be much help here. Need someone with a lot more Linux experience to bail us out.

I can't believe those losers were only able to keep an interest in this for just one month.

They're distracted easily by bright objects. Like when Kerry went all pumpkin colored Halloween 2004.

That happens for a couple of reasons. One reason is that even if Apache and PHP are properly configured, you still have to "open" the file from within the document directory of Apache (and through a browser - http://localhost/FaHUpload.php). Otherwise, it's just the OS trying to open a text file. The OS has no way of parsing that file.

Secondly, if you're trying to access the PHP script, and it's in the correct location for your web server (i.e., the document directory that is specified in httpd.conf), Apache still has to know about PHP extensions, and know that they're associated with the PHP installation on your computer. That way, instead of Apache filtering the text like it would with a regular HTML file, it sends it to the PHP preprocessor first. Then, any resulting HTML (probably none in this case) is sent to the browser that made the request. Here's an example of a change you might have to make to your Apache config file:

Find the httpd.conf file (maybe in /usr/local/apache/conf), and look for a line that is similar to:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php

After it's set up, you'll need to copy the FaHUpload.php file to the proper document folder. Then, try accessing it through a web browser like I indicated a few paragraphs back. I'm pretty sure you can run PHP scripts without a browser, but I'm not sure how exactly - yet.

My AMD 700 box is dead (bad motherboard, will not boot with PCI card; ex. NIC).

I replaced it with an AMD Athlon 64 2.0GHz Venice on an Asus A8V with 1GB Corsair XMS3200 TWINX.

Nice upgrade. My problem with uprading my PIII is that I don't have a legal OS to put on it. That means I have to go Linux and I'm over my head.

In any case, if I do upgrade, the word on the street (Anandtech)is this is the best value for the buck/speed trade-off.

I use Linux. I prefer Slackware and Debian-testing for everyday use. I don't know much about the easy to use distros.

My only WinXP machine is the laptop.

Those three components(CPU, MB, RAM) only cost a total of about ~$300 at http://www.mwave.com/

I received it today.
It will be awhile before it posts a completed work unit though. It's first WU is a p2107, about 3 days. It is taking 16s per frame. My P3 500MHz also has a p2107 that it has been crunching forever.

I bought some of my frankenrig from mwave. The rest from Fry's and Newegg (once you know you newegg) Can I say shopping is half the fun, or is that too much like a chick thing?
